‘The Voice, It Turned Out, Belonged to a Small, Older Woman'

Supermoon Dear Diary: I was walking down a street on the Upper East Side one fall weeknight, lost in some personal problem, when I heard a voice shout: 'Stop!' The voice, it turned out, belonged to a small, older woman in a maroon coat. 'Back up and look up,' she said. I did as I was told. The several steps back I took brought me out from under an awning so that suddenly I could see the moon, big and brilliant, hanging over the street. I hadn't noticed just how bright a night it was. 'It's a supermoon,' the woman said. 'I heard about it on the radio. NPR. I just had to come out and see it.' 'And,' she continued, pointing the pint container in her hand heavenward, 'why wouldn't I get myself some ice cream, too?' 'It's wonderful,' I said, and we stood right there, listening to the happy clatter from a nearby Italian restaurant and admiring the supermoon together. — Sarah Skinner Submit Your Metropolitan Diary Your story must be connected to New York City and no longer than 300 words. Buck Moon 2025: Orange orb shines over East Midlands

A supermoon put on a super display for the East Midlands night saw a Buck Moon rise - and photographers across the region were out to see Buck Moon gets its name because traditionally July is the time when a buck - or male deer - grows its full orange-hued lunar display peaked as darkness fell at about 21:40 BST. The Buck Moon, known as a Thunder Moon in the US, is a type of supermoon - which is when the Moon is closest to Earth and fully lit up in the night colour changes as it rises up through the night sky, changing its position to the viewer through the atmosphere.

Advertisement Conditions for viewing appear best in the western states, parts of Texas and the South, and also the Great Lakes. Widespread cloudiness may impact locations such as the Upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Even in cloudy spots, glimpses are often possible. Overall, summer viewing of the moon tends to be easier than other times of year. Clouds will often dissipate at night in the absence of daytime heating. Related : When it comes to nighttime sky gazing, giving your eyes 30 minutes to acclimate to dark conditions and seeking places with the least amount of light pollution will greatly enhance the experience, as will a way to stay comfortable. Of course, a full moon is bright enough that eye acclimation is unnecessary before giving it a long gander. And in the case of the moon, architecture or other structures can make for especially striking views. REUTERS About a day on each side of the full moon will still have the appearance of full to the naked eye. There's a little wiggle room if you miss peak illumination. A fun fact about this full moon is that its 'path mimics the sun's daytime path from six months ago, or in six months from now,' according to EarthSky. The January sun is as low rider on the horizon; a main reason for difficulty in warming up during the heart of winter. In similar fashion the July full moon stays low in the sky compared to other full moons across the year. Related : While the best time to view the moon is often considered to be shortly after it rises above the horizon or as it nears it during moonset, due to illusions making it appear closer and larger than it is, the low-riding nature of summer full moons prolongs the effect. It can also help add color to the moon as it is viewed through more atmosphere and haze low in the sky compared to when it is higher above our heads. The buck moon is the farthest full moon from the sun of the year, as our nearest star reached its distant point from Earth near the start of July. Beyond the full moon, other good reasons to look up this month include bright planets through July, like Venus and Saturn, plus the Southern Delta Aquariids late in the month. It's also a great time of year to spot the International Space Station sailing by.

UAE skies witness rare 'Strawberry Moon' for the first time in 18 years

As the sun sets on Wednesday, those with an interest in the sky in the UAE will have the opportunity to observe a rare and captivating sight: the Strawberry Moon, which is the final full moon of spring 2025. This lunar occurrence is of particular significance, as it has been confirmed that it will be clearly visible across the UAE. Of particular significance is the rarity of this configuration, as it is the final occurrence of this full moon at such a low angle in the sky until 2043. For those keen to observe this natural phenomenon, today, June 11, represents a unique opportunity. The moon will rise above the eastern horizon in the UAE skies today and will remain visible until sunrise the following day. Optimal vantage points for observing this phenomenon include deserts, beaches and elevated rooftops, as these locations are characterised by minimal light pollution. As the moon approaches the horizon, it will appear golden or orange due to the effect of atmospheric particles. The lunar circle will appear significantly larger than it actually is, an optical effect known as the moon illusion, rather than an actual change in size. The Strawberry Moon is a rare astronomical occurrence that combines the characteristics of a Strawberry Moon and a Supermoon, resulting in an exceptional spectacle. This will be observable in the UAE skies after sunset on 11 June 2025. This occurrence marks a significant milestone as it is the first in 18 years and will not be repeated until 2043. The term derives its name from its association with the strawberry harvest season among various Native American tribes, rather than from its actual colour. Depending on the cultural tradition under consideration, this phase is referred to by various names, including the "Rose Moon," "Napida Moon," or the "Green Corn Moon." This occurrence is synchronised with a phenomenon known as a lunar standstill, which materialises at intervals of 18.6 years and is characterised by the moon's unusually low position in the northern hemisphere's night sky. This occurrence marks the first instance since 2006 of a full moon appearing at such a low angle, and it is anticipated that this phenomenon will not reoccur for a period of 18 years. The precise timing of this celestial occurrence has been meticulously determined, with the Strawberry Moon projected to commence its appearance when it ascends above the eastern horizon at approximately 7:32 p.m. UAE time on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. The moon will remain visible throughout the night, providing an ideal opportunity for those interested in viewing and capturing it, especially in open areas away from light pollution.

Save $200 on Campfire Audio's IEMs that push the limits of what earbuds can do

Here's something you won't find on our list of the best earbuds but you may be interested in if you're deep into the music space or play music yourself. They're Campfire Audio's Supermoon IEMs. An IEM is a type of earbud (though some may argue it is its own, separate device) that sit directly in your ear canal (IEM stands for In-Ear Monitors) and provide a 'pure' sound free of post-processing. They're typically used for live audio feedback by musicians but are also appreciate by audiophiles for their extreme quality. Of course, with that great sound quality, they can be very expensive The Ultimate Ears Premier are $2,999, for example. But sometimes you can get a very expensive pair of IEMs at a discount. Right now the Campfire Audio Supermoon are marked down from $1,099 (they used to be $1,500) to $899, a savings of $200. These are premium IEM earbuds, no matter how you look at it and, if you're in the audiophile world, they're a possible pickup for you. Why you should buy the Campfire Audio Supermoon The Supermoon are 14mm planar magnetic IEMs that combine solid bass and technical details on the high-end of the spectrum. They have a wide 5Hz to 20kHz frequency response and produce less than 1% total harmonic distortion. They come in a cool shiny black or a color that I can't help but call, as a native of the state, a 'Tennessee' orange. In our large IEM shootout they were featured as an example of what the very top of the line of IEMs can get you — earbuds that fit perfectly in your ear because they were built for your very ear, an 'undeniably smooth and precise sound signature,' and a listening experience that gives noticeably more even at the hard to improve upon midtone level. The rub was that they were $1,500 at that time. Today, they're considerably more affordable. The Campfire Audio Supermoon are down to $899 for a limited time, $200 off of their usual price of $1,099. They aren't the usual fare around here, but they can bring something new to your music experience if you need something extra. If they aren't your style, however, you should check out Campfire Audio's new Axion earbuds that are also designed to provide a premium listening experience, though at a more universally approachable price.
