Lorenzo Insigne, Federico Bernadeschi have Toronto FC contracts mutually terminated

Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernadeschi have become free agents after having their contracts with Toronto FC mutually terminated, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Insigne, 34, played 13 times for the MLS club in 2025, recording one goal and three assists. His contract was due to expire in June 2026. Advertisement Insigne was the second-highest paid player in the MLS behind reigning MVP Lionel Messi with a guaranteed compensation of $15.4 million, according to MLSPA's salary figures released in September 2024. He was linked with a move away from the club ahead of the 2025 campaign but, upon the unveiling of the club's new head coach Robin Fraser in January, general manager Jason Hernandez confirmed Insigne was likely to remain for the upcoming season, and they had received 'no offers' for the Italian. A European champion with Italy in 2021, Insigne joined Toronto a year later as a Designated Player under former President Bill Manning. He has suffered repeated calf injuries, limiting him to 76 appearances for the club. Fellow Euro 2020 champion Bernardeschi also departs the club three years after signing as a Designated Player. The 31-year-old has missed TFC's last four matches through suspension and injury, playing 15 times in the 2025 campaign, scoring four goals and assisting three. He has captained the team on six occasions this season. Multiple sources familiar with both Bernardeschi and Insigne told The Athletic in 2023 that Insigne and Bernardeschi did not get along before joining Toronto, and clashed early in their tenures at the club. Former President Manning, though, said Insigne helped the club recruit Bernardeschi, and that the pair had a 'very professional teammate relationship,' adding: 'They weren't buddies, but they were close enough.' Hernandez said in January that Insigne 'can influence MLS to a great degree' when he is at his best, but added: 'We just haven't seen enough of that from him when it comes to his availability.' The Athletic reported in May 2023 that Insigne, alongside compatriot and Toronto's second-highest paid player Bernardeschi, was at the center of the efforts to have head coach and sporting director Bob Bradley fired. Bradley was ousted from the position a month later. Advertisement Insigne came through Napoli's youth ranks, embarking on several loan spells across Italy before he was integrated into the first-team squad in the 2012-13 campaign. He made 434 appearances for the club, registering 122 goals and 95 assists, and won two Coppa Italias and a Supercoppa Italiana. Bernadeschi won three Serie A titles with Juventus before joining Toronto, having previously played for Fiorentina. By Joshua Kloke For Toronto FC, this move is more about changing the culture of the club than any on-field results. The club is attempting a wide-scale rebuild and wants to rid itself of contracts signed by previous executives and players who were brought in under the guidance of former coaches. New head coach Fraser wants to reward players who have showed well in training and have brought the right attitude to the club's rebuild. There is an understanding that TFC have a long road ahead of them get back to their glory days of the last decade. Ridding themselves of players who are not part of the future has been a priority for the entire club, including MLSE President Keith Pelley. While these moves might make TFC a worse — or at least less productive — club, the team felt they were necessary to continue changing the culture from the ground up. Given his lack of production, enormously high price tag and detrimental attitude on and off the field, it's worth calling Insigne among the biggest busts in MLS history.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to snap up former Chelsea and England star at Besiktas

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is bringing in a new striker (Picture: Getty Images) Besiktas have reached an agreement for a major signing this summer, bringing in Tammy Abraham from Roma. Still just 27 years old, Abraham has been in Italy since moving to Roma from Chelsea in 2021. However, he moved to AC Milan on loan last season, where he scored 10 goals in 44 games across all competitions. His first season with Roma was a huge success as he scored 27 goals, but things have tailed off for him since then, not helped by a serious injury. The 11-cap England international is now off to Turkey, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reporting that an agreement has been hashed out between the clubs and the player is ready to make the move. Confirmation is yet to be reached, but Abraham is due to fly to Türkiye and is expected to complete the switch in the near future. The deal has been done for a fee of 'around' €20m (£17.1m) with Besiktas hoping the Englishman can help them challenge closer to the top of the Super Lig table next season. Tammy Abraham scored just three Serie A goals at AC Milan (Picture: Getty Images) Galatasaray comfortably won the league, with Besiktas finishing fourth and 33 points behind the champions. There were encouraging signs under Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer, though, after the former Manchester United boss took over in mid-January, beating Gala when they met in March. Abraham will be joining a Besiktas front line which was led by Ciro Immobile last season, finishing the club's top-scorer with 19 goals in all competitions at 35 years old. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made 20 appearances in all competitions for Besiktas last season (Picture: Getty Images) He will also be playing alongside fellow Englishman Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been with Besiktas since 2023. Abraham's career was badly hampered by a serious injury, suffering an ACL tear in April 2023 which sidelined him for a year. When he left Roma for Milan in August 2024 he said he was still recovering from the problem. Abraham did win the Supercoppa Italiana with AC Milan (Picture: Getty Images) 'When I saw Milan were interested in me I did nothing but wait, telling myself a thousand times that it was the place I wanted to be,' he said last year. 'Physically I feel better. I am still recovering from my injury but I feel really good. 'Wanting to leave Roma? No. It's not that I've lost faith at all, but the fans know how important Roma are to me. But sometimes in life there are cases in which you have to move up a level, set the bar higher, and I have I thought this was the right opportunity. I wish Roma the best, but now I'm focused on Milan. 'The first year went very well with Roma, then the second was more difficult. The players are human beings and the injury dragged me down for some time, but this at Milan is my great opportunity to demonstrate that I'm back. My ambition is always to win.' Wolves join pack of clubs keen on Milan's Musah

Premier League club Wolves are reportedly the latest club to register an interest in Milan midfielder Yunus Musah, just days after the player was linked with Nottingham Forest. According to what has been reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport, both Wolves and Forest are keeping a very close eye on the player – who appears to be considered expendable by the Rossoneri amongst a wealth of midfield options and more on the horizon. EPA-EFE/KEVIN JAIRAJ Could Musah leave Milan for Wolves? Musah signed for Milan in 2023 from La Liga club Valencia, for a fee in the region of €20 million. Since then, the 22-year-old has played 59 times in Serie A but it now seems likely he will not add to that tally. He has not scored a single goal for the club and was a part of the team that lifted last season's Supercoppa Italiana. (Photo by) Speaking earlier in the week, Rossoneri sporting director Igli Tare said that 'I consider Musah a very good player but we're looking for midfielders with the right traits for Allegri's project. We want deep-lying midfielders in a three-man midfield and Musah doesn't quite fit the role – he's better in a double pivot or as a mezzala.'
