ASEAN-China ties must target real outcomes, says Indonesia

JAKARTA: Indonesia has urged ASEAN and China to strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors, emphasising the need for tangible outcomes in digital economy, clean energy, food security, and infrastructure. Foreign Minister Sugiono highlighted the importance of delivering real progress in these key areas during the ASEAN Post-Ministerial Conference with China in Kuala Lumpur. Sugiono welcomed advancements in the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (FTA) 3.0, expected to be finalised this year. He described it as a crucial move towards open, rules-based trade and deeper regional integration. China remains ASEAN's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade nearing US$1 trillion in 2024. The minister also acknowledged China's proposed 'ASEAN visa' to facilitate business travel and the launch of the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council-China Summit as positive steps. However, he stressed the need for stronger collaboration in addressing regional challenges, including transnational crime, law enforcement, and maritime governance. On the South China Sea issue, Sugiono emphasised the urgency of finalising a Code of Conduct by 2026. He stated that progress must be 'meaningful and anchored in international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).' 'Only then can we achieve true win-win cooperation for a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region,' he added. – Bernama

Indonesia urges ASEAN unity to protect regional stability amid tensions

JAKARTA: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has urged ASEAN to strengthen its unity and maintain its central role in preserving regional stability amid escalating geopolitical tensions. His remarks came during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Retreat in Kuala Lumpur, where key issues such as the Myanmar crisis, South China Sea disputes, and transnational crime were discussed. 'ASEAN must reaffirm its role as the anchor of the regional order. Unity and centrality cannot be compromised,' Sugiono said in a statement from the ministry. He emphasised the need for immediate action to halt violence in Myanmar and ensure swift humanitarian aid delivery. Ministers at the retreat reiterated support for the Five-Point Consensus as a framework to resolve Myanmar's prolonged crisis. Additionally, concerns were raised over rising transnational crimes, including online scams linked to human trafficking and drug smuggling. Progress on the South China Sea Code of Conduct (COC) was welcomed, with Sugiono urging ASEAN to finalise a meaningful agreement. 'ASEAN must uphold its commitment to concluding a substantive and effective COC to ensure maritime stability,' he said. Amid global instability, Sugiono highlighted ASEAN's responsibility to safeguard citizens in conflict zones using existing emergency protocols. The retreat ended with a renewed pledge to foster regional resilience and peace. - Bernama

Indonesia urges ASEAN unity amid global challenges, investment shifts

JAKARTA: Indonesia has emphasised the need for ASEAN to bolster its strategic and economic resilience as global competition escalates and foreign investments dwindle. Speaking at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Foreign Minister Sugiono warned that the bloc's relevance hinges on its ability to act cohesively. He highlighted ASEAN's unique position amid global economic uncertainty, noting a 10 per cent rise in foreign direct investment despite worldwide declines. 'ASEAN must lead by fostering a predictable, open investment climate, as a safe harbour amid global uncertainty and a magnet for sustainable foreign direct investment (FDI),' he said. Sugiono urged ASEAN to transition from policy discussions to concrete actions, fully supporting the ASEAN Geoeconomics Task Force. He also called for the swift implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 and greater coordination among member states. Indonesia reaffirmed its backing for Timor-Leste's full ASEAN membership and proposed deeper engagement with Papua New Guinea, citing its strategic and cultural ties to the region. 'In today's uncertain geopolitical climate, it is also timely for us to broaden ASEAN's outreach, and Papua New Guinea is a natural partner,' he added. On regional stability, Sugiono supported modernising the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, including mechanisms for preventive diplomacy. 'ASEAN's credibility will be defined by the consensus of our values and the coherence of our actions,' he concluded. - Bernama

Foreign ministers arrive in KL as Malaysia hosts 58th AMM under Asean chairmanship

SEPANG, July 9 — Foreign Ministers from Asean and its dialogue and sectoral partners continued to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday ahead of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings. Indonesia's Foreign Minister, Sugiono, was among the latest Asean leaders to reach the Malaysian capital, touching down at 11.30am on Tuesday. Algeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, touched down at the Bunga Raya Complex of Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 10.30am. Norway's Deputy Foreign Minister, Andreas Motzfeldt Kravik, arrived at KLIA Terminal 1 at 3.30pm. Singapore's Foreign Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, meanwhile, arrived at 9.10pm. Malaysia is currently hosting the 58th AMM and related meetings under its 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme, 'Inclusivity and Sustainability'. A total of 24 foreign ministers-level meetings will be held, including bilateral discussions with Asean's external dialogue partners — Australia, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In addition, four trilateral meetings involving Malaysia, the Asean Secretariat, and sectoral dialogue partners — Brazil, Norway, Switzerland and Turkiye — are also scheduled. This marks the fifth time Malaysia is chairing Asean, having previously held the position in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. — Bernama

Indonesian FM to attend Asean meetings in Kuala Lumpur

JAKARTA: Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono (pic) will join his Asean counterparts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia next week for the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting and a series of related engagements from July 8 to 11. Indonesia's Foreign Ministry Director-General for Asean Cooperation, Siddharto Suryodhipuro, said Sugiono would participate in various sessions including regional dialogues and bilateral meetings with Asean's key partners. "The AMM is an opportunity for South-East Asia to address regional and global developments. Given the current dynamics in international politics, the ministers will discuss a range of issues, including those affecting South-East Asia and global situations impacting the region,' he told a press briefing here on Thursday (July 3). Siddharto said Sugiono is also scheduled to co-chair the Asean-Australia meeting alongside his Australian counterpart, as Indonesia currently serves as Asean's coordinator for relations with Australia. Malaysia currently holds the Asean chairmanship for 2025. It marks the country's fifth time at the helm of the regional grouping since its previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. Siddharto said that Sugiono is also expected to attend the Conference on Cooperation Among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development, which Malaysia is also hosting. "With Sugiono's active participation, it reflects Indonesia's continued commitment to Asean and its efforts to promote a peaceful, stable and prosperous South-East Asia in line with national interests,' he said. - Bernama
