Cooch Behar Shooting: BJP MLA Sukumar Roy's Son, Driver Arrested After Attack On TMC Neta
Last Updated: Cooch Behar (Uttar) MLA Sukumar Roy's younger son Subhankar Roy and the family's driver Uttam Gupta were arrested on Friday. A BJP MLA's son and his driver were arrested on Friday in connection with a shooting incident that injured a Trinamool Congress leader in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. The police said that Raju Dey, karmadhyaksha of the Cooch Behar Block 2 Panchayat Samity, was returning home on his motorcycle around 11 pm on Thursday when four assailants opened fire on him near Jhinaidanga. Dey sustained a gunshot wound to his right shoulder and underwent surgery early Friday at a private nursing home. He is currently stable, said officials. Cooch Behar (Uttar) MLA Sukumar Roy's younger son Subhankar Roy and the family's driver Uttam Gupta were arrested on Friday. Police also seized a black SUV believed to have been used in the attack. 'The vehicle belongs to MLA Roy. Witnesses saw his son in the car at the time of the incident," a police officer said. An FIR has been registered against four individuals. While the MLA's elder son was initially detained, he was later released. 'Hunt is on to get the other two involved in the attack," Superintendent of Police Dyutiman Bhattacharya said. In a video statement, Raju Dey alleged: 'A couple of months back, locals in Chakchaka held protests against the MLA. The legislator was travelling in the same car back then. It was seen yesterday, too, when I was attacked." The incident triggered strong political reactions, with the ruling Trinamool Congress alleging political violence in the state. 'The 2024 Lok Sabha results from Bengal made it clear that @BJP4India was rapidly losing ground in Cooch Behar. Now that the district has slipped from their iron-fisted grasp, they've returned to what they do best: unleashing BRUTE, MINDLESS VIOLENCE," the party wrote on X. Protests were also held across the district by TMC workers demanding strict action. 'This is an exceptional case where the son of a BJP MLA is trying to kill our man. We would expect the governor and the NHRC to visit Cooch Behar as they do every time BJP blames our party," said TMC district president Avijit Dey Bhowmik. MLA Sukumar Roy, meanwhile, dismissed the allegations, calling them politically motivated. 'With the assembly polls near, TMC netas have become desperate to gain ground in the district, especially in my constituency, as they know they will lose this time as well. They are therefore using cops to do what they do best," he said, claiming Dey was injured in an internal party clash.

BJP MLA's son arrested for firing on TMC worker in West Bengal's Cooch Behar
Kolkata A Trinamool Congress worker was shot at in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district and a Bhartiya Janta Party MLA's son has been arrested in relation with the crime, the police said on Friday (July 4, 2025). One more person has been arrested in relation to the crime. The son of local BJP MLA Sukumar Roy, Dipankar Roy, and his driver, Uttam Gupta, were arrested in connection with the case, according to information shared by the local police officials. Mr. Sukumar Roy is the local MLA from Cooch Behar. Police have recovered CCTV footage from the crime scene which is one of the strongest pieces of evidence in this assault case. The incident of shooting happened on July 3, late at night when the BJP MLA's son was reportedly using his father's car. BJP denies role, says it is 'internal feud' However, BJP claimed that Raju Dey, the TMC worker was attacked during an internal feud in their own party and said that Dipankar Roy or others from BJP had no relation to the crime. Mr. Dey's condition is said to be stable at the moment, and he has been admitted to a local hospital. 'BJP does not involve in such crimes and violence. I do not know who is behind this incident, but TMC is only using this to malign our name,' Sukumar Roy said. He also added that TMC does not have much footing in north Bengal and Cooch Behar that is why they are using this moment to attack BJP. He said that there are many allegations against Mr Dey and he can be attacked by anyone. In the meantime, TMC workers in Cooch Behar took out a rally in support of Mr Dey and condemned the attack. 'We outright condemn the murderous attack on Raju Dey, Public Health Officer of Cooch Behar II Panchayat Samiti. Armed BJP-backed criminals, using the car of @BJP4Bengal's own MLA, tried to kill a public representative, and BJP still dares to talk about law and order?' the TMC wrote in a statement on their official social media handle on X. 'BJP MLA Sukumar Roy, the car he uses has been recovered and seized in connection with this attack. This was beyond our imagination. He is the local MLA, miscreants are using his car to attack a TMC panchayat member, this is unthinkable,' a local TMC leader accused during the protest rally. Raju Dey spoke to media persons from his hospital bed and claimed that the BJP MLA's son attacked him. 'This is not new, the MLA and his son have attacked many of our people on other occasions as well,' Mr Dey said. He called for strict action against the perpetrators. Police said that an FIR has been filed, and investigation is underway. He suffered a bullet injury on his right shoulder, police added. The injured had to undergo surgery to recover from the bullet injury. TMC Minister Firhad Hakim accused that BJP is using 'Gujrat model' of politics in West Bengal to injure, kill, and harm their people.

TMC leader shot at, BJP MLA's son & his driver held: Police
A TRINAMOOL Congress (TMC) leader was seriously injured after he was allegedly shot at in Cooch Behar on Thursday evening, police said on Friday. The son of local BJP MLA Sukumar Roy, Dipankar Roy, and his driver, Uttam Gupta, were arrested in connection with the case, police said. Raju De, member of the TMC's Uttar Panchayat Samiti in Cooch Behar, underwent surgery and is now stable, police said citing doctors. A personal vehicle belonging to the Roys that was allegedly used in the crime was also seized by the Cooch Behar police. BJP MLA Roy, however, denied all the allegations and claimed that his son has been 'falsely framed' in this case. 'All these are baseless allegations. They (TMC) have no organisation in this constituency. They are now trying to frame BJP workers before the 2026 Assembly election,' claimed the MLA. District Superintendent of Police Dyutiman Bhattacharya said, 'Two more persons are suspected to be involved in the incident. A search is on for them. A forensic team is examining the seized vehicle.' According to the police, when Raju De was returning home from a meeting on Thursday evening, a black-coloured car approached him and the occupants opened fire. Local residents took De to a nearby nursing home, where he underwent surgery, police said. Doctors said his condition is now stable. TMC Coochbehar district president Abhijit Det Bhowmik claimed, 'A few days ago, the BJP MLA (Sukumar Roy) visited Chakchaka area to interact with the people. Some local residents, under the leadership of Raju De, staged a protest in front of him. This seems like an act of revenge.' In a post on X, the ruling TMC wrote, 'The 2024 Lok Sabha results from Bengal made it clear that @BJP4India was rapidly losing ground in Cooch Behar. Now that the district has slipped from their iron-fisted grasp, they've returned to what they do best: unleashing BRUTE, MINDLESS VIOLENCE. Our Panchayat Samiti worker from Cooch Behar II was shot in cold blood. CCTV footage confirms the involvement of @BJP4Bengal MLA Sukumar Roy's son, flanked by their usual gang of armed goons. When you can't win people's trust, can't secure a mandate, can't fight a clean election, you shoot your way through…' The BJP, however, denied all the allegations. Cooch Behar shooting: TMC leader injured in attack; BJP MLA's son arrested
NEW DELHI: A local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was shot and injured late Thursday night in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district, triggering a political row between the ruling party and the BJP. Raju Dey, the 'karmadhyaksha' of the Cooch Behar Block 2 Panchayat Samity, sustained a bullet injury to his right shoulder after unidentified men opened fire near the Jhinaidanga area around 11 pm. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by party workers and is currently stable, police said. According to investigators, the attackers arrived in a black car, which was later abandoned at the scene. 'The vehicle belongs to MLA Roy. The BJP leader's son and the driver of the car have been arrested. We have witnesses who have seen his son in the car at the time of the incident. Our investigation is continuing,' said a senior police officer. Police confirmed that an FIR has been filed against four individuals. In a video statement, Dey linked the incident to a past protest against the local BJP MLA. 'A couple of months back, locals in Chakchaka had held protests because the MLA remained inactive in the area. The legislator was travelling in the same car back then. It was seen yesterday, too, when I was attacked,' Dey said. The TMC accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack. 'The 2024 Lok Sabha results from Bengal made it clear that @BJP4India was rapidly losing ground in Cooch Behar. Now that the district has slipped from their iron-fisted grasp, they've returned to what they do best: unleashing BRUTE, MINDLESS VIOLENCE,' the party posted on X. It added, 'Our Panchayat Samiti worker from Jhinaidanga was shot in cold blood. CCTV footage confirms the involvement of @BJP4Bengal MLA Sukumar Roy's son, flanked by their usual gang of armed goons.' However, the BJP rejected the charges and pointed the finger back at the TMC. 'This is definitely a pre-planned conspiracy of the TMC. They did it along with the police,' said BJP MLA Sukumar Roy.

Witnesses reportedly saw the MLA's son inside the car during the incident. Authorities said the investigation is still underway. Following the attack, TMC took to the social media account on X, alleging that BJP was behind the attack. 'Our Panchayat Samiti worker from Jhinaidanga was shot in cold blood. CCTV footage confirms the involvement of @BJP4Bengal MLA Sukumar Roy's son, flanked by their usual gang of armed goons,' it said.
