Police statement released after residents evacuated for 'unexploded munitions'
Police have confirmed the reason a Newhaven road has been closed and residents evacuated. This afternoon (July 24), a police cordon was put in place on Newfield Road in Newhaven. Residents living in homes on the street were also evacuated. Police have since confirmed that the evacuation is a precautionary measure, due to reports of a 'unexploded munitions' in a property. Police at the scene this afternoon (Image: Sussex News and Pictures) A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: 'Police are currently responding to Newfield Road, Newhaven, following reports of unexploded munitions discovered inside a property. 'As a precaution, officers have established a 50-metre cordon around the area. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called in to assess the items. 'Officers are continuing to engage with local residents and are advising those in surrounding properties to leave their homes while emergency services work to safely resolve the matter.' Residents evacuated from their homes (Image: Sussex News and Pictures) Residents have been seen surrounding the cordon, some sat on chairs watching the officer's work. A resident from Newfield Road told The Argus that she had been evacuated from her home and had no idea when she would be able to return. Another said that police are not letting residents "anywhere near the road", with houses on both Newfield Road and Rose Walk having been evacuated. The road remains closed as police work to resolve the incident.

Food festival to return this weekend
A food festival will return this weekend. The event will take place on June 6 to 8 in Worthing's Steyne Gardens. A variety of independent artisan bakers, street food vendors, craft brewers, and wineries will showcase their wares at the event. Admission to the festival is free, with a wide array of street food stalls, bars, craft vendors, and grocery products available for visitors to enjoy. There will be world street food, outdoor dining areas, live music, and a children's theatre. (Image: Sussex News and Pictures) There will also be the new addition of a stand-up comedy night called Worthing Live on Saturday, June 7, from 8pm to 10pm. The comedy night is ticketed and is only for people aged 18 and over - tickets for the comedy event can be bought online beforehand. Performers include MC Geordie Geoff, Keefy Jewell, Lateef Lovejoy and Sean Gorman.

Police release statement after girl is hit by bus in city centre
A teenage girl remains in hospital after being hit by a bus in the city centre. Western Road in Brighton was closed yesterday, May 26, after the 16-year-old girl was seriously injured at around 3.40pm. She was taken to hospital where she remains today, May 27. Pictures from the scene show a cordon in place as emergency services dealt with the incident yesterday. The road has since been reopened. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: 'An investigation is underway and anyone who saw what happened or captured any mobile, dash cam or CCTV footage is asked to email quoting Operation Sunstone.'

Pride organisers continue to appeal for support to save parade
A pride event is continuing to ask for support as its parade is at risk of being cancelled. Worthing Pride announced last week that its parade was at 'serious risk of being cancelled' due to a lack of sponsorship. Organisers of the event said more than 35 businesses and 500 people were involved in the parade last year and as of April 25, only six businesses had applied. Posts on the event's social media page previously called for support from Worthing West MP Beccy Cooper and Worthing Business Improvement District (Bid). Pride director Gary Richardson said people are now beginning to engage although donations to the Go Fund Me as well as event sponsorship packages are still needed. Tickets can be purchased on the Worthing Pride website. Mr Richardson also asked that 'members of the business community that benefit from the increased footfall to the town over pride weekend' make a 'donation of profits' to the event's Go Fund Me. He added that a percentage of ticket sales from 'pride events' could be donated towards funds. Headliners for the festival include Jo O'Meara from S Club and Natasha Hamilton from Atomic Kitten fame. Drag performers include Elektra Fence from RuPaul's Drag Race UK. Ms Cooper said: 'Pride is an extremely important event for our town and one which I have always enjoyed taking part in. 'As with all partnership requests, we assess these on a case-by-case basis in line with our diversity and inclusion policy and organisation objectives. 'While recent communication has been challenging, we remain open to constructive dialogue and have invited the organisers to meet with us, as yet, this has not been accepted. 'That invitation still stands.'

Pictures show a cordon outside a police station after unexploded munitions were handed in. Sussex Police reported that suspected unexploded Second World War munitions were handed in to the police station in Chatsworth Road, Worthing, at around 2pm today, April 11. A police cordon was set up and buildings were evacuated as a precaution. Pictures show officers stood outside the building with emergency service vehicles at the scene. "The explosive ordnance disposal team attended, and the items have been safely removed. "The cordon and road closure has now been stood down, officers have thanked the public for their patience while this incident was dealt with."
