Clayface: Mike Flanagan Reveals Inspiration Behind DCU Movie
Mike Flanagan has opened up about the upcoming DC Universe movie that he worked on, revealing the Batman: The Animated Series episode that served as a big inspiration. Speaking to ComicBook in a recent interview, Flanagan revealed that the two-part episode 'Feat of Clay' from the 1990s animated series was what initially drew him to the character. 'Of course it was. I mean that is the perfect [story],' said Flanagan of the episodes. ''Feat of Clay,' Ron Perlman, to me, that's it. That two-parter knocked me out. The short answer is that is absolutely what inspired my script. That is the world I wanted to live in. Batman: The Animated Series when I was growing up was my Batman. As much as [Michael] Keaton was my Batman, The Animated Series really was my Batman.' The two-part episode details the origins of Matt Hagen, a.k.a. Clayface. In the episodes, after Hagen, a successful actor, is injured in a car crash, a businessman named Ronald Daggett offers him a mysterious substance to take that allows him to transform into anyone he wants. Hagen soon becomes addicted to it and begins working under Daggett to get more. Despite being inspired by the episode, the status of Flanagan's vision for Clayface remains mostly unknown. The Life of Chuck writer/director originally pitched the movie to James Gunn, who praised the script. However, earlier this month, reports surfaced that Hossein Amini (Drive) was hired to rewrite Flanagan's script. It's unclear how much is changing, but Flanagan hopes that the movie remains true to his original ideas. 'I don't know what they're doing with Clayface. I'm not directing it, and that filmmaker will need to make it their own,' Flanagan said. 'I know that they're doing work on the script. I'm off doing other things now, I really hope it remains true to the spirit of what I wanted it to be. But it's not my movie, so I'll be in the audience with you, anxious to see how it comes out.' Currently, not a whole lot about the movie is known, but the list of directors being looked at does corroborate reports that the film will be a horror-thriller of sorts. On Threads, James Gunn called Clayface a 'DCU story,' meaning that it will be set within the continuity of Gunn and Peter Safran's new shared DC Universe that recently kicked off with the animated Creature Commandos series. Clayface is expected to go into production this coming October, though no casting has yet been announced. The movie currently has a September 11, 2026, release date from Warner Bros. Pictures. How to Train Your Dragon's Astrid Actor Gives Strong Response to Casting Backlash in Remake
How to Train Your Dragon star Nico Parker, who portrays Astrid Hofferson in the upcoming live-action remake, gave a strong response to the critics of her casting in the remake. Notably, America Ferrera voiced the character in the original animated trilogy and the associated projects. Nico Parker spoke on the backlash against her casting in the How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake during an interview with The Times of London. The controversy is that Parker didn't have certain features of her animated counterpart, including blonde hair and blue eyes. Parker began by acknowledging that there were critics who love the originals and have some reservations about the remake. 'There's some people that really love the animated movies and really want to see an exact play-by-play of that film, and I hope that you can watch [the new version] and find something that you love about it, regardless,' Parker said. She then proceeded to dismiss the criticism leveled against her casting for her appearance. 'But for the people that just hate inclusivity, hate change — when it comes to that side of things, I just don't care,' she added. 'If I wouldn't value your opinion on most things in life, I can't value your opinion on my hair. If I did, I would go mad.' America Ferrera lent her voice to Astrid in the animated movies and other projects. Her parents are originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras. As for Parker, she is the daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and screenwriter and filmmaker Ol Parker. According to Parker, there was a significant dearth of 'mixed race or Black icons' in Hollywood in the past. She believes that while things have changed over the years in terms of representation, 'there's still a long way to go — for women in general, in terms of new parts, original material and female-led stories.' She mentioned that 'everything's changing' and that she would like to 'contribute to that change at some point.' How to Train Your Dragon debuts in US theaters on June 13, 2025. Harry Potter's Tom Felton Returns as Draco Malfoy, but Not in Movies
Tom Felton teased his return as Draco Malfoy during a red carpet appearance at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards. While speaking to reporters, he confirmed he would revisit the iconic role on Broadway, marking a new chapter in the universe. Tom Felton confirmed he will be joining the cast of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as Draco Malfoy during a June 5 appearance on TODAY, announcing he will join the production for a 19-week run starting November 11, 2025. This marks Felton's Broadway debut and his first time portraying Draco Malfoy since the final Harry Potter film in 2011. Felton said, 'It's very much a pinch-me situation. I let go of that character 16 years ago, and now I get to step back into his shoes, as a father this time, in a new story.' He added, 'The play is such an independent story from the 'Potter' films… now we're no longer children. We actually are the parents.' The production takes place 19 years after the events of the original series, with adult versions of Harry, Draco, Ron, and Hermione sending their children to Hogwarts. Felton becomes the first actor from the original film cast to join the Broadway adaptation. 'Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me,' he said. The play's producers, Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, said in a statement, 'Tom's return to Hogwarts bridges generations of fans and breathes new life into a beloved story.' Felton described the moment he donned Draco's wig again: 'I just immediately cried. It was just sort of like a blast from the past.' The Lyric Theatre in New York City will host the play until March 22, 2026. Presale tickets open on June 10 at 11 a.m. ET, with general sales starting June 12. Since premiering in London in 2016, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has become Broadway's highest-grossing non-musical play. Originally reported by Anubhav Chaudhry on SuperHeroHype. Fantastic Four: A Rock Named Jennifer Replaced The Thing on First Steps' Set
had a rock named Jennifer used as a stand-in for The Thing. The upcoming Marvel Studios production is one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. Directed by Matt Shakman, the movie features Bachrach alongside Joseph Quinn, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and many more. Matt Shakman recently sat down for a conversation and revealed that they used a rock they named Jennifer as a stand-in for The Thing on The Fantastic Four: First Steps' set. The makers used CGI and performance capture on Ebon Moss-Bachrach to bring the Thing to life on-screen. However, the rock named Jennifer also aided them in the process. Recounting the process, the director told Empire, 'We went out to the desert and found a rock that looked exactly how we thought The Thing should look, and we filmed it in every single shot that The Thing appears in in the movie, under every lighting environment.' Moreover, Ebon Moss-Bachrach chimed in to express his thoughts on his character, the Thing, AKA Ben Grimm's presentation on screen. He conveyed, 'It's a little bit heady to think about all the hundreds of people that are helping animate this character. I just had faith that they would make my performance so much cooler. I'm very, very happy with the way Ben looks.' Additionally, The Punisher star asserted that he felt connected to the Thing, as he hails from New York as well. He further spoke of The Fantastic Four character's association with creator Jack Kirby. Moss-Bachrach said, 'He's a Lower East Side guy. A lot of this character was a homage to his father, and that, to me, is very meaningful.' Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is all set to come to theaters next month on July 25.
