Channel 5 has confirmed a new detective mystery series , is in the works, with Downton Abbey star Robert James-Collier set to take on the lead role A fresh detective mystery series has been commissioned by Channel 5, with a beloved Downton Abbey favourite confirmed to headline the upcoming drama. The exciting news, revealed on July 21, forms part of the broadcaster 's ambitious strategy to develop original programming whilst bringing back established favourites, as the network expands its drama portfolio. Compelling crime dramas and fresh mysteries feature prominently in the channel's forthcoming slate, with Cooper and Fry among the newly announced projects. Spanning four feature-length episodes, the series draws inspiration from Stephen Booth's bestselling literary works. Four early novels are being brought to screen: Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind To the Bones and Dancing with the Virgins, reports the Express. Robert James-Collier, recognised for his roles in Downton Abbey and The Inheritance, will star alongside Mandip Gill, celebrated for her appearances in Doctor Who and Suspicion, in the leading roles. Located in the stunning Peak District, the drama follows Ben and Diane as they develop a "unique friendship" with their personal circumstances becoming increasingly entangled, though the journey "won't always be easy". Clapperboard produces the series in partnership with STUDIO TF1, who also handle distribution, following a commission from Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor at Channel 5. Audiences will instantly recognise Robert James-Collier from his roles as the scheming Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey, the charming Liam Connor in Coronation Street, and the dedicated Martin Evershed in Ackley Bridge. On the other hand, Mandip Gill is celebrated for her portrayal of Phoebe McQueen in Hollyoaks, the adventurous Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who, and the intriguing Sonia Chopra in Suspicion. Discussing Channel 5's exciting new ventures, Sebastian Cardwell, Deputy Chief Content Officer and Head of Scripted at Paramount UK, commented: "We're incredibly proud to unveil this new slate of scripted commissions, which showcases the breadth and ambition of 5's storytelling. From brand new thrillers and character-driven mysteries to the much-anticipated return of audience favourites, we're continuing to build a rich and distinctive drama offering." He added: "These titles reflect our commitment to delivering compelling, accessible British drama that resonates with viewers across the UK. We look forward to announcing further titles in the coming months." Channel 5 has yet to announce a release date for Cooper and Fry

Channel 4 The Couple Next Door Series 2: Full cast list
The first season focused on a couple moving onto a new street and getting involved in a messy multi-person romance, which spiralled out of control. Series 2 will focus on Annabel Scholey's Charlotte, a heart surgeon, and her husband Jacob (Sam Palladio), a consultant anaesthetist. From the outside looking in, they appear to be the perfect couple, but the arrival of mysterious new nurse Mia (Aggy K Adams) and the return of Charlotte's old flame Leo (Sendhil Ramamurthy) turns everything on its head. "But it's not long before Mia's past comes back to haunt her, leading Charlotte and Jacob to question who she really is, especially when patients at the hospital start mysteriously dying. "One thing is clear - giving in to their desires could have deadly consequences." Hugh Dennis is notably the only actor from the first series to return, having played creepy neighbour Alan. Annabel Scholey and Sam Palladio share some details on the steamy new series of The Couple Next Door 🔥 in the latest issue of the Radio Times Discussing what's to come, writer David Allison shared: "The first series was about two couples that collided with each other – a square. The Summer Hikaru Died – Season 1 Episode 2 Recap & Review
Suspicion The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 2 lands us on a country road where police cars zip by Hikaru and Yoshiki on their bikes. On another road, Tanaka is heading toward their town. At school, the kids are talking about the old woman who died and the amount of spooky stuff going on. One friend asks Yoshiki to walk him home through some scary bit of woods. He declines but Hikaru and some others want to join so now everyone is going. Even though it does look spooky, they arrive without incident. Elsewhere, Tanaka reaches his destination but he's not taking it seriously enough for the men who are worried about people dying. The old lady who died had been scared of something in the mountains ever since her daughter died. But her worry may have increased its attraction toward her. On the way back, Yoshiki sees something in the woods coming toward them. Hikaru notices it's following Yoshiki – that's not good. READ MORE: Anime reviews The men have moved to a safer spot at a shrine. Tanaka takes out a bag that Hikaru may have taken up the mountain the day he disappeared – they find a wooden head inside, meant to ward off evil spirits. But Tanaka thinks the evil thing has already come from the mountain to hide in the village. Returning from the woods, the girls run off, scared of something creepy but Yoshiki takes care of Hikaru, who's fallen and gotten a nosebleed. He'd managed to eat the thing trying to latch onto Yoshiki. Hikaru reminds him not to look at creepy things, just keep his eyes on him instead. To himself, Hikaru thinks he doesn't need to take Yoshiki, as he'll follow – and Yoshiki won't let anything steal him away. Flashback to a story Hikaru's dad told him about an agreement with an Unuki-sama to not attack their family. So, if Hikaru likes someone, he should marry her right away, as Unuki-sama takes people close to them instead. Back at school, Yoshiki is curious about how Hikaru 'ate' the thing in the woods. Hikaru unbuttons his shirt to show a slit down his chest, inviting Yoshiki to stick his hand inside. As he encourages him to reach further, Hikaru feels Yoshiki's warmth – it's like nothing he's ever felt before. But Yoshiki jumps away when something inside Hikaru pulls him. Heading home, Yoshiki can't stop thinking about what Hikaru's insides felt like. A woman approaches him, telling him he's getting too close to something dangerous; otherwise, he'll get 'mixed' with it. She'd been feeling a horrible wind coming from the mountain, but now it's gone, so she's been worried about where it landed. She warns Yoshiki against whatever is attaching itself to him and gives him her number if he wants to talk. That night, Yoshiki struggles to turn off his thoughts. The Episode Review Ok, so maybe the new Hikaru isn't so harmless or innocent. His snickering little laugh is a bit creepy, in fact. I wonder if Yoshiki can believe his words. Do we? He seems a lot more confident than in the previous episode, so maybe he's getting comfortable with 'being' Hikaru and confident that he's got Yoshiki where he wants him. To clarify, Unuki-sama (or Nonuki-sama) is a deity associated with the mountain. In ancient times, people were sacrificed to appease the gods. From the story his father told, it sounds like Hikaru's ancestors looked after the monster, even going so far as to make a deal with it to protect their family. The suspense of this storyline is spot on, tempting us to where no one wants to go. What do you think? Wishing they conveniently dropped the episodes in more bingeable pairs? 'Outstanding thriller' with Hollywood legend launches on free UK streamer
Is there anything better than a gripping thriller that takes your breath away at every suspenseful turn? In the world of television, I'm not sure there is. And that's probably what executives at ITV are thinking as well after their decision to add Apple TV Plus series Suspicion to their roster. Starring Pulp Fiction icon Uma Thurman, the eight-part series depicts five ordinary Brits who are accused of kidnapping the son of a prominent US media mogul. As twists and turns are revealed throughout, the five embark on a desperate race against time in order to prove their innocence. First released back in 2022, Suspicion has stayed fairly under the radar. But now, as ITV get set to air the first episode tonight at 10pm, fans can expect to stay guessing right until the very end with this show's dramatic plot twists. Writing on Rotten Tomatoes, Joly Herman from Common Sense Media said the series is: 'Dark, driving, and addictive, this thriller casts a keen eye on modern-day surveillance and social media.' Brad Newsome, from the Sydney Morning Herald, wrote: 'The pace remains quick but the action remains coherent… Quickly engrossing.' In a Google review, viewer David Samuel said: 'Brilliant series. Yes it's complicated at times, but that's the point, it's meant to be. It's a nice change not to be spoon-fed the plot but actually have to use your brain.' Ric Souza, also writing on Google, added: 'This was an outstanding suspense thriller with a superb cast. If you like your stories simple, with a tidy ending, Suspicion may not be for you. 'It is a master mystery thriller that leaves you with several final Suspicions as to who the true mastermind(s) are.' However, it appears not all fans were as pleased with the direction the show took. In fact, many have expressed their disappointment in how it tailed off towards the end of the season. Writing on Google reviews, Gillian Salmon said: 'Pros are this is well paced, suspenseful and initially seemed to build up to a solid thriller. 'The cast play their roles well, even the blissfully naïve and annoying ones. But the moments of promise fail to launch to a believable and satisfying conclusion.' More Trending Seth, also writing on Google, said: 'The setup in the first couple of episodes was intriguing and got me hooked. Unfortunately, it takes a steep decline and by the time we get to the last episode, it's turned into complete garbage.' Meanwhile, another critic on Rotten Tomatoes, Dustin Rowles, said: 'There's not enough substance or character development here to hold our attention beyond the time it takes to click 'NEXT'.' This article was originally published on May 22. View More » The first episode of Suspicion will be available to watch tonight at 10pm on ITV. Got a story? ITV Suspicion: Full cast list and when it will be on TV
It follows an American media mogul (played by Thurman) whose son is kidnapped and the ensuing cat-and-mouse game to find out what's happened. The series was originally released on Apple TV+ back in 2022, but ITV has acquired it to show on terrestrial TV. The official synopsis for Suspicion reads: "When the son of a prominent American businesswoman (Thurman) is kidnapped from a New York hotel, the eye of suspicion quickly falls on four seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question. "As they find themselves in a trans-Atlantic cat and mouse race to evade the combined forces of the National Crime Agency and the FBI to prove their innocence, it becomes apparent that not everyone can be trusted. "Who is really behind the mysterious abduction, and who is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?" The Radio Times adds: "However, it is worth noting that the series was cancelled after its premiere season, so those looking for more may have to manage their expectations."
