Avril Lavigne Reunites With Deryck Whibley for ‘In Too Deep' at Warped Tour
Pop-punk icons Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley reunited onstage over the weekend for a surprise performance of Sum 41's 'In Too Deep' during Lavigne's headlining set at the Vans Warped Tour stop in Washington, D.C. Eight songs into her June 15 set, Lavigne brought out her ex-husband — and Sum 41 frontman — to deliver one of the most iconic anthems of the genre. 'What do you say we bring one of the OG Warped Tour bands back out here tonight to join me right now?' she told the crowd. 'Let's hear it for Deryck from Sum f—ing 41!' More from Billboard Rachel Zegler Serenades Crowd Outside Theater for Free in a New London Production of 'Evita' Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to Receive Vanguard Award at The Guitar Center Music Foundation Gala & Benefit Concert Shakira Announces Two More Dates in Mexico, Extending Record to 28 Whibley, who had recently announced his retirement from music following Sum 41's final album Heaven :x: Hell, responded with his signature smirk: 'Holy s—, goddamn. I thought I f—ing quit music. But how the f— can I miss the Warped Tour, right? I've come out of my three- or four-month retirement for two reasons: to be with the Warped Tour family, and to be with the one, the only, the motherf—ing princess.' The two, who were married from 2006 to 2010, launched into the 2001 hit backed by Lavigne's live band, creating one of the most buzzed-about moments of the Warped Tour's comeback weekend. After the show, Lavigne posted a carousel of photos from the set with a caption celebrating the reunion: 'This legend @deryckwhibley from @sum41 joined me for one of the best pop punk anthems of all time 'In Too Deep.'' The moment marked Whibley's first return to the stage since Sum 41's retirement announcement earlier this year. The band wrapped things up following the release of their double album Heaven :x: Hell, citing Whibley's health issues and a desire to go out on a high note. The performance also came after a turbulent year for the frontman, who filed a lawsuit against former manager Greig Nori with claims of abuse. Nori denied the allegations and countersued. Still, in D.C., none of that overshadowed the shared nostalgia onstage. Lavigne summed it up best: 'Headlined Vans Warped Tour last night and it was everything I would have expected and more!' Avril Lavigne praises ex-husband Deryck Whibley after they reunited for performance, Entertainment News
The 40-year-old singer and the Sum 41 frontman, 45, wed in 2006, but they split in 2009 and their divorce was confirmed in 2010. However, the former couple are still on good terms, and Deryck joined Avril on stage at the RFK Stadium Grounds in Washington on Sunday night (June 15) as she headlined the Vans Warped Tour. Avril and Deryck performed Sum 41's song In Too Deep together to "one of the best crowds" she has experienced. The Complicated hitmaker wrote on Instagram: "Headlined @vanswarpedtour last night and it was everything I would have expected and more! It was one of the best crowds and you guys know how to rock. "Also this legend @deryckwhibley from @sum41 joined me for one of the best pop punk anthems of all time In Too Deep" Deryck is now married to model Ariana Cooper, and Avril previously wed Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger in 2013, but they divorced in 2015. Avril and singer Mod Sun got engaged in March 2022, but the pair went their separate ways less than a year later. A month after the pair got engaged, Avril insisted relationships were "not easy", and she had learned to "prioritise" herself rather than relying on other people. Speaking to FAULT Magazine at the time, she said: "Yes, love is hard and relationships are not easy. "It's not easy for anybody and I've now lived long enough to realise that I need to prioritise myself and take care of myself. "I went through a phase where I was like 'I'm gonna be independent and have time on my own for a minute... "And it really didn't last that long! But when I started the album, I was definitely in the mindset of, 'If I'm going to rely on anyone in this world, it's going to be me.' " [[nid:719052]]

Avril Lavigne reunites with ex-husband Deryck Whibley for performance at Vans Warped Tour
Avril Lavigne recently reunited with her ex-husband Deryck Whibley during her performance at the Vans Warped Tour in Washington, DC, where the pair played a set together. The Canadian singer shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, expressing her excitement about performing with Whibley, known for his role in the band Sum 41. Lavigne, 40, and Whibley, 45, were married from 2006 to 2009, after becoming engaged in 2005. Their marriage ended when Lavigne was 24, citing the feeling that she had married too young. Despite their divorce, the two appear to remain on good terms. Whibley made a surprise appearance during Lavigne's headline set, joining her to perform the pop-punk anthem In Too Deep by Sum 41. Lavigne praised her ex-husband, calling him 'a legend' and describing the crowd's energy as one of the best she had ever experienced at the festival. Their reunion comes at a challenging time for Whibley, who has been battling serious health issues. Last year, he was hospitalised with pneumonia and Covid-19, which led to complications including heart failure. His wife, Ariana, shared the distressing news on Instagram, explaining that his heart was under significant strain due to the inflammatory condition caused by pneumonia. Fans were excited to see the ex-couple performing together, and many commented on the sweetness of their relationship and mutual respect. One fan shared their appreciation, saying, 'I love to see the respect you and Deryck have for each other!' Others were moved by their ability to remain friends despite their past, with many likening it to seeing their divorced parents getting along. Lavigne's relationship history includes a second marriage to Nickelback's Chad Kroeger in 2013, which ended in 2015, and a brief engagement to Mod Sun in 2021, which also ended in 2023. Despite the ups and downs, Lavigne and Whibley's ongoing friendship highlights their enduring bond and mutual respect.
