2,285 accidents in Dubai in 2024: Police warn of rising road fatalities during summer

In 2024, Dubai recorded 2,285 traffic accidents, resulting in 34 deaths and 43 serious injuries during the summer. The rising number of traffic-related deaths over recent years has raised alarm, prompting various entities to come together to launch the 2025 edition of the 'Summer Without Accidents' campaign, urging drivers to exercise caution during the hot months. Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Operations at Dubai Police shared concerning figures for traffic accidents in Dubai during summer months (1 June to 30 September) over the past three years: In 2024: 3,481 accidents, resulting in 34 fatalities, 43 serious injuries, 404 moderate injuries, and 329 minor injuries. In 2023: 4,595 accidents, with 27 fatalities, 46 serious injuries, 317 moderate injuries, and 292 minor injuries. In 2022: 5,285 accidents, causing 36 deaths, 30 serious injuries, 231 moderate injuries, and 246 minor injuries. He added that the increase in incidents coincides with the growing number of vehicles on the road and more people traveling during school holidays. 'This presents a real danger to road users and requires urgent cooperation from all sectors,' Al Ghaithi said. Main causes and response Officials pointed to speeding, poor vehicle maintenance, driver fatigue, and distracted driving as key contributors to the rise in accidents. 'We live in a time where vehicles and technology are advancing rapidly, but that comes with the responsibility to drive safely and avoid preventable tragedies,' Al Ghaithi added. The campaign aims to promote road safety awareness through targeted outreach, joint inspections, and coordination with entities such as the Ministry of Interior, Roads and Transport Authority, and the private sector. Brigadier General Ahmed Al Sam Al Naqbi, Head of the Traffic Awareness and Safety Team at the Federal Traffic Council, said the goal is to reduce fatalities through better awareness and enforcement. 'High temperatures increase the risk of tyre blowouts, vehicle fires, and loss of control, especially when cars are poorly maintained,' he said. Brigadier General Al Naqbi urged drivers to regularly inspect their tyres for wear and pressure, avoid speeding, and ensure that essential vehicle systems such as air conditioning and brakes are functioning correctly. He also advised against driving while fatigued or unwell, as this impairs concentration and reaction times, increasing the likelihood of accidents during the high-risk summer months. Authorities continue to collaborate with various stakeholders to launch educational campaigns and impose stricter penalties to encourage safer driving habits throughout the season. The authorities also announced the start of a free 10-point vehicle safety check for motorists across the UAE at select fuel stations. This initiative is part of Dubai Police's annual 'Summer Without Accidents' campaign. The free inspections include checks on: The campaign, running from July 1 to September 1, targets motorists and travelers preparing for long trips during school holidays and summer breaks.

These are the RTA's top tips to stay safe on the roads this summer

The summer months are a testing time for all, naturally, given the extreme temperatures and the effects that come with it. A brand new road safety campaign, 'Summer Without Accidents', by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is aiming to offer motorists in Dubai the support they need this season with a series of public services directives – reducing avoidable accidents and improving safety in mobility. Launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Dubai Police, the campaign will run from July through to September, with a broader objective to achieve as part of the traffic awareness strategy for this peak season. What are the directives? Another important part of the campaign is to increase awareness about the importance of regular basic vehicle maintenance before any journey, and more in-depth checks at regular intervals throughout the season. Simple inspections like checking the tyre pressure, engine oil, coolant levels, and looking for fluid leaks before you set off can prevent mid-road breakdowns and reduce the risk of accidents. RTA's top tips for car health: Make sure the air conditioning system works properly to keep the vehicle interior cool during extreme heat. Check engine oil and radiator coolant levels regularly, as overheating is more likely in summer. Maintain correct tyre pressure and replace worn tyres to avoid blowouts. Keep the brake system clean and replace worn parts. Clean windows and headlights for better visibility. Avoid parking under direct sunlight for long periods to prevent the vehicle interiors and systems from overheating. A point highlighted with extreme emphasis is children's safety, a major summer hazard we have seen over the years. Parents have been urged by authorities to not leave their children behind in cars unattended, even if air-conditioned and even for a short period of time. Children can suffer from heatstroke or suffocation in a sealed car within minutes. Where to look out for them? The wide range of public outreach initiatives in the campaign include awareness messages displayed on digital billboards across the city, at Customer Happiness Centres, and on RTA's smart apps and social media channels, with government and private sector partners also joining in to amplify the reach. To spread the message further, RTA is engaging with the community through popular events such as Dubai Summer Surprises and student summer camps that attract public attention. Each awareness initiative is tailored to suit the event and audience, with special emphasis on reaching families and young drivers. The effects of extreme heat As the temperatures continue to climb, residents are being urged by the NCM and experts alike to protect themselves from the scorching temperatures by taking the necessary precautions to prioritise health and safety, as the temperatures are more than just uncomfortable. They pose serious risks to our health, and this in turn affects road safety. Residents have been encouraged to stay indoors during peak hours, especially during daylight hours and in the afternoons, as well as wearing loose, light-coloured clothing, carrying umbrellas and sunglasses and wearing sunscreen. Hydration is key, and one must stay hydrated by intaking lots of water, electrolytes, and other refreshing fluids like anise, mint, hibiscus, and green tea. @rta_dubai > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in

Motorists urged to perform vehicle checks in summer

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a broad array of awareness initiatives under its annual campaign, Summer Without Accidents, in coordination with the Ministry of Interior and Dubai Police General Headquarters. The campaign includes awareness messages displayed across Dubai's streets, on electronic screens at Customer Happiness Centres, smart apps, and social media platforms of RTA and its government and private sector partners. Running from the beginning of July until the end of September 2025, the campaign forms part of RTA's operational plan for traffic awareness. It aligns with the Authority's vision and strategic objectives to enhance road safety throughout the Emirate of Dubai. Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at the Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA, stated: 'RTA urges all motorists to conduct regular and routine maintenance checks, including a quick inspection before setting off. This should involve a visual check of tyre pressure, engine oil and coolant levels, and ensuring there are no oil or water leaks beneath the vehicle. Such quick checks help prevent unexpected breakdowns, which can increase the risk of traffic accidents and, in turn, affect road safety levels across the Emirate.' "RTA is organising a series of summer events, including participation in Dubai Summer Surprises and summer camps for students. It is also keen to raise awareness among individuals in a manner appropriate to each event and tailored to the age group targeted. RTA also aims to deliver the seasonal awareness messages for summer 2025 to the widest possible segment of society to help instil the concept of traffic safety among the public,' he added. Al Khzaimy highlighted the grave danger of leaving children unattended inside vehicles, warning that this behaviour can result in suffocation and death within minutes, even if the air conditioning is on, as it does not provide sufficient protection in a sealed environment. He urged parents, particularly mothers who drop off and pick up their children from school, never to leave children in the car, not even for a short period. He stressed that raising awareness of these risks is vital to protecting children's lives. Tips for Drivers: • Ensure that your vehicle's air conditioning system is functioning properly and effectively cooling the interior during the hot summer days. • Check that engine oil and radiator coolant levels are in good condition, especially in summer when engine temperatures can rise to extreme levels. • Make sure tyre pressure is correct and that tyres are in good condition to avoid blowouts while driving in high temperatures. • Keep the brake system clean and well-maintained. Replace any worn brake components as needed to ensure optimal braking performance. • Regularly keeping the vehicle tidy and clean helps with early fault detection and contributes to the vehicle's longevity. Always ensure the windscreen, rear and side windows, and headlights are clean for clear visibility. • Avoid parking under direct sunlight for long periods. Whenever possible, park in shaded areas to protect the vehicle from extreme heat.

RTA bans tyres over 5 years old on UAE roads; issues summer driving advisory

As the UAE enters the peak of summer with temperatures soaring up to 50°C, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has issued an urgent reminder for motorists to conduct routine vehicle checks and servicing. The goal is to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users during the harshest months of the year. In coordination with the Ministry of Interior and Dubai Police, the RTA has launched its annual campaign titled 'Summer Without Accidents', emphasizing precautionary measures to avoid traffic incidents caused by the extreme weather. Ahmed Al Khzaimy, director of traffic at RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, emphasized the importance of simple yet effective maintenance: '(We) urge all motorists to conduct regular and routine maintenance checks, including a quick inspection before setting off. This should involve a visual check of tyre pressure, engine oil and coolant levels, and ensuring there are no oil or water leaks beneath the vehicle.' He explained that such quick inspections could help prevent unexpected breakdowns, which tend to increase the risk of traffic accidents and negatively affect road safety across the Emirate. Tyres: The Critical Contact Point With the Road Authorities have particularly stressed the need for motorists to check their tyres carefully. Tyres are the only part of a vehicle that comes in direct contact with the road, and under the intense summer heat, worn-out or old tyres are at risk of bursting. Such incidents can lead to severe road accidents with disastrous consequences. Highlighting the dangers, Abu Dhabi authorities shared a video showing multiple vehicles, including a truck and several cars, losing control due to damaged tyres. The vehicles skidded across the roads, crashed into barriers, overturned, or sustained significant damage, all posing additional hazards to other road users. The Five-Year Tyre Rule RTA regulations strictly prohibit tyres that are older than five years from being used on UAE roads. This rule aims to reduce tyre-related accidents, which spike during the summer months. Speaking to local news media outlet Khaleej Time, Thomas Edelmann, founder and managing director of RoadSafetyUAE, said: 'The number of vehicles parked on the hard shoulder with tyre defects increases in summer. Tyre debris, mainly from decomposing commercial vehicle tyres, can be seen more during the hot summer months.' Edelmann added: 'The solution is to continuously educate motorists about the importance of tyre safety and maintenance. Tyres must be procured, fitted and maintained properly, especially during summer.' The Deadly Danger of Leaving Children in Cars One of the most alarming risks highlighted in the 'Summer Without Accidents' campaign is the danger of leaving children unattended inside vehicles. The RTA warned that children left in cars can suffer from suffocation and death within minutes, even if the air conditioning is on. Ahmed Al Khzaimy strongly urged parents: 'Not to leave their children in the car, not even for a short period.' He stressed that the air conditioning does not provide sufficient protection in a sealed environment where temperatures can rise rapidly and dangerously. RTA's Essential Tips for Safe Summer Driving To help motorists stay safe during the hot summer months, the RTA shared the following practical tips: Ensure your vehicle's air conditioning is functioning properly and effectively cooling the interior during hot engine oil and radiator coolant levels regularly, especially in summer when engine temperatures can correct tyre pressure and inspect tyre condition carefully to avoid blowouts caused by high your brake system clean and well-maintained; replace worn brake components to ensure optimal braking the vehicle tidy and clean, this helps with early fault detection and prolongs the vehicle's lifespan. Always ensure windscreens, windows, and headlights are clean for clear parking under direct sunligt for extended periods. Whenever possible, park in shaded areas to protect the vehicle from extreme heat summer temperatures reaching dangerous highs, the RTA's campaign serves as a crucial reminder that simple preventive measures can save lives on the roads.
