Suntory will gauge U.S. consumer sentiment for whisky price hike
Suntory Holdings will consider price increases in line with consumer sentiment for ultra-premium whisky it exports to the U.S., after the two countries struck a trade deal that set tariffs on imported Japanese goods at 15%. "We have to learn and read the sentiment in the United States,' Co-Chairman and CEO Takeshi Niinami said on Tuesday. The beverage giant could still consider raising U.S. prices for premium whisky lines, Niinami said. That's despite Suntory's feeling — like many other Japanese firms — that the tariff is a "relief' and that it can absorb some of the added costs, he said. Niinami said the company is "overreliant on the U.S. and Japan' and has realized the importance of emerging markets including China, Southeast Asian nations and India. Suntory said in April that it could shift products to its home market and other countries in Asia if tariffs were to make its whisky prohibitively pricey in America. The trade pact reached earlier this month will impose levies on imports including automobiles from Japan, a key U.S. ally, while creating a $550 billion fund to make investments in America.

A huge free Japanese food fest from Smorgasburg is happening this weekend
The Williamsburg coastline will look a little different on Saturday, August 2, when local food festival Smorgasburg partners with Suntory, Japan's premium malt beer, to present " Japan Meets Brooklyn – Matsuri," a one-day celebration of Japanese food, drinks and culture. The free event will take over the outdoor food market's 90 Kent Avenue space from 11am to 6pm this Saturday. The matsuri (Japanese for 'festival') will build on Smorgasburg's intense fanbase—it is the country's largest weekly open-air food market, after all—to present six special guest vendors and a handful of activities designed to bring Brooklyn a dash of the Rising Sun. Suntory is going out for the event, with a garden section doling out their signature Kami-Awa 'Creamy Foam' pour and an exclusive curated omakase set, pairing a tasting of three beers with snacks from three vendors. Need some carbs beyond that beer-filled bless? The fair will have plenty of freshly baked buns, with stands from Greenpoint's Taku Sando, matcha and onigirazu (sushi sandwiches) from Tokuyamatcha, and temaki sets and assorted sandos from a partnership between Nami Nori and Postcard Bakery. Habble will provide karaage chicken and Wagyu beef "sushi," and the sweet-toothed can take refuge with kakigori (shaved ice) from Tonchin US, or head to Let's Bounce, purveyors of New York's bounciest cheesecakes and cream puffs. But it is all fun and games, with Candy5NYC making their popular live candy on-site, local artist Hiroshi Masuda drawing portraits, and leading calligraphy workshops. Those looking to take in a show can find the New York Sumo Club, which will demo some of their impressive moves to the sound of OMNY Taiko 's live Taiko drum performances, or Seoul 69 mixing an all-vinyl Japanese City Pop set.

Scotch Fans May Go Nuts For Laphroaig's Newest Cask Strength Release
Laphroaig 2025 Càirdeas: Lore Cask Strength Laphroaig is one of the whisky world's most iconic brands, and it's almost impossible to discuss the current state of Islay Scotch without giving a nod to the Suntory-owned producer. One of the expressions that continues to keep Laphroaig top of mind is the ever-popular Lore release, a blend of single malts aged between seven and 21 years across a variety of cask types. Now, Laphroaig fans have something new to celebrate: the beloved Lore bottling, this time at cask strength. Laphroaig's Càirdeas releases are annual bottlings pegged to Fèis Ìle, an Islay festival where fans get a first chance at trying the new whisky. This year's Càirdeas is Lore Cask Strength, which dials the ABV up to 59.6% instead of the normal 48%. (That's 119.2 proof versus 96 proof.) Like the classic Lore, it's aged across ex-bourbon, European oak, Oloroso sherry barrels, and quarter casks. We had a chance to try the limited-edition release for ourselves. The nose is punchy, bold, and close-to-dangerously peaty, but it never quite totters so far into smoke as to completely drown out other scents. Just below those first smoky vapors lie sweet, cooked fruits, particularly preserved pear and orange rind. Toasted meringue, lemon oil, and wood varnish accumulate once the initial smoke recedes just a tad, followed by herbal scents of rosemary, thyme, burnt sage, and roasted pine nuts. Peat once again leads on the palate, with an early burst of smoked caramel and campfire embers. The whisky stays sweet and gets increasingly fruity with each sip, with charred citrus peels as a prominent flavor. Herbaceousness isn't far behind, here in the form of mint and clove chewing gums. There's a thread of carbolic soap, though not enough to scare away those even moderately familiar with smoky Islay Scotch. The finish is notably long—the extra proof really makes this act shine compared to the classic Lore expression—and once again rich in smoked caramel. Laphroaig 2025 Càirdeas: Lore Cask Strength carries a suggested retail price of $110 for a 750 milliliter bottle (U.S. release), and it's available for a limited time at select retailers starting this summer.
