Students need humane touch: IIT-Kgp director
1 2 3 Kolkata: There is a need to enhance connectivity with students so that their issues and challenges are detected early and bring back the culture of fulfillness on the campus, said Suman Chakraborty, the newly appointed director of IIT Kharagpur, after taking charge on Monday. He felt that enforcement of attendance should not turn out to be a punishment. "It can be kept in a subtle way to strike a balance between too much freedom and excessive strictness," he added. According to Chakraborty, a combination of technology and human touch is essential to avoid a crisis in the long run. "A student who is distressed is supposedly using a chatbot. There are ways one can be alerted about the situation. But this student may have approached the situation in a different way if he or she lived with parents. There is a need for humane touch and this cannot be replicated through mechanised intervention. Faculty members were also told not to de-register students on attendance issues. "As a teacher, I have never given much importance to attendance. It should not be a binding force for enforced learning. But as an administrator, compulsory attendance is an extension of our Indian way of upbringing. There is nothing wrong in it. But I feel that if a student can perform well without attending classes, he should not be penalised. I am against any punitive actions because it demotivates people. On the other hand, if a student is not attending classes and is performing badly, we need to find the root cause of the problem. De-registering a student will not bring any positive outcome." He said students needed to be nurtured with legacy values and they should take part in engagement programmes, involving science and technology. "This skill and value-based learning will help them enhance professional, life skills," he said.

Award-winning prof Dr Suman Chakraborty takes over as IIT-KGP Director
Professor Suman Chakraborty, a nationally awarded scientist and eminent academic, officially took over as the Director of IIT Kharagpur on Monday. An internationally recognised expert in mechanical engineering, Prof Chakraborty has been a faculty member at the institute since 2002. Over the years, he has received several prestigious honours — both national and international — for his contributions in fluid mechanics, biomedical engineering, and their applications in technology for social impact. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University (1996), Prof Chakraborty pursued his Master's at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, where he was the faculty topper and earned a gold medal along with a Senate Commendation. He went on to complete his PhD from IISc in 2002, with his research on solid-liquid phase transitions in thermal processing earning him the institute's Best Thesis Award and the 'Best International CFD Thesis Award' in computational fluid dynamics. He began his teaching career at Jadavpur University before joining IIT-Kharagpur as an Assistant Professor. He became a Senior Professor in 2008. Prof Chakraborty has held several key administrative roles at the institute. He was Dean of Research and Development and of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (2019–2022), and Associate Dean prior to that (2017–2019). He also served as Head of the School of Medical Science and Technology (2015–2019). Among his key scientific leadership roles, he was Principal Investigator for the ICMR Centre of Excellence on Healthcare, and led the CRTDI (Common Research and Technology Development Hub) on Affordable Health, funded by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. In recognition of his research in micro- and nanoscale fluid flows, which have driven affordable diagnostics and improved access to healthcare in underserved communities, Prof Chakraborty was recently named recipient of the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by UNESCO. He currently holds the Institute Chair Professorship in Mechanical Engineering and is a Sir J.C. Bose National Fellow, a distinction conferred by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur Jadavpur University and Calcutta University are the only three institutes from Bengal that have made it to QS World Ranking 2026. While IIT-Kharagpur and JU improved their rank, CU's position saw a dip. The list this year features 54 institutes from the QS World University Rankings, published annually by the London-based global higher education analytics firm Quacquarelli Symonds, assess universities based on performance indicators, like academic reputation, faculty-student ratio, research impact, international student diversity, graduate has climbed seven spots from 222nd rank last year to 215th. It also ranked 4th among the IITs. The new IIT Kharagpur director, Suman Chakraborty, said, "We have performed better than last year but our rank can improve if we can create a positive impression on the outer world as perception plays an important role." The outgoing acting director, Amit Patra, said, "Our performance in citations per faculty, international research network and sustainability, helped us better our position."At 676, JU's rank improved significantly from last year's position between 721 and 730. "As a state-run institute, we have constraints, including funds crunch. Still, JU has been performing well. The credit goes to our teachers', researchers' and students' dedication. Improvement in areas, like faculty-student ratio, international student diversity and international student ratio, could have advanced our rank, but they do not depend entirely on the university," said an rank dropped to a place between 771 and 780 from last year's 751 to 760. CU acting VC Santa Datta said, "The rank has slightly dipped but it's a proud moment that we are still among institutes on the world ranking list. With limited resources, my aim is to develop the university holistically, focusing on research and international network."

Advt Kolkata, Suman Chakraborty , the Institute Chair Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT Kharagpur , and Sir J C Bose National Fellow of the Department of Science and Technology, has been appointed the director of IIT Kharagpur, the institute said in a statement on Friday who will take over from the current acting director professor Amit Patra, will be in office for a period of five years with effect from the date of taking charge or till attaining the age of 70 years, whichever is was recently awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by the UNESCO for his seminal work in micro and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihoods and healthcare access for the marginalised was featured in the list of top 100 researchers across all disciplines in Asia in 2023.A recipient of the National Award for Teachers 2023, a laureate of Infosys Prize-2022 and the winner of the coveted Santi Swaroop Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty has been elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ASME, Alexander von Humboldt, and all the Indian National Academies of Science and Engineering, the institute who has been appointed as a full-time director by the Centre, joined IIT Kharagpur in 2002 as an assistant professor and has been a senior professor since January 1, IIT BHU (Varanasi) director Amit Patra took over as the acting director of IIT Kharagpur, after the end of term of V K Tewari, who was the institute's director till December 31, 2024.

QS world University Rankings 2026: IIT Kharagpur ranks 4th in India, 215th globally
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has been ranked 4th in India and 215th globally in the latest QS World University Rankings 2026, the institute said in a statement on Friday. The institute jumped seven places from its position in the 2025 rankings. The QS World University Rankings 2026 evaluated 8,467 institutions worldwide and featured 1,501 universities in the final list. IIT Delhi is the best-ranked Indian institution in the rankings, climbing more than 70 places in two years to secure the 123rd spot in the coveted list. IIT Kharagpur has performed well in parameters like sustainability, employer reputation, citations per faculty and international research network, the statement noted. "This global recognition is a testament to our collective pursuit of excellence in knowledge creation, dissemination, and societal impact. We remain committed to fostering innovation and interdisciplinary learning at a global level," said Prof. Amit Patra on the latest rankings before handing over the charge to his successor, the newly appointed director Prof. Suman Chakraborty. The official handing-over of charge is scheduled to take place next week. Patra has been serving as acting director since January 1, following the completion of tenure of Director Prof. VK Tewari on December 31.
