12-year-old battling total kidney failure named Suffolk County sheriff for a day

A Long Island boy battling complete kidney failure became Suffolk County's top cop Tuesday. Wyatt Houppert, 12, is set to have surgery in less than a week. Doctors say it will save his life. Tuesday, he was the honorary Suffolk County Sheriff for the day. It's only the second time in the last eight years that the Suffolk County Sheriff's Department has done so. It comes with certain perks, like trying out any vehicle in the fleet, and "arresting" CBS News New York's John Dias. Houppert was born with only one kidney, and it recently began to fail. That means he needed dialysis four times a week to survive, until her could get a transplant. "it was already hard enough with the one kidney. Then now, since February, it was like getting hit by a Mack truck all of a sudden," his mother Devan said. The community rallied together and started up a GoFundMe for financial support. The boy's true hero, however, was family friend Dawn Rice, who is a perfect match for a kidney transplant. "An angel on earth. She acts like its no big deal and we are just like, are you kidding? This is amazing," Devan said. Rice said she's paying it forward. Two of her relatives needed transplants. "I know how important it is, to give a person another second chance at life," Rice said. "You don't need both kidneys. Share your spare." Rice's is the wife and sister of two correction officers with the sheriff's office. When word made its way to the department, they wanted to help Wyatt, too. "There is an additional support system that he knows that is available, to him and his family," Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. said. It's all meant to help Wyatt go from fearful to cheerful as he endures his next medical chapter. "All this positivity and love from everyone means a lot," Devan said. "We are very happy that he is able to have a second chance." Wyatt's transplant is set for Monday.

Online fundraiser for Dublin firefighter accused of rape removed

An online fundraising campaign launched by the family of Dublin firefighter Terence Crosbie, who is accused of raping an American woman in a Boston hotel room in March last year, has been shut down. The 38-year-old's court hearing last month, which ended in a mistrial, heard that the Dublin native was in the American city with work colleagues as part of the St Patrick's Day celebrations on March 14th, last year. Advertisement His trial, in which he pleaded not guilty, began in the Suffolk County Courthouse in Boston, Massachusetts on June 9th, before presiding judge Sarah Weyland Ellis. Mr Crosbie's next trial is due to take place on October 14th. After declaring the mistrial, Judge Ellis increased his bail from $10,000 to $50,000, declaring him a flight risk. It is alleged that on March 14th last year Crosbie raped the now 29-year-old woman at the Omni Parker House, a hotel in downtown Boston. Crosbie had flown to Boston from Ireland on the same day of the alleged incident with colleagues and that he was scheduled to leave the following Tuesday, March 18th. Mr Crosbie was sharing a hotel room with a fellow firefighter, whom the alleged victim said she had consensual sex with after meeting earlier in the Black Rose pub. They subsequently fell asleep in separate beds. Advertisement The victim alleged that she woke in the early hours of the following day to another man sexually assaulting her, and identifying him to police as the defendant. The fundraiser, Family, Friends & Colleagues for Terence Crosbie on claimed on Friday, that 'without immediate support,' he may lose the 'very legal team that knows his case best and has worked tirelessly to defend him. 'That would not only delay his case further, prolonging his unjust confinement, but would risk the fairness of the proceedings altogether.' The organisers outlined:'Since March 2024, Terence (Terry) Crosbie has been incarcerated in Suffolk County Jail, thousands of miles from home and separated from his beloved wife and two young daughters. Advertisement "He is facing serious legal proceedings in the United States, a foreign country where the legal system is unfamiliar and the costs are staggering.' They added that from the very beginning, Mr Crosbie has fully cooperated with law enforcement and 'steadfastly maintained his innocence.' In a statement on the fundraising site, organisers continued: 'In order to defend himself and clear his name, he and his family sought out highly respected legal counsel—attorneys who believe in him and have built a strong defense. 'Terry's legal team fought hard for him in his first trial. But despite their efforts, the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. That means a second trial is now required—and the fight continues. Advertisement 'The emotional and financial toll of defending oneself abroad is more than any one family can bear alone. Terry's loved ones have poured everything they have into supporting him, but the continuing legal costs—attorney's fees, expert witnesses, trial preparation—are simply too great.' The fundraiser reveals that the firefighter's family 'misses him so deeply'. 'Terry is a devoted husband, a loving father, and a kind and loyal friend. His wife and daughters are counting down the days until they can hold him again. Your generosity, your prayers, and your willingness to share this page with others—they all mean more than words can say.' However, the fundraiser on is no longer online and no reason has been provided for it being removed either by the campaign organisers or by the company which runs the website. More than €10,000 had been raised by donations prior to the online campaign being removed. Advertisement In the court hearing defense counsel contend that Mr Crosbie did not rape the woman and that his DNA was not found on her. The Dublin man's defense team repeatedly asked the woman about her account of events focusing on aspects of her story they claim changed at last month's trial. Crosbie has been detained at Nashua Street jail in Boston since his arrest last year.

Mass. woman shot and pistol-whipped people she didn't know during attack in Boston, DA says

A Revere woman is facing charges in connection with shooting a man, pistol-whipping two other adults and punching a 15-year-old — all of which she had no prior relationship with — during a May attack in East Boston, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced Thursday. Amaya Yarde Lydon, 21, pleaded not guilty to charges including armed assault with intent to murder, four assault and battery charges and four firearms charges in connection with the attack during her arraignment in Suffolk County Superior Court on Thursday, the district attorney's office said in a press release. Her lawyer could not be reached for comment Thursday evening. In the span of a few minutes on the night of May 10, Yarde Lydon attacked four different victims who were previously unknown to her near Maverick Square, according to prosecutors. The attacks began with a confrontation and altercation with a 15-year-old on the inbound platform of the Maverick subway station around 10:40 p.m., the district attorney's office said. During the attack, she punched and pushed the teen. Yarde Lydon then left the station, and within minutes, she pistol-whipped two other victims with a 9mm, semiautomatic handgun multiple times, the district attorney's office said. The two victims were eating dinner from a food truck near Lewis Mall when she attacked them. Yarde Lydon then noticed a bystander who was recording the attack on a cell phone and fired five shots at him, hitting him in the left arm, hip, abdomen and right buttocks, the district attorney's office said. At 10:44 p.m., she tried to flee the scene via Maverick station, but was stopped by Boston police. 'This chaotic spasm of violence left four people injured and probably many others traumatized by witnessing such terrible scenes,' Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in the release. A grand jury indicted Yarde Lydon on the charges on June 26, according to court records. A judge found her dangerous during her arraignment and ordered her held on $5,000 bail with release conditions including that she wear a GPS location-monitoring bracelet, be confined to her home, not possess any firearms, have no contact with any witnesses in the case or their families, remain alcohol and drug free, abide by her health care providers' treatment plan and continue going to therapy. Yarde Lydon is due back in court for a pretrial conference on Aug. 26. Man stole two cars, got into several hit-and-run crashes in Boston, DA says

A Boston man is facing charges after he stole two cars and got into several hit-and-run crashes across the city in January 2024, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office announced Monday. Carmen Polito, 42, is charged with several counts of leaving the scene of a car crash involving property damage, two counts of receiving a stolen motor vehicle and one count of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, the district attorney's office said in a press release. On Jan. 20, 2024, Boston police responded to a 911 call reporting that a person was trying to open car doors on Commonwealth Avenue shortly after 10:30 p.m., the district attorney's office said. Witnesses told police they saw the suspect — who was later identified as Polito — trying to open car doors while holding a knife and trying to get into a car while it was stopped at a red light. Shortly after, a 911 call reported a hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Massachusetts and Commonwealth Avenues in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, the district attorney's office said. The caller said he was parked on the street when a black Mercedes sideswiped his truck, causing minor damage. The caller reported that he then saw the Mercedes — which was later determined to have been stolen and driven by Polito — 'plow' into a Nissan Rogue, causing it to crash into another car, the district attorney's office said. Witnesses told police they saw the Mercedes reverse and drive forward multiple times while crashing into the Nissan. A third 911 call then reported a hit-and-run crash in which they were sideswiped by a Nissan SUV near the intersection of Belvidere Street and Massachusetts Avenue, the district attorney's office said. A fourth 911 call reported seeing an SUV driving in loops and crashing into vehicles on Westland Avenue. Soon after, a Massachusetts State Police trooper spotted the stolen Nissan on Frontage Road, the district attorney's office said. He pursued the SUV into Quincy where he pulled it over. Polito was soon identified as the driver, the district attorney's office said. He was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation and was admitted for 'extended treatment.' 'This hectic and dangerous incident left drivers frightened, cars damaged and the safety of motorists and pedestrians along its extended route seriously threatened,' Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in the release. 'Given all the havoc that transpired in such a short span, it's very fortunate that no one was injured.' Polito has a 13-page criminal record and has been convicted on various assault charges including assault and battery on a police officer, the district attorney's office said. In January 2023, he was sentenced to two years in prison in connection with leading police on a foot chase near Northeastern University before being subdued with a beanbag round. A judge held Polito on $2,000 during his arraignment in Roxbury District Court on Thursday, the district attorney's office said. He is set to return to court on July 17.
