Railways spent 45% in subsidy on passenger travel in 2023-24: Govt

New Delhi, Jul 23 (PTI) The Indian Railways provisionally spent Rs 60,466 crore in subsidy, 45 per cent of the cost of passenger travel, in the financial year 2023-24, the Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw gave the information in response to the questions raised by several MPs on the recent rail fare hike. Vaishnaw said the Indian Railways provides affordable transportation service to more than 720 crore passengers and its fares are among the lowest in the world, even when compared with neighbouring countries. 'The total amount of subsidy given in FY 2023-24 on passenger travel is provisionally estimated at Rs. 60,466 Crore. This amounts to a 45% subsidy on the cost of passenger travel," Vaishnaw informed the lower house in a written reply. He said the rail fares were 'rationalized" with effect from July 1 this year after a gap of more than five years. 'The increase in fares is very low, ranging from half paise per km to two paise per km for premium classes," he added. The minister said no fare has been increased in the second class ordinary up to 500 km, beyond that, the hike is just half paisa per passenger per kilometre. A half paisa increase has been effected in fare per passenger per kilometre in sleeper class, ordinary and first-class ordinary, 1 paisa increase per passenger per kilometre in non-AC classes in Mail Express, and 2 paisa increase per passenger per kilometre in reserved AC classes, he said. 'To maintain affordability for low and middle income families, the fares for MST (Monthly Season Ticket) and Suburban travel have not been revised," Vaishnaw informed the House, saying the hike was insignificant. 'It is estimated that less than half the trips will have a marginal increase in fare. For example, for a low-income traveller in general coach, there is no fare increase for 500 km travel," he said. Vaishnaw said the Railways has, to improve the suburban infrastructure and safety, begun work on network expansion and track upgradation, etc. 'Further, increase in frequency of train services, including suburban train services, is an on-going process over Indian railways subject to operational feasibility, traffic justification and availability of resources, etc," the minister added. The Appeal of the Classic-Looking Morgan

Chevrolet wrings a lot of mileage out of the fact that its Suburban holds the record for continuous production of any vehicle model. Ninety years is impressive for any nameplate. However, during that time, the Suburban has been produced in 12 different generations, and if it were possible to bear less than zero resemblance to something, one could say that about the current generation of Suburban in relation to the 1935 original. The two vehicles are far from twins. The Morgan Motor Company of Malvern, England, on the other hand, released its sports car, the 4/4, in 1936, a year after the Suburban, and the design has not changed that radically. The boutique manufacturer's current model, the Plus Four, still bears a resemblance to its ancestor, and in spite of any import tariff, there's a six-month waiting list to get one of these hand-built cars. And as collectibles, the cars, which start at about $85,000 new, seem to hold their value compared with some other old British brands. In two online auctions this year, for example, Morgan prices hit $55,000 (for a 2001 model with 25,000 miles) and $60,000 (for a 2005 roadster with one owner). 'Values of older Morgans have increased about 13 percent over the last 10 years' said Andrew Newton, senior auction editor for the automotive lifestyle brand Hagerty. 'Values haven't increased with the market in general, but Morgans are doing better than cars from defunct British sports car brands like Triumph and Austin-Healey.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

2025 Ford Expedition shifts into Superhost mode with trick tailgate, wide-screen display

The 2025 Ford Expedition leans into its role as the Airbnb Superhost of SUVs with a suite of features focused on family and friends. It's business in front and party in the back as the Expedition's engine and drivetrain are largely untouched while the tailgate and cargo area are primed for tailgates and picnics. A 24-inch wide-screen driver's display and available 22-speaker B&O sound system complete the big SUV's transformation from trailer-towing workhorse into king of the tailgate party. The Expedition is Ford's biggest SUV. Available with rear- or four-wheel drive and a 122.5- or 131.5-inch wheelbase, it competes with apex SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, Jeep Wagoneer, Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia. I tested a top of the line short-wheelbase King Ranch model that stickered at $83,995, excluding $2,195 destination charge. Source: Edmunds Google navigation, apps, streaming and more are standard, along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The '25 Expedition introduces a crystal-clear 24-inch display for speed, crucial driving information, weather, navigation and more. There's also a 13.2-inch touch screen for infotainment, climate and other center stack is nearly devoid of physical controls with just a rotary shifter and volume dial. Temperature, fan speed and heated and cooled seats are controlled by a row of permanent touchpoints across the bottom of the landscape-oriented touch screen. A pair of unlabeled four-axis touch pads on the steering wheel manage volume, tuning, Blue Cruise hands-free adaptive cruise control, steering wheel and pedal position, voice prompts and more. I expected the touch pads to be a usability nightmare, distracting me from the road, but they quickly became intuitive, largely thanks to icons in the display ― convenient to the driver's line of sight ― that showed what each pad was doing. It was an unexpected benefit to the wide-screen instrument display. More: I took Toyota's 2025 Land Cruiser out for a second look ― and loved it more The power tailgate opens in two pieces, a useful throwback feature Ford rediscovered this year. The lower quarter folds down like a pickup's tailgate while the top three-quarters opens upward, like other SUVs. Benefits: With the top portion open, you can easily load and remove cargo, but stray items can't roll out onto the ground. Open both portions and the bottom forms a handy seat or serving table. Ford calls the feature a Split Gate. The lower portion can support 500 pounds — plenty for a sumptuous buffet or two to three people. An adjustable trim piece provides a seat back or a shelf for food and equipment. The shelf can also be used for bilevel cargo with the tailgate closed. Two-piece power tailgate 24-inch panoramic driver's display Power adjustable center console 13.2-inch touch screen Multipurpose rear cargo space Acoustic glass The Expedition is roomy and comfortable, seating up to eight. The King Ranch I drove provides a uniquely American take on luxury and capability. Driving it is like commuting through an episode of 'Landman,' the popular program set in the high risk/high reward oil fields of west Texas. Power comes from a standard 3.5L twin-turbo V6 linked to a 10-speed automatic transmission. It's available with rear- or four-wheel drive. Acceleration is adequate, despite the 4x4 Expedition's base curb weight of 5,668 pounds. The steering capably maneuvers through suburban parking lots. The cabin is quiet at highway speed, thanks to acoustic glass The 24-inch diver's display ― a smaller version of the Lincoln Navigator's full-width display ― quickly feels natural. Ford lowered the dash and designed a squared-off ― 'squirkle' ― steering wheel to assure a clear view. The power center console slides 8 inches to the rear, creating an enclosed space for valuables when forward and putting cupholders in reach of second-row kids. The rear seat is split 40/20/20, offering either room for three or two seats with a center pass-through for long cargo extending all the way to the front seat. Chevrolet Tahoe: $58,500 Chevrolet Suburban: $61,500 Jeep Wagoneer: $59,945 Nissan Armada: $57,520 Toyota Sequoia: $62,425 Prices exclude destination charge. Source: Edmunds Ford's Blue Cruise hands-free highway driving system is improving, but trails the refinement of systems available on Chevrolet and GMC SUVs and Ram pickups. It's lane centering inspires more confidence than when the system debuted, but still lacks competitors' steadiness. Automatic lane changes for hands-free passing of slower vehicles is not available at the time of writing, but may be available soon. Only a handful of vehicles can compete with the Expedition's room and capability. The 2025 Expedition's expansive display and inventive features add to its appeal for work and play. The SUV retains its core work/play appeal with an ability to tow up to 9,600 pounds and host parties on the tailgate. Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry, episode 044: The East Coast-West Coast hip-hop war

It was just after midnight on March 9, 1997, when one of the greatest rappers of all time got ready to leave for a party in the Hollywood Hills. At 12:30 am, he left with his entourage in two green 1997 Chevrolet Suburbans headed towards Steve Stoute's house. The record company executive was hosting an after-party, and the music was so overcrowded and loud, the smoke so thick, that neighbours called the Los Angeles Fire Department. When they got to Stoute's home, they shut the party down. Meanwhile, the rapper was still on his way, travelling in the front passenger seat of one of the Suburbans alongside his associates Damon 'D-Roc' Butler, Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil' Cease, and driver Gregory 'G-Money' Young. The other vehicle was being driven by Kenny Story and carried Eugene 'Gene' Deal, Anthony 'Tone' Jacobs, Stevie J, and Bad Boy Records executive Sean Combs. The two SUVs were trailed by a Chevrolet Blazer carrying the company's director of security, Paul Offord, and driven by an off-duty Inglewood police officer named Reggie Blaylock. Tensions were high. The men in the two vehicles felt like they were in enemy territory. And they were right to be wary. Story continues below advertisement Six months earlier, another influential rapper had died in a drive-by shooting on a Las Vegas street. Many blamed the rapper currently making his way through L.A. streets this evening. The two had been embroiled in a bicoastal feud that would cost many more their lives. Many had left venues on what is known as Museum Row as the rapper's SUV stopped at a red light. Less than 50 metres away, a dark-colored mid-90s Chevrolet Impala SS drove towards the side of the rapper's Suburban. The driver of the Impala was a Black man wearing a light blue suit and bow tie. He stopped beside the car, lowered his window, drew a 9 mm pistol, and fired six shots into the Suburban. The rapper was hit four times. He was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where doctors performed an emergency thoracotomy. Their efforts were fruitless, and he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m. This time on Uncharted: Crime and Mayhem in the Music Industry, it's the story behind the death of Christopher Wallace, better known as the Notorious B.I.G., and how his death led to a 'peace' summit in what was known as the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop war. ‘What in the World Should I Do?': Woman Takes Her Chevrolet Into the Body Shop to Fix a Dent. Then She Gets It Back

A woman claims she took her Chevrolet to the body shop to fix a dent but got the SUV back in way worse condition. Stay-at-home mom Valarie Fountain ( @valarie_fountain ) recounts the incident in a viral TikTok video. 'What in the world should I do?' the mom asks in the caption of the post. Fountain starts off by showing off her Chevrolet Suburban , which she calls 'beautiful.' She then points to the area where the dent was. 'That's what we got fixed,' she says, motioning toward the area where the dent had been. However, the shop apparently did a lot more than just fix the dent in the body of her vehicle. 'Let me show you some things that I noticed yesterday,' she says. 'One, on my passenger-side door … the tint is, like, rigid,' she says, pointing to the window tint that appears wavy. She also points out a large scratch going down the tint. She then steps back to where the dent used to be. 'I know they had to do some body spray and stuff, but you can see where the spray came over on this,' she says, pointing to the rear door and its window. Opening the same rear door, she points out several scratches over the window tint, which she says were not there before. 'You can tell that they re-tinted this,' she says, pointing at a panel of the window. However, she adds, 'There's a giant gap on the side.' Finally, she opens the trunk of her car. Inside, there is white dust, water stains on the ceiling, and scratches along with water marks on the walls. She also points out several more scratches on the tint of the windows on the other side of the car. The mom is even more confused about these because, according to her, there was no reason for workers to even be on that side of the car. In a follow-up video, Fountain says that she took the car back to the dealership that worked on it and asked to speak to a supervisor. She says the manager initially tried to brush everything off. But when she insisted, they agreed to get the car detailed and to have the windows re-tinted. Thankfully, she says her insurance agreed to cover all the repairs so she would not have to pay for anything out of pocket. Many viewers were at a loss about how the shop could have done so much damage while trying to fix the dent in her car. 'It's like someone stole your car off their lot. They found it, fixed the dent, and gave it back,' said one user. 'The way my jaw dropped when I [saw] the inside,' said another. 'Nah they fixing that entirely or paying someone to fix it right,' a third wrote. Tips for Leaving Your Vehicle at the Body Shop Many viewers offered tips for how Fountain could better prepare her vehicle for repairs the next time she had to leave it at the shop. 'Before I drop my car off anywhere I take a video before to be able to show the previous condition. Never trust no one,' one person suggested. 'Next time in a shop write down your miles … Looks like they had a bunch of stuff inside your vehicle which scratched the tint,' said another. One person even suggested she check the suspension, speakers, and other parts of her car to make sure they were the original parts from the manufacturer. In addition to these steps, a California-based body shop called B&J Body Shop suggests documenting the car in its entirety, inside and out. It also advises car owners to clear out all personal items from the car, including items in the trunk and glove box. Finally, it suggests getting together the following documentation that may be required for insurance claims: Detailed pictures of the car A description of the damage and incident that caused it Any estimates that the shop may have provided beforehand Motor1 reached out to Fountain via TikTok direct message for further updates on the situation.
