Police shut down planned ride on illegal electric motorcycles in San Diego County
(FOX 5/KUSI) — A planned ride through North County on potentially illegal two-wheeled vehicles was shut down by police this Wednesday. In a post on Facebook, Carlsbad Police said that its officers, as well as officers from Oceanside Police, stopped the planned rideout between the two cities before it began. Pictures shared by the agency show officers speaking with several of the riders alongside the vehicles. Carlsbad police said officers addressed several violations involving the e-motorcycles and 'Surrons.' Illegal gambling den busted in San Diego Sur-Ron is a brand that makes, what it calls, 'electric bikes,' but that appear more like a dirt bike. Police said that these vehicles, which can sometimes go faster than the legal maximum speed of 20 mph for a standard e-bike, are illegal if they are unregistered, and that a license is necessary to ride them. ‘Erratic' e-dirt bike riders trigger warning from North Vancouver RCMP

Mounties in North Vancouver say they've seen a 'noticeable' increase in the number of electric dirt bikes being operated on city streets over the past few months. The detachment issued a warning Thursday, reminding residents that these bikes – like their gas-powered counterparts – are only permitted off-road, and should not be ridden on city streets or sidewalks or in designated bike lanes. 'The North Vancouver RCMP has seen a sharp rise in reports of dangerous and erratic behaviours from riders of these bikes,' a statement from police said, adding that the Sur-Ron and Talaria brand bikes are among the most commonly spotted. 'In most cases, it's unsuspecting parents who purchase these bikes for their kids, believing they are legal for road use – but in fact, they are illegal.' E-bikes have a maximum speed of 32 km/h and a maximum power of 500 watts, the RCMP said, while e-dirt bikes can go up to 110 km/h and have power up to 22,000 watts. Another important distinction is that e-bikes must have pedals, which are usually not present on e-dirt bikes, according to police. Fines for operating an e-dirt bike illegally can include a $598 penalty for driving without insurance and a $368 ding for driving without due care and attention. Drivers can also rack up demerit points. Criminal charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle are also possible, police warned. 'We are taking this opportunity to educate parents on the use of E-dirt bikes so that fines and injuries can be avoided,' the statement from the RCMP said. 'The North Vancouver RCMP will continue targeting unsafe motorists and cyclists through increased traffic enforcement and initiatives aimed at reducing risks and keeping the community safe.'

Huyton electric bike crash: Arrest after man critically injured
Police have arrested a man after a cyclist was critically injured in a crash with an electric bike.A pedal cyclist in his 40s was taken to hospital with a potentially life-threatening head injury after a collision with a man on a Sur-Ron electric bike in Princess Drive, Huyton, at about 18:30 BST on Monday, Merseyside Police man on the electric bike rode off towards Liverpool Road while the victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.A 29-year-old man from Huyton has been detained on suspicion of wounding with intent, driving a vehicle dangerously and failing to stop after a road accident. Det Insp Steve Byrom said: "Although a man has been arrested in connection with the collision, our enquiries continue and we would urge anyone who has information about the incident, who we haven't already spoken to, to please contact us as it may prove vital to the investigation."He said officers were "working hard to disrupt and arrest offenders involved in the illegal and anti-social use of electric bikes".Electrically-assisted pedal cycles (EAPC) can be legally ridden by people aged 14 or over but not on bikes that do not meet the EAPC rules are classed as a motorcycle or moped with users having to meet certain legal requirements.
