Five Andhra Pradesh cities selected for Swachh Survekshan awards
Vijayawada: Five cities from Andhra Pradesh, including Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam, were selected for the Swachh Survekshan awards in various categories.
The Union ministry of housing and urban affairs announced the winners, and the awards will be presented by Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar at a function in New Delhi on July 17.
State minister for municipal administration, Ponguru Narayana, will attend the event to receive the awards on behalf of the state.
The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) was selected in the Super Swachh League awards under the 'above 10 lakh population' category. The city previously won the 'cleanest big city award' in the 2018 edition of the Swachh Survekshan survey and regularly features among the top 10 cleanest cities in the country.
The Guntur Municipal Corporation was selected in the 3 to 10 lakh population category, while Tirupati Municipal Corporation won in the 50,000 to 3 lakh population segment. Apart from these, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) was selected for the special category ministerial award at the national level, and Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation was chosen for the ministerial award at the state level.

Swachh Andhra Corporation and the respective civic body officials received formal intimation from the ministry to attend the awards ceremony in Delhi. Chairman of Swachh Andhra Corporation, Kommareddy Pattabhiram, confirmed the selection of these five cities for the awards and said that civic bodies across the state are participating in the central sanitation ranking programmes.
The Swachh Survekshan Awards are given based on various parameters, including door-to-door garbage collection, cleanliness of public areas, citizen feedback, and sanitation infrastructure.
