Cops rule out loan shark involvement in Johor teacher's death

Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said Lo Kwan Fong was an only child and both her parents were deceased. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have ruled out any criminal link to illegal moneylending syndicates in the death of a female teacher whose decomposed body was found in her home in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, on June 13. According to Bernama, Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said although Lo Kwan Fong, 39, had previously borrowed RM20,000 from a loan shark, the debt had been fully settled. He said preliminary investigations also found no incidents of paint splashing or threats against the victim — tactics commonly used by loan sharks to pressure debtors into repaying their debts. 'The deceased had previously lodged a report, which was investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951. However, after clearing all her debts, there were no further police reports. 'Neighbours also confirmed that no loan sharks had come to throw paint at her house,' he was quoted as saying. Kumarasan said checks with the national registration department revealed that Lo was an only child and both her parents had died. To date, her remains have yet to be claimed by her next of kin. 'We will discuss this further with the hospital. 'After two weeks, the body will be released to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for them to appoint a private funeral service,' he said, adding that several parents of her students had expressed their willingness to assist in funeral arrangements. Kumarasan added police were informed that Lo has an aunt in Singapore, but they do not have further information about her. Lo was found dead in her home on June 13 after neighbours detected a foul smell and alerted the Nusa Bestari police station. Investigations indicated she had likely died about a month before her body was discovered. A post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist at HSA concluded that the cause of death was 'unascertained due to advanced decomposition'.

Police rule out loan shark link in Skudai teacher's death

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 25 — The death of a female teacher, Lo Kwan Fong, whose body was found at her home in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, on June 13, is believed to have no criminal elements involving illegal moneylending syndicates or loan sharks. Iskandar Puteri police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said although the 39-year-old victim had previously borrowed RM20,000 from a loan shark, she had fully settled the debt. He said preliminary police investigations also found that there were no incidents of paint splashing or threats against the victim. 'The deceased had previously lodged a police report, which was investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951. However, after clearing all her debts, there were no further police reports. 'Neighbours also confirmed that no loan sharks had come to throw paint at her house,' he told a press conference at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters today. He said the police had checked with the National Registration Department (JPN) and confirmed that she was an only child and her parents had already passed away. To date, her remains have yet to be claimed by her next of kin. 'We will discuss this further with the hospital. After two weeks, the body will be released to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for them to appoint a private funeral service. 'We were informed that she has an aunt in Singapore, but we still do not have further information about her. Several parents of her students have expressed their wish to help with the funeral,' he said. Earlier, the media reported that the teacher was found dead at home after neighbours noticed a foul smell and reported the matter to Nusa Bestari police station. Investigations revealed that the woman, who lived alone, was believed to have died about a month before her body was discovered. An autopsy conducted by a forensic pathologist at HSA revealed the cause of death as 'unascertained due to advanced decomposition'. — Bernama

Johor police seek NRD's help to trace teacher Lo Kwan Fong's next-of-kin

JOHOR BARU, June 18 — Police are seeking the assistance of the National Registration Department (NRD) to locate the next-of-kin of teacher Lo Kwan Fong, whose decomposed body was discovered at her home in Skudai last Thursday. Iskandar Puteri police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Kumarasan said efforts are underway to identify and contact any of Lo's known family members to expedite the process of claiming her remains, currently held at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA). 'So far, the victim's remains are still at HSA, and no family members have come forward to claim them. 'There was a school that approached the authorities to claim the remains, but we did not release them. Priority is given to the next-of-kin first,' he told reporters when contacted today. Updating the media, Kumarasan said Lo was found dead in her Bandar Selesa Jaya home after being reported missing for about a month by her colleagues. Preliminary investigations revealed that Lo, who lived alone, rarely interacted with her neighbours. 'The condition of the victim's house indicated that she spent much of her time at home and seldom ventured out. 'Our investigations did not uncover any signs of foul play, and there were no criminal elements related to her death,' he said. The discovery followed reports of a foul smell emanating from her house, prompting a neighbour to alert the police. A post-mortem conducted by forensic experts at HSA determined that the cause of death was unascertainable due to the advanced state of decomposition. Lo, described as an only child, was believed to have been deceased for about a month. Both her parents had passed away several years ago.

From July 1, Johor's Sultanah Aminah Hospital patients to get mobile alerts through QR codes to ease congestion

JOHOR BARU, June 17 — The Johor government has introduced the Smart Queue System (SQS), which utilises quick response (QR) codes, to facilitate patient access to specialist clinic services at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA). Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the system, the first of its kind to be implemented in a government hospital in Malaysia, was developed with a RM1 million allocation. He said the system will be rolled out in phases starting July 1. 'Previously, patients had to arrive early to get a queue number and were required to take two separate numbers -- one for the clinic and another for the pharmacy. 'With the SQS, patients only need a single queue number for both services, making the process more convenient and reducing overall waiting time,' he told a press conference after a working visit to the hospital today. Present was state Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon. Onn Hafiz said the system will also send notifications to patients' mobile phones when their turn is approaching. He added that the state government remains committed to enhancing services at HSA, including upgrading eight wards, the surau and restrooms, with the work expected to be completed by year-end. Asked about the multi-storey parking project at the hospital, he said it is currently undergoing a value assessment (VA) lab process. — Bernama
