‘Buy local' momentum leads to business growth in Nova Scotia
Paul Hollingsworth has the story of a small Maritime business specializing in locally produced food reaping the benefits of the 'Buy Canada' movement. The owner of O'Bees Farm Market in Dartmouth, N.S. calls his business a made-in-the-Maritimes success story. 'I started out in 2009, and I started very small, with one table at the city market on Saturdays,' said Ian O'Brien. Sixteen years later, O'Brien's once small business has now grown into a permanent store, crammed with locally produced food, as his new, expanded store opened on Wednesday. According to O'Brien, when Donald Trump threatened tariffs and many Canadians turned their backs on U.S. made products, his business was perfectly positioned to offer customers what they wanted to buy. 'Ninety-nine per cent of the products that I have in my store are either from Nova Scotia or the Maritimes,' said O'Brien. 'It was easy to say, 'buy local', because we are local.' Shoppers like Pam Hayhurst agree. When the trade war ramped up, her shopping habits changed, and she said she is not alone. 'I definitely think there has been an awakening for that,' said Hayhurst. 'I know for myself, I like the idea of supporting local people, but knowing that everything that is going on with Trump, it is a way of helping the broader view. 'I know it's fresh and I know I am helping out the local farmers and I feel better about contributing to my community,' she added. The growth in the 'buy local' trend comes at a time when the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses has given Nova Scotia the highest score when it comes to removing internal trade barriers, which helps promote the sale of goods and services that are produced in Canada. 'I'm thrilled Nova Scotia is being recognized for making things better for businesses and workers,' said N.S. Premier Tim Houston in a news release. 'I hope it continues to encourage other provinces and territories to join us and make free trade a reality, nationwide.' Dartmouth business advocate Tim Rissesco believes the trend of supporting local businesses is just in its opening stages and he predicts more growth soon. 'People simply want to buy Canadian,' said Rissesco. 'People want to know where their food is coming from, people are looking for the quality and it is a source of national pride.' Which means business operators like Ian O'Brien can likely expect even more food sales and success, as the 'buy local' trend continues to gain momentum across Canada.

Made in Canada products: A complete guide to buying Canadian brands at the grocery store — food, drinks and more
After more than three months of navigating tariffs and subsequent price increases, many Canadians are still choosing to put their money behind home grown and manufactured goods. As tariff discussions continue to unfold between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump, a whopping 95 per cent of more than 9,900 Yahoo Canada readers who voted in a recent poll said that they want to buy Canadian products whenever possible, while only four per cent said the issue didn't concern them. 'I fully intend to buy Canadian and leave American products on the shelves. Most people I know, as well as my family members, are all insisting that they will continue to restrict their purchases to Canadian products even if Trump does not impose tariffs,' a Yahoo Canada reader said earlier this year via e-mail. 'The threat of the punitive tariffs is enough. I will never buy American." 'One option to push back on our American bullies is when we can't find a Canadian alternative, to buy Mexican in solidarity with our true allies — especially when it comes to our groceries," said another. "Failing that, [we can] buy anything other than American - we have lots of choices." "I was always conscientious about Canadian products but now I'm going to be laser-focused on it especially at the grocery store,' a Yahoo Canada reader said. Click here to jump right to our list of Canadian grocery brands By shopping Canadian products and brands, consumers in Canada are exempt from tariffs, which means potentially saving money. Plus, there's the added benefit of supporting Canadian manufacturers who may be impacted by the U.S. import tariffs. Some grocery stores have opted to label Canadian made products with a Canadian flag next to its price tag to help conscious shoppers. Here are some other ways to tell if a product is made in Canada: Look for a "Product of Canada" label This label means that approximately 98 per cent of ingredients, processing and labour used to produce the product areCanadian. According to the Government of Canada, products that claim to be "Canadian" are considered the same as "Product of Canada."Check for "Made in Canada" labels When products are labelled as "Made in Canada" it means that a majority of the product's last substantial transformation occurred in Canada. A substantial transformation of a product would include combining ingredients to create a new product. For example, ingredients like eggs, sugar and butter undergo a substantial transformation to produce cookies. A product can also have a "Made in Canada" label if a majority (at least 51 per cent) of the costs incurred in manufacturing or producing the goods were incurred in Canada even if some ingredients are from other countries. Some packages may include qualifiers to ensure that the consumer knows some ingredients were imported from other countries. Examples of qualifiers can include: Distilled in Canada Refined in Canada Packaged in Canada Processed in Canada Look for 100% claims All ingredients, processing and labour for the product (and all of its components) are from Canada. If you're someone choosing to shop consciously given the tariffs, we've gathered a helpful list of Canadian brands and those manufactured in Canada to help you on your next grocery shop. Baltimore Farmer's Market vendors find support, personal connections from customers
More than 160 vendors gather each week at the Baltimore Farmer's Market under the underpass at Jones Falls Expressway to offer homemade and homegrown products. Local produce, pastries, crafts, and other products are sold from 7 a.m. until noon each Sunday from April through December. "We're going to have corn next week, and then we'll be getting into tomatoes and watermelons and cantaloupes, and everything will be full swing," said Stave Knopp, owner of Knopp's Farm on the Shore. Personal connections at the Farmer's Market Knopp will tell you farming isn't just a job to him, but rather his crops are rooted in tradition. "This isn't just like a business or not just a market, this is like family," Knopp said. "I've been coming here since I was two. This isn't just any old regular day, this is family." Knopp's parents sold produce at the Baltimore Farmer's Market before he was born, so he grew up pulling a wagon up and down the aisles. Now, he runs the stand himself. "I know a lot of the customers, I've known their grandparents, now I'm meeting their children," Knopp said. "I'm meeting their grandchildren. I'm telling my age now, but it's really awesome, it's very special." Those personal connections with shoppers keep them coming back. "We really just try to support the local folks who live here as much as we can. If we're not going to, who is?" said customer Jason Ward. Supporting local businesses Delaney Cate, the farmer's market's manager, told WJZ she enjoys watching Marylanders support each other through the Baltimore Farmer's Market. "You get to kind of see the city and the area wake up in a way," Cate said. "It's a great idea to keep money in the community. If you're shopping local, you've also got folks that live here that are being hired to vend." Vendors say what you get at the Baltimore Farmer's Market is not just a vegetable off a shelf, it's also an interpersonal experience. "When you come here, you're talking to the farmer, you're talking to me," Knopp said. "It's know your farmer, know your food."

Kitchener launches Love Local online pop-up shop
On Wednesday, Kitchener launched the Love Local Pop-up Shop in partnership with local business Civilian Screen Printing. The move is part of the city's plan to minimize the impact tariffs have on the local community and economy. Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic told CBC K-W's John Dalusong how the initiative was a response to requests from community members who wanted to show love and support for the City of Kitchener.
