Jaecoo 7 SHS - long-term review 2025
'What the hell is that?' asks the delivery driver, screeching his van to a halt mere inches from the Jaecoo 7's rear. This is, I think, the seventh time I've been asked this question – or ruder variations thereof – in the two days the Chinese interloper has been parked in front of my house. To be honest, right now I'm unsure how to answer that question. Not least because I'm not certain of the pronunciation of 'Jaecoo'. (Jai-coo? Jay-coo? J'atchoo?) Advertisement - Page continues below Google 'Jaecoo 7 rivals' and you'll find reference to everything from the Dacia Bigster to a Range Rover, which is quite the spread. So what does the 7 rival? And whatever it does rival, does it… outrival them? That's what it's here to answer. What the Jaecoo 7 isn't – to the surprise of my many interrogators – is an EV. Though, yes, it's a new Chinese arrival (Jaecoo is a sub-brand of state-owned Chery, and arrives in the UK alongside sister brand Omoda), no, this one's not electric. At least not fully electric: the 7 comes in either pure petrol or plug-in hybrid guise. We've gone for the latter, grandly dubbed the Super Hybrid System (SHS). This sees a 1.5-litre turbo petrol supplemented by an additional e-motor on the front wheels fed from an 18kWh battery, offering a total output of 201bhp and an official 56 miles of electric-only driving. That's a more substantial e-range than many PHEVs. Could come in handy. Could just be an even-heavier second powertrain to lug around. The 7 also isn't, despite the name, a seven-seater. Room for five only here, within an SUV similar in footprint to the Hyundai Tucson, VW Tiguan and BMW X1. Judged by the attention it's garnering, the 7 is more visually distinctive than any of that crew. Wearing optional Amazonite Blue paint, first impressions are… it looks tidy, right? The merits of that cheese-slicer grille will be, I suspect, a matter of personal taste, but the surfacing is smart and the detailing is neat. There's more than a hint of Evoque and Velar about its straight-edged profile. It looks, to me, quite expensive. Advertisement - Page continues below It isn't. At least not by modern SUV standards. The 7 range starts at a smidge over 30 grand, with this plug-in hybrid weighing in at £35,000 with all the trimmings. That looks like strong value if the 7 can mix it with premium offerings like the Audi Q3 and X1, fair value if it's up there with the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage… and a bit on the pricey side if it's playing in the Bigster/MG HS ballpool. We shall see.

Jaecoo J7 Phev signals strong shift towards hybrid mobility in Malaysia
OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia is witnessing a marked rise in public confidence surrounding the transition to new energy mobility, with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) emerging as a practical solution for consumers navigating range anxiety and reliability concerns. Central to this momentum is the successful introduction of the JAECOO J7 PHEV, launched in February 2025, which has rapidly gained traction in the local market. Positioned as a benchmark in the premium off-road SUV segment, the J7 PHEV integrates cutting-edge performance with a highly competitive pricing and warranty structure. Within just four months of its debut, over 800 units have been registered in Malaysia—a significant milestone reflecting the growing acceptance of hybrid technology in a traditionally internal combustion engine-dominated landscape. Equipped with OMODA | JAECOO's proprietary Super Hybrid System (SHS), the J7 PHEV offers a seamless blend of electric and fuel-powered efficiency. On a full tank and a fully charged battery, the SUV can cover more than 1,300 kilometres based on NEDC standards. The vehicle also boasts a class-leading all-electric range of 106 kilometres, catering to urban commuters seeking emission-free mobility within city limits, while ensuring extended travel capabilities for longer journeys. Emily Lek, Vice President of OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia, described the J7 PHEV as a segment leader in both innovation and practicality. She emphasised the importance of continuous consumer education regarding hybrid systems, particularly as awareness remains in its early stages within Malaysia. To that end, the company has initiated PHEV familiarisation sessions designed to support customers throughout their ownership experience. The brand's commitment to customer engagement was underscored during a recent handover event celebrating the delivery of 100 units to early adopters. Lek reaffirmed the company's dedication to supporting its growing user base, recognising these initial owners as vital ambassadors for the brand's push into electrified mobility. Among those celebrating their transition to hybrid ownership was Manivannan Manickam, who shared that the J7 PHEV has been a reliable and comfortable option for his family, eliminating frequent fuel stops and aligning perfectly with his lifestyle needs. Similarly, Singaporean owner Ian Chan undertook a cross-border journey to attend the community event in Kuala Lumpur, highlighting the model's long-range capability and the growing regional interest in hybrid mobility solutions. Fellow driver Andy Wong also praised the vehicle's design, features, and smooth drive, noting the educational value of the event in helping owners maximise their vehicle's efficiency. Beyond performance, the JAECOO J7 PHEV has set new benchmarks for safety and technological advancement in its category. Its hybrid powertrain delivers a total output of 341hp and 525 Nm of torque, supported by intelligent drive modes that let users choose between fuel efficiency or high-powered driving. Even in a power-depleted state, the vehicle achieves a remarkable fuel consumption of just 4.77 litres per 100 km. Priced at RM158,800, the J7 PHEV features comprehensive safety systems including Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), eight airbags, a Driver Monitoring System, Lane Departure Prevention, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Built for resilience in Malaysia's tropical climate, the SUV is equipped with an 18.3 kWh LFP battery engineered to withstand high temperatures and flooding, ensuring year-round dependability. With strong early demand and a growing community of hybrid adopters, the JAECOO J7 PHEV marks a significant step forward in Malaysia's clean mobility evolution. OMODA | JAECOO Malaysia remains focused on accelerating this transition, positioning the brand at the forefront of the country's emerging hybrid vehicle market.

Fuel-sipping Jaecoo J7 plug-in hybrid arrives in Mzansi
The SHS has arrived in SA as the new petrol-electric version of the Jaecoo J7 midsize SUV, and one of the most affordable plug-in hybrids in its segment. The first of several new electrified models from the Chinese brand, the new flagship SHS grows the J7 line-up to four variants after Jaecoo, sister brand of Chery, made its SA debut in April 2024. The J7 has been available as a 1.6 petrol turbo model with front wheel drive and outputs of 145kW and 290Nm. SHS is short for Super Hybrid System and combines a turbocharged 1.5 l petrol engine and an electric motor. The total outputs of 255kW and 525Nm are sent to the road via all-wheel drive. A dedicated hybrid transmission drives the wheels with different modes and is able to control the balance between energy consumption and performance. Jaecoo claims the vehicle sips only 5 l /100km and has 90km of pure electric drive range, and has a 1,200km combined driving range on a single tank with a fully charged battery. In my week-long test drive on a mix of urban and open roads, the J7 SHS averaged 5.2 l /100km, which was very close to the factory claim and an impressively low figure for a car of this size and power. The 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in only 20 minutes using a DC fast charger. It takes about two-and-a-half hours to charge at an AC public charger, or overnight on a regular 240V home socket. When fully charged the battery initially drained quickly, but once it got down to about 30% the car's energy recuperation system kept it at around that level, meaning we didn't have to plug it in to charge it.
