Delhi: Days after man dies of electrocution, his wife and cousin arrested for murder

Days after a 36-year-old man allegedly died of 'accidental electrocution' at his home in Dwarka, his wife and cousin were arrested on Saturday, with the police suspecting that the two drugged the victim and killed him. The police identified the accused as Sushmita Dev (35) and Rahul Dev (24), who were arrested after they were picked up for questioning by the police. The Mata Rooprani Maggo Hospital in Uttam Nagar had informed the police on July 13 that one Karan Dev had reportedly died from electrocution. On July 16, the deceased's brother, Kunal, approached the police allegedly with concerns about the role of Karan's wife and his cousin in the death, said police. Acting on his statement, a preliminary inquiry was launched. 'While we were waiting for the postmortem report, the victim's brother discovered some chats, which contained serious incriminating content. The brother informed the police and a written complaint was filed. On the basis of the complaint, we registered a case on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy,' Dwarka DCP Ankit Singh said. The police said the purported chats allegedly contained messages shared between Sushmita and Rahul, planning the murder in detail. 'On the night of July 12, Sushmita allegedly laced her husband's food with sleeping pills and called Rahul over. The two then cut an extension wire to reveal the naked wire and wrapped it around his hand, killing him. Once they were sure he was dead, Sushmita pretended to break the news to the family in a panic,' said an officer. According to the police, Sushmita and Karan had been married for several years before she began a relationship with Rahul. 'The two killed Karan and passed it off as an accidental death,' said an officer. The police said the motive behind the murder could have been to get Karan out of their way or for financial gain. Karan was declared brought dead at the hospital, as per the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) report. At that time, no allegations were raised by family members, who did not wish to go ahead with the postmortem. However, taking into account the age of the deceased and to rule out any unnatural circumstances, a postmortem examination was conducted, the DCP had said earlier.

Instagram chats between wife, her lover reveal details of murder plot

New Delhi: While investigating the murder of a 36-year-old man in southwest Delhi's Dwarka, police claimed to have stumbled upon Instagram chats between his wife and her lover that implicated them in the killing. The woman Sushmita, 35, is alleged to be having an affair with a relative named Rahul, 24, and planned the killing of her husband, Karan Dev. They drugged Dev by giving him sleeping pills before electrocuting him to death on July 13, an investigator disclosed on Saturday. The probe revealed that the duo gave Dev 15 sleeping pills at dinner. The chats showed that they had Googled about the time it would take for the sleeping pills to cause death. "Check once how long it takes to die after taking the medicine. It's been three hours since he ate food. No vomiting. And no death yet either," says one chat from Sushmita to Rahul, who replies, "If you can't figure anything out, give him a shock." ‘Give him shock': Instagram chat uncovers murder of Delhi man by wife and her lover

What was thought to be an accidental electrocution in Delhi's Uttam Nagar has turned out to be a murder, uncovered through an Instagram chat between the victim's wife and his cousin. The murder of Karan Dev in Delhi's Janakpuri was planned by his wife and cousin, uncovered through their Instagram chat.(Representational image/HT ) The two, who were allegedly in a relationship, have been arrested for plotting and executing the killing of 36-year-old Karan Dev, NDTV reported, quoting police. The incident took place on the morning of July 13, when Karan was brought dead to a hospital in West Delhi's Janakpuri. His wife, Sushmita, claimed he had suffered an electric shock at home. The family, believing it to be a natural death, initially declined a post-mortem. However, given the victim's young age and suspicious circumstances, police insisted on an autopsy and sent the body to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. The case took a sharp turn three days later, on July 16, when Karan's younger brother, Kunal Dev, discovered an incriminating Instagram chat between Sushmita and Rahul, Karan's paternal cousin. He recorded the conversation and handed it over to the police, who then registered a murder case. According to the chat, the two had planned to kill Karan by sedating him and then electrocuting him to make the death look like an accident. The messages revealed that 15 sleeping pills had been mixed into Karan's food on the night of July 12, the report added. The Instagram chat, as reported by NDTV, captures the chilling exchange between the accused. However, has not independently verified the contents of the conversation. Growing anxious when the pills didn't seem to work, Sushmita messaged Rahul: 'Check once how long it does it takes to die after taking the medicine. It's been three hours since he ate food. No vomiting, no potty, nothing. And no death yet either. Then what should we do, suggest something.' To this, Rahul replied: 'If you can't figure anything out, give him a shock.' Sushmita then asked: 'How to tie him up for the shock?' Rahul responded: 'With tape.' As the situation dragged on, she updated him: 'He's breathing very slowly.' Rahul told her: 'Give him all the medicine you have.' Sushmita, struggling to administer more pills, wrote: 'I can't get his mouth open. I can pour water in, but I can't give the medicine. You come here, maybe together we can manage to feed it to him.' Accused gave shock to fake electrocution: Police According to the NDTV report, which cites police, the accused planned to make Karan's death look like a household accident by electrocuting him after sedating him. When the sleeping pills failed to render him unconscious quickly, they allegedly applied an electric current to his finger while he was still under sedation, intending to pass off the incident as accidental electrocution. After the act, Sushmita reportedly went to her in-laws' home nearby and told them that Karan had suffered an electric shock. The family rushed back to the flat and took him to the hospital, where he was declared dead, the report added.

Delhi: Wife sedates husband with sleeping pills, lover electrocutes him to death

New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) A woman and her lover were arrested for allegedly killing her husband in Delhi's Dwarka, an official said on Saturday. The incident came to light on July 13, when a call was made to the PCR from the Mata Rooprani Maggo Hospital in Uttam Nagar, reporting the death of Karan Dev (36). Karan and his wife, Sushmita, have a six-year-old son, the official added. Sushmita and her alleged lover Rahul Dev (24), who is the son of Karan's uncle, were arrested, a senior police officer said, adding that a relative found chats between the two on a social media platform planning to kill Karan. Karan had slapped Sushmita on the festival of Karwachauth, which added to her emotional distress, police sources stated. According to a preliminary investigation, Sushmita first allegedly drugged Karan by giving him sleeping pills, following which Rahul electrocuted him using the wire of an extension board, the officer added. Sushmita allegedly mixed over 10 sleeping pills in Karan's food on the night of July 12, after which Rahul came to their residence in the morning and electrocuted him, he added. Subsequently, Sushmita rushed to her in-laws' house nearby, telling them that Karan had collapsed, which prompted them to take him to the hospital. He was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state and declared dead with the medico-legal case (MLC) citing electrocution as the cause of death, sources said. 'Initially, the deceased's family did not raise any allegations and even wished to waive the post-mortem examination. However, considering Karan's relatively young age and to rule out any foul play, the post-mortem was conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said. On July 16, Karan's younger brother, Kunal Dev, approached the police, expressing suspicions about the circumstances of his brother's death. Kunal discovered messages between Sushmita and her lover, in which they allegedly planned to kill Karan by administering sleeping pills and electrocuting him. A case under Sections 103 (punishment for murder) and 61 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
