No Republican candidate yet for secondary Sunbury City Council election

SUNBURY — A Republican candidate for a secondary Sunbury City Council race in November has yet to be announced, according to the Northumberland County Election's Office. Each party has until Sept. 15 to name a candidate for the two-year seat, according to Northumberland County Director of Elections Lindsay Phillips. Northumberland County Democratic Committee Chairperson, John J. Merchlinsky III, announced the Democratic committee chose Victoria Rosancrans as their candidate. The seat became open when former Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned to become city treasurer. Merchlinsky said Rosancrans is a longtime community leader and advocate who would bring three decades of volunteer service and proven leadership to the position. The secondary election came to be after Martina ran for and won the Republican nomination for city treasurer in May. She is unopposed for the November General Election. She was appointed to fill the vacancy left when former Treasurer Kevin Troup retired to pursue a seat on city council. Martina stepped down from from city council after she was appointed treasurer. Troup, current Councilman Nate Savidge and Andres Manresa all advanced out of the primary and will be competing for two four-year seats on council. The secondary election was announced by the Northumberland County Election's Office last month. Northumberland County Republican Chairperson Deb Betz could not be reached for comment. Sunbury City Council members John Barnhart, Jim Eister, Savidge and Mayor Josh Brosious are waiting for a decision from Northumberland County president Judge Paige Rosini on who will fill the vacant seat until January. Solicitor Joel Wiest filed a petition to the court after council could not agree on an appointment for the seat. The two candidates that were voted on at a council meeting nearly two weeks ago were Rosancrans and city resident Andrew Ramos. Both received two votes, and council decided to petition the court to fill the vacancy. Rosini does not have to choose between the two, and can appoint anyone she wants to fill the seat. Northumberland County Democratic Party needs to name replacement for Shikellamy seat

SUNBURY — Shikellamy School Board Democratic nominee Victoria Rosancrans officially withdrew from the ballot after being named the Democratic candidate for Sunbury City Council in a secondary election in November. Officials from the Northumberland County Board of Elections Office said the Democratic Party has not named a replacement for the General Election which originally saw five candidates advance out of the primary for four open seats. Current Shikellamy school director Jenna Eister-Whitaker was the only incumbent to survive the race and won dual nominations, while political newcomers Chris Bucher and Tara Sprenkel both also won dual nominations. Eister-Whitaker received 475 Democratic votes and 908 Republican votes, while Bucher received 498 Democratic votes and 1,046 Republican votes in May. Sprenkel received 606 Democratic votes and 1,101 Republican votes, while Rosancrans received 585 Democratic votes to round off the field. Another political newcomer, Dennis Deitrich, won a Republican nomination with 934 votes. According to Lindsay Phillips, the chief registrar for the county board of elections, the Democratic Party has until Sept. 15 to name a replacement for Rosancrans if they choose. She also said any Independent candidates must file by Aug. 1. Barring any other candidates, and if Eister-Whitaker, Sprenkel, Bucher and Deitrich go on to win the General Election on Nov. 4, they would join directors Wendy Wiest, Slade Shreck, Lori Garman, Julie Brosius and Joe Stutzman to fill out the board in December when they would take office.

Judge to pick Sunbury City Council appointment

SUNBURY — Who will become the newest Sunbury City Council member is officially in the hands of Northumberland County Judge Paige Rosini. City officials petitioned the court to select a member of the public to serve until January, following deadlocked voting on an appointment Monday. The four current council members voted 2-2 on candidates Victoria Rosancrans and Andrew Ramos, who both applied for the open seat. Rosancrans and Ramos were also joined by James Brumbach, Andres Manresa and former Treasurer Kevin Troup in the list of applicants looking to fill a vacant seat until January. The seat was left open when former Sunbury Councilwoman Lisa Martina resigned last month. Martina was appointed to fill the city treasurer seat after Troup resigned his position in May. Martina ran for the position and won in May. She is the only candidate on the ballot this fall. Solicitor Joel Wiest filed the petition Thursday and listed the names of all five candidates, but by law, Rosini can pick one of them or none of them. The judge can order city officials to once again try to fill the seat on their own, or she can name a person of her choice to fill the seat. Rosini can decide on the seat when she deems fit. Council members Jim Eister, Nate Savidge, John Barnhart, and Mayor Josh Brosious conducted a public interview of all five candidates before voting. Brosious asked Ramos, who he defeated in May for the mayor's spot, Manresa and Rosancrans about previous elections they ran in and were defeated. The mayor asked why council should appoint them when the public didn't elect them. Rosancrans, who was defeated in two previous attempts at council, once by nine votes, said she was not concerned with the previous elections and is a resident of Sunbury who loves her city and will continue to try to improve the lives of all residents. Ramos agreed and said he also ran with a vision of improving Sunbury, and that vision has not changed just because he lost. Manresa, who also lost a previous bid for council, is currently the Democratic Party nominee in the race in November, when he squares off against Savidge and Troup for one of the two open seats. The seat that was to be filled Monday night will also be on the ballot in a secondary election that would be for a two-year term to finish out Martina's seat. Rosancrans was named the Democratic nominee for the ballot, while the Republican Party has yet to name a candidate. Councilman John Barnhart nominated Rosancrans for the temporary seat and a vote was taken. Eister and Savidge voted no, while Barnhart and Brosious voted in favor, but the motion failed. Eister then nominated Ramos and another vote was taken. Eister and Savidge voted in favor of Ramos, while Barnhart and Brosious voted no. Council meets again July 28 inside City Hall, on Market Street, in Sunbury. Solve the daily Crossword

Outgoing superintendent runs last Shikellamy school board meeting

SUNBURY — Shikellamy Superintendent Jason Bendle will continue his day-to-day duties until Aug. 5 but served his last school board meeting in the district Thursday night. Bendle officially announced his resignation from the district on June 5 and agreed to remain the district's leader until Aug. 5 when he takes over as superintendent of Berwick Area School District. Bendle previously said he will miss the district and working with the administration, teachers, staff and school board. 'I am proud of the work that was accomplished together here at Shikellamy,' he said. 'I wish the district nothing but the best moving forward.' The Berwick Area School District board of directors held a special meeting in June, hiring Bendle by an 8-1 count and giving him a five-year contract. Bendle still had more than two years remaining on his Shikellamy contract. Bendle was hired by Shikellamy in 2019 following his departure from Danville. Shikellamy board President Wendy Wiest thanked Bendle for his service to the district. 'I would like to personally thank Dr. Bendle for his fiscal responsibility, vision, leadership and professionalism to put Shikellamy in a strong financial and educational position,' she said. 'I wish him much success in his next endeavor.' Bendle touted the district's financial situation and said he was proud the district did not raise taxes in the past three years. 'It has been a privilege to lead this district and I will never forget the accomplishments we did together,' Bendle said. Shikellamy continues to search for a new superintendent while also waiting for at least three new school directors to join the board after the general election. The November ballot will feature five candidates for four open seats. Political newcomers Tara Sprenkel and Chris Bucher and incumbent Jenna Eister-Whitaker all won dual nominations. Political newcomer Dennis Deitrich won in the Republican primary. Community activist Victoria Rosancrans won in the Democratic primary, but withdrew from the race. The Northumberland County Democratic Party is interviewing potential candidates to fill Rosancrans' spot on the ballot.
