Costco's First Standalone Gas Station Is Coming to California — but There's a Catch

Among its dedicated shoppers, Costco is best known for bulk groceries and fueling snack cravings, but its newest venture has the store completely shifting gears. The members-only warehouse club is set to open its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, according to reporting by the Orange County Register. The 40-pump station, expected to open by spring 2026, will be the retailer's largest gas station and sell Costco's in-house brand of Kirkland Signature Gasoline. Costco opened its first-ever gas station in 1995 and, as the major retailer stated, its gas is "formulated with powerful deposit control additives that clean your engine and reduce harmful pre-existing deposit buildup." It also promises to improve performance, restore fuel economy, and reduce emissions. Related: Costco Is Finally Doing Something About Its Long Checkout Lines As reported by Supermarket News, Mission Viejo mayor Bob Resch told CSP Daily News that "The city of Mission Viejo is excited that Costco will build its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo and become a new business partner for the Freeway Center." The new standalone gas station will be built to replace a former Bed Bath & Beyond, the Register reported. But here's the catch: The new location's fuel services will be exclusive to Costco members who pay between $65 and $130 per year for their membership. Costco also expects business to be booming. According to its city planning documents, the gas station expects 9,500 vehicles to stop there every day. Costco Gas Stations are already available at select warehouse locations and, as stated on the retailer's site, "offer consistently low, member-exclusive prices." Related: The Internet Loves These 7 Premade Meals From Costco, and You Will Too It's important to note that the standalone gas station will not offer the retailer's beloved food court staples like the hot dog, rotisserie chicken, or chicken bake, as it will not feature a convenience store at all. But, not to worry. Once you fuel up at the new gas station, you can drive over to the nearest Costco warehouse, located about two miles away, to get your favorite bites. Designed for retailers by retailers, it is the only event where operators, CPG companies and technology solution providers can meet to educate, innovate and develop collaborative relationships with companies, peers and partners. 'Grocery retailers are standing at the crossroads of disruption and opportunity. With the rise of retail media, data-driven loyalty, and unified commerce, the industry needs a forum built for forward-thinkers—not status quo,' says Art Sebastian, founder and CEO of NexChapter and Grocery NEXT Chairman of the Board. 'Grocery NEXT is that space. We're bringing the best minds together to shape the next chapter in grocery retail—not five years from now, but right now.' Grocery NEXT takes place Sept. 10-12 at the Westin Chicago Northwest in Itasca, Ill. The grocery industry is undergoing rapid transformation.
