1 2 3 Berhampur: Police on Thursday arrested three more persons for their alleged involvement in the physical torture of two Dalit persons near Singipur under Dharakote police station limits in Ganjam district on June 26. The National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC ) also took suo motu cognizance of the incident and sought reports from the govt in next two weeks. "The three arrested persons include Sunil Swain (21) and Ashish Barala (19) of Bethuar and Santosh Kumar Polai (32) of Nabaratnapur," Chandrika Swain, inspector in-charge of Dharakote police station, said. With the fresh arrests, the total number of arrests in the case has gone up to 16. Police said they were searching for others allegedly involved in the incident. Two persons of Singipur, belonging to the Scheduled Caste, were allegedly beaten up, forced to eat grass and drink drain water on suspicion of illegally smuggling cattle by a group of people. The accused persons had also snatched their mobile phones and cash and their heads were forcibly tonsured partially. The report is expected to include the action taken against the perpetrators and compensation, if any, provided to the victims. The incident triggered widespread outrage, while opposition political parties, including BJD, Congress and the Left parties, condemned the incident and sought stringent action against the accused persons. A fact-finding team of the Congress also visited Singipur and discussed with the victims. Dalit Mahasabha, an outfit of Scheduled Caste in Ganjam unit, on Wednesday demonstrated in front of the revenue divisional commissioner (southern division) in Berhampur demanding strong action against the accused.
