"Boundary of Kolkata airport should be sealed immediately": Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 26 (ANI): The leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari called for the immediate sealing of the boundary at Kolkata airport. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said that the current situation at the airport poses a major security risk. 'What is happening at Kolkata Airport is a matter of great concern from a security perspective. Prayers are being performed on the ground. The boundary of Kolkata Airport is not being sealed,' he said. He expressed worry over the movement of outsiders in and around the airport premises. 'People from outside are coming and going, and there is also connectivity to China and Bangladesh from here. We have demanded that the boundary (of Kolkata Airport) be sealed,' Adhikari said. Adhikari also highlighted that two newly developed runways have still not been made operational despite being completed with central government funding. 'The two new runways for which the central government allocated a budget, and whose work has also been completed, have not been made operational. Only a single runway is functional,' he said. He attributed the delay in operating the new runway to an issue involving a religious structure. 'The reason given is the relocation of the Mosque to the secondary runway. This cannot go on,' Adhikari remarked. Calling for urgent action, he said, 'The boundary wall should be closed immediately. The boundary of such a sensitive international airport should be sealed immediately.' Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, 'NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this.' The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. (ANI)

Kolkata college gangrape case: BJP, TMC trade barbs, accuse each other of shielding 'rapists'
Two days after a college student in Kolkata was allegedly raped by her two seniors and a former student of the educational institute, ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition Bharatiya Janata Party trade barbs of words on Friday. With the Bharatiya Janata Party hitting out at the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led state government for failing to protect women in the state, TMC alleged that in BJP-ruled states, accused are shielded and sheltered. The TMC also mentioned that despite the West Bengal government bringing Aparajita Bill, the Bill lies ignored by the BJP-led Central Government. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari took to X and wrote, 'The empire of crime wasn't established just like that; it has grown and swelled in the company of various miscreants!!!' To this, TMC wrote on X, "While @BJP4India leaves NO STONE UNTURNED to SHIELD RAPISTS, AITC has consistently stood firm - condemning such heinous crimes, taking swift action, and demanding the strictest punishment. Lauded by all, the Aparajita Bill was introduced as a crucial step to ensure a stronger legal framework for women. But today, the Bill lies ignored, gathering dust with the BJP-led Central Government. BJP does not punish rapists, they protect them. No wonder @DrSukantaBJP sees no value in the Aparajita Bill, 2024 because creating a safe environment for women is NEVER a priority." TMC also stated that Kartik Maharaj – accused of repeatedly raping a woman inside a school building in Murshidabad – was recently awarded the Padma Shri on special recommendation of PM Modi's government. While addressing the media, West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja said, '...There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. You have to condemn the incident. You are now trying to show photographs... Trinamool Congress Student wing is not teaching the students to rape... The police took immediate action, and within 12 hours of the complaint, three people were caught. They are in custody, and the investigation is on. Their mobile phones have been seized, and the victim's statement has been taken. She has named the accused... It has been taken seriously... The BJP cannot even think the way Kolkata police swung into action... They started malign... If they want to be in Bengal as a responsible Opposition, then they have to behave responsibly...' Earlier, a law student was allegedly raped inside a South Calcutta Law College in West Bengal's Kolkata between 7.30 pm and 8.50 pm on June 25. The Kolkata Police have arrested three accused named – Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. According to the victim, the incident took place on the evening of June 25 when the woman went to the college. She was reportedly taken by the three accused to a room inside the educational institute and gang-raped, the police said. During the probe, it was found out that the accused recorded the assault on a mobile phone and threatened to upload the footage online if she spoke to anyone about the incident, news agency PTI reported, citing a police source. 'She has alleged that the three accused had kept the mobile footage of the assault and threatened to release it on the internet if she talked to anybody about the incident,' the police source told PTI. Police added that the mobile phones of the three accused have been seized and sent for forensic analysis. Meanwhile, all three accused were presented before the additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Alipore, which sent them to police custody till July 1.

Campus rape reignites political debate
Kolkata: Yet another incident of rape, 10 months after the brutal rape and murder of a PGT doctor at RG Kar, reignited the war of words between Trinamool Congress and opposition parties on Friday. "This incident is not just a crime, it is a glaring proof of Trinamool Congress's student organisation netas tarnishing the sanctity of educational institutions. A college campus, a sacred place where students come to acquire knowledge, witnessing such brutality is shameful for our society. Trinamool's student netas have repeatedly misused their power to create an atmosphere of fear and anarchy in educational institutes," said BJP 's Suvendu Adhikari. CPM's Sujan Chakraborty, while leading a rally outside Kasba police station, took a dig at main accused Monojit Mishra's association with TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He said, "To make the campuses — from RG Kar to this law college — free of crime, they must be freed from grassroots influences. Illegal unions must be shut down. Student union polls need to be organised." "How can such incidents happen again and again?" asked Sougata Tarafdar, secretary of SFI district committee of Jadavpur University. "When such incidents happen, there is inevitably a sense of fear and apprehension among parents." A group of demonstrators even scaled the law college gate and tore down posters of CM Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee on the campus. Meanwhile, outside Kasba PS, Left supporters clashed with cops, forcing deployment of RAF. There was a massive traffic jam on Rasbehari Avenue connector from afternoon till evening because of the protests. A commuter stuck in traffic near Bijan Setu said, "We have been stuck for past 15-20 minutes. We were on our way to the hospital and are now stuck." Piya, who was travelling by bus to her officer near Gariahat, said, "I am very late for my work. I cannot simply sit and wait in the bus." Trinamool functionaries termed the incident "heinous" and said they were "pained". They also lauded the cop effort for arresting the culprits within 12 hours of the incident being reported. "We are standing with the survivor. There are no words to condemn such a heinous crime, but we want to tell her that those who committed this barbarity were arrested immediately. A probe is underway. We want the woman to receive justice. There will be a thorough probe and the culprits will receive the strictest punishment," said minister Sashi Panja. Urging the opposition not to do politics over such a tragic incident, Panja asked why the Aparajita Bill that got passed in the WB legislative assembly was yet to be approved by the Centre. "BJP wants to politicise such matters. If they are really serious about such heinous crimes, instead of resorting to theatrics on the streets, express your support for the Bill. Ask the President to pass it. A woman's body is not your political battlefield," she said.

Three held on charges of raping woman inside law college in South Kolkata
Kolkata: Kolkata Police arrested three youths for raping a young woman within the premises of a reputed law college in the city, police said on Friday. The victim and two of the accused are all students of the South Kolkata Law College (New Campus), while the third accused is a former student. Insiders from the city police said that one of the three men was arrested late on Thursday evening, while the other two were held in the wee hours of Friday. All will be presented at a city court in South Kolkata on Friday afternoon and the public prosecutor will seek their police custody. City police insiders further said that the cops started an investigation in the matter based on a complaint filed by the victim at Kasba Police Station in South Kolkata on the night of June 25. In her complaint, she stated that she was sexually assault in the common room of the law college that is also located at Kasba on the same evening between 7 P.M. and 9 P.M. In her complaint, she also named the three accused persons. City police insiders said that immediately after her complaint was registered she was taken for medical examination to the state-run National Medical College & Hospital in central Kolkata. After the medical examinations confirmed the authenticity of her complaint, the cops of Kasba Police station sprang into action and arrested the three accused persons one after another. The cops are already getting the confidential statement of the victim recorded in front of a Judicial Magistrate. The Investigating Officers have procured the footage of the CCTV cameras installed within the law college premises including the one at the scene of the crime. The police have also started the process of recording the statements of the faculty, students and security personnel of the law college. The event has once again raised questions on women's safety in the city and that, too, within the premises of educational institutions. 'The law and order situation in Kolkata as well as the entire state has collapsed. Now Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will float theories like 'love affair' or describe the event as a 'minor incident.' Next, she will announce compensation. The Chief Minister has no right to remain in her chair for a single minute. This is a major event and we will see it through to the end,' said Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari. At the time of filing of the report there was no reaction from any Trinamool Congress leader including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is currently at Digha in the East Midnapore district of West Bengal to participate in the Ratha Yatra program of the Lord Jagannath Temple there.
