Indian curry in cafeteria spicing up Suzuki Motor's business

Suzuki Motor Corp, the longtime top carmaker in the Indian market, has launched sales of boil-in-the-bag curry, initially developed for Indian employees in Japan who longed for the taste of home. The Japanese automaker began selling four different varieties of Indian curry online on June 25 -- daikon radish sambar, tomato lentil, chickpea masala and moong dal green -- for 918 yen each, after months of tasting tests. The dishes were added to the menu at the head office's cafeteria with other Indian curries in January 2024 for vegetarian employees from India. The number of Indian employees, both short- and long-term, at its headquarters in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, has been steadily growing, the company said. Suzuki offered Japanese-style curry at the cafeteria but not Indian vegetarian curry until the new menu was introduced. The maker of motorcycles and small cars asked Torizen Co, a local bridal and restaurant business, to cooperate in developing the boil-in-the-bag versions of the four flavors. The packaging was designed by the company's vehicle designers based on its Swift hatchbacks and Jimny compact SUVs, known as the Samurai in some markets, and the Hayabusa and V-Strom1050DE motorcycle models. © KYODO

Suzuki Jimny Nomad (5-Door) Races Past Mercedes-Benz In Japan, But There's A Catch

The Suzuki Jimny is a product of great folklore, ever since its inception. The 4x4 off-roader is celebrated across the world for its off-roading prowess. Thanks to its cult following, it helped the Suzuki Motor Corp to become the top car importer in the country, beating Japan, in June. Interestingly, the Jimny Nomade (5-Door) had the highest demand, with Suzuki importing 4,780 units of the India-built compact SUV to Japan, posting a 230-fold YoY increase, reports Bloomberg. Interestingly, Suzuki managed to overtake Mercedes-Benz's import figures in Japan. Suzuki halts production of Swift over China's rare earth export curbs

Suzuki Motor Corp has halted production of its flagship Swift compact hatchback due to China's export restrictions on rare-earth elements, sources close to the matter said, marking the first suspension by a Japanese automaker tied to the curbs. The restrictions have caused delays in procuring parts that use rare earths, the sources said. The Chinese government in April imposed export controls on seven types of rare-earth minerals as part of its retaliation against U.S. tariffs. The move has already begun to disrupt production in the United States and Europe. Suzuki suspended production of the Swift, excluding the Sport model, at its Sagara plant in Shizuoka Prefecture, on May 26. While it announced that it would partially resume production from June 13 and fully resume from June 16, it did not disclose the reason for the halt. © KYODO

Japan enters top five export markets for India-made cars

NEW DELHI: Japan has become one of the top five destinations for Indian car exports for the first time in FY25, signaling growing global demand for vehicles manufactured in India, even from advanced markets. Major Indian exporters like Suzuki Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co's local units are increasingly using India as a global production base. According to commerce ministry data compiled by SIAM, car exports to Japan jumped to $616.45 million in the first nine months of FY25, up from $220.62 million in all of FY24. Although official data for the March quarter is still awaited, industry sources expect exports to Japan to grow further, especially after Maruti Suzuki began shipping its Jimny SUV to the country in January. "Over decades, we have built a base in quality, cost, efficiency and technology in car manufacturing. This has given us volumes and economies of scale," senior executive officer at Maruti Suzuki India, Rahul Bharti told the Economic Times. He further noted that the company plans to export large number of e Vitara electric SUVs, produced in India, to European markets and Japan. Japan, a significant automobile manufacturer and exporter, shipped 5.12 million vehicles in 2024. Honda Cars India exported 45,167 units of SUV Elevate, predominantly to Japan, surpassing its domestic sales of 22,321 units. Maruti Suzuki offers SUVs Fronx and Jimny in Japan. Significantly, Suzuki temporarily suspended new Jimny five-door bookings due to overwhelming post-launch demand, receiving approximately 50,000 orders within four days in Japan. "Indian OEMs have been not only expanding into key markets such as Africa and Latin America but are also beginning to enter developed markets (like Japan) with globally competitive models," Shailesh Chandra, president, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said. In the two-wheeler sector, Yamaha intends to begin exporting premium motorcycles to Japan soon. Itaru Otani, chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group, stated, "The sourcing cost, the labour cost, is quite low in India compared to other countries." "We are exporting nearly a third of our output to 58 countries already. We started exports to Europe from India at the end of last year. The next step is to ship to other advanced markets like Japan and the US," Otani added. India's automobile exports increased by 15% to 770,364 vehicles last fiscal year, significantly outperforming domestic sales growth of 2% at 4.3 million vehicles. While compact passenger vehicles constitute over 27% of exports, measuring up to 4 metres in length and up to 1.4-litres, compact SUVs of similar dimensions are gaining prominence.
