Chance for Dragons to settle the score with Super Gillies
Chepauk Super Gillies and Dindigul Dragons will square off for a berth in the final of the TNPL when the two sides meet in Qualifier 2 at the NPR College ground here on Friday. Super Gillies have been the standout team of the tournament, winning all seven league matches, but was given a reality check in Qualifier 1 by IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, as they slumped to a chastening 79-run defeat. Dragons, the reigning champions, meanwhile, produced a clinical performance against Trichy Grand Cholas, winning by six wickets in the Eliminator and will have a spring in their step going into the knockout clash. For Super Gillies, the loss to Tamizhans exposed the team's over-reliance on B. Aparajith and Vijay Shankar to do the heavy lifting with the bat. The four-time champions will need the other batters to make meaningful contributions and use their batting depth to get back to winning ways. Dragons, in contrast, will look to repeat their feat from last year, when they won three playoff contests and clinched their maiden title. The 'home' team displayed its superior bowling prowess, led by skipper R. Ashwin, whose all-round performance (3/28 & 83) helped brush aside Grand Cholas. However, there is a concern surrounding pace spearhead Sandeep Warrier who walked off at the start of his third over clutching his hamstring. During their previous meeting, Super Gillies prevailed by eight runs after Dragons made a mess of the chase from a position of strength. Ashwin's men now have a chance to settle the score and keep their title defence campaign alive.

Prem, Aashiq and Jagadeesan power Super Gillies into the playoffs
Chepauk Super Gillies stormed into the playoffs with a commanding six-wicket victory over SKM Salem Spartans in the final league match of the Salem-leg of the TNPL at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground on Thursday. Super Gillies rode on fluent half-centuries by opener K. Aashiq and the ever-reliable N. Jagadeesan to make it five out of five while Spartans stayed in the second spot with six points from five games. Aashiq and Mokit Hariharan came out all guns blazing , punishing both pace and spin with a flurry of boundaries, to set the tone in pursuit of the 161-run target. Aashiq was particularly severe on M. Poiyamozhi, striking two fours and a towering six while Mokit took the attack to Harish Kumar, clearing the ropes twice as Super Gillies raced to 71 without loss at the end of the PowerPlay. Just as the openers were cruising, Mokit dragged one on to the stumps off Hari Nishaanth. Jagadeesan joined Aashiq and immediately found his rhythm. The duo added 52 runs before Karthick Manikandan dismissed Aashiq. Jagadeesan fell after a 25-ball 50 before skipper B. Aparajith sealed the win with a huge six. Earlier, Spartans openers S. Abishiek and Hari Nishaanth took the team to 63 without loss in eight overs. However, it soon slumped to 95 for five. Left-arm spinner M. Silambarasan dismissed Nishaanth while pacer J. Prem Kumar removed Nidhish Rajagopal. Prem later castled both R. Vivek and Abishiek. R. Kavin was run out with Mokit effecting a direct hit. However, A late flourish from Sunny Sandhu (30, 18b, 1x4, 2x6) and M. Mohammed (28 n.o., 11b, 3x4, 2x6) lifted Spartans to 160 which was not enough. The scores: SKM Salem Spartans 160/7 in 20 overs (Hari Nishaanth 31, S. Abishiek 47, Sunny Sandhu 30, J. Prem Kumar 3/19) lost to Chepauk Super Gillies 162/4 in 16.3 overs (K. Swapnil Singh's all-round show blows away Royal Kings
Swapnil Singh produced a fine all-round performance, first a brilliant 14-ball 45 (2x4, 5x6) followed by a miserly spell (4-0-26-2) to help Chepauk Super Gillies thrash Nellai Royal Kings by 41 runs in a TNPL-9 league match at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground here on Monday. It was the second successive win for Super Gillies who are leading the table with four points from two matches. Asked to bat first, Super Gillies amassed 212 for seven — the fourth-highest total in the league — riding on useful cameos from four of the top-six batters. Opener K. Aashiq (54), appearing in his second match, scored a breezy half-century and added 83 for the second wicket alongside skipper B. Aparajith (41) to set a solid foundation. The left-hander looked compact while driving and cutting the pacers. Against the spinners, he lofted cleanly down the ground and He got to his half-century with a swept six over square leg off left-arm spinner Sachin Rathi. However, it was Vijay Shankar (47 n.o.) and Swapnil, the experienced campaigners, who gave the final flourish, raining sixes and plundering 78 runs in the last five. Vijay Shankar first took on Rathi, hitting two sixes and a four in the 16th over. Swapnil then joined the party and used the long handle to brutal effect, smashing pacer M. Udhaya Kumar for a hat-trick of sixes in the 18th over. By the time he was out in the final over, CSG had crossed 200. In reply, Royal Kings' chase was never on track and was reduced to 46 for three with Swapnil striking twice in the sixth over and could never recover from it. The scores: Chepauk Super Gillies 212/7 in 20 overs (K. Aashiq 54, B. Aparajith 41, Vijay Shankar 47 n.o., Swapnil Singh 45, Sonu Yadav 2/42, V. Yudheeswaran 3/37) bt Nellai Royal Kings 171/9 in 20 overs (Arun Karthik 51, Muhammed Adnan Khan 48, Abhishek Tanwar 3/33, Swapnil 2/26, M. Silambarasan 2/18). Toss: NRK. Tuesday's match: SKM Salem Spartans vs Trichy Grand Cholas (7.15 p.m.).
