Waste-to-energy plan gets a push after Swachh ranking

Lucknow: Following its third-place ranking in the 'Swachh Shehar' million-plus category of the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, the city is set to prioritise waste-to-energy (WtE) and sewage treatment initiatives. On her return to the city, Mayor Sushma Kharkwal said the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) would now focus on the scientific management of solid waste through a WtE plant to be set up at Shivri. The facility will convert refuse-derived fuel (RDF) — made from non-recyclable plastics, paper, cardboard and other combustible material — into electricity. "Our first priority is to establish a waste-to-energy plant in the city to tackle the waste in a scientific way," said the mayor. The city generates 1,000–1,200 metric tonnes of RDF daily, much of which is transported to cement factories about 500 km away. The new plant will reduce these high logistic costs by processing RDF locally. It will be a 15 MW RDF-to-electricity facility, proposed under a public-private partnership using the design, build, finance, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model. The project, estimated at Rs 450 crore, will be developed on 20–25 acres and require about three million litre water per day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo The plant, expected to be completed in two years, will generate employment, produce revenue through electricity sale and support carbon credit activities. The mayor emphasised the need to strengthen coordination between the Jal Kal department and LMC to improve the city's sewer infrastructure. "It will curb water pollution," she added. She acknowledged the support of Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, stating that their guidance helped turn cleanliness into a public movement. Ministers A K Sharma and Suresh Khanna were also credited for their contributions. Kharakwal attributed the city's top-three ranking to efforts of govt officials, corporators and citizens. The next goal is to make Lucknow the cleanest city in the country through collective efforts, she said.

City Cleans Its Act, Breaks Into Top League

1 2 Lucknow: Lucknow has secured the third position in the country in the 'Swachh Shehar' million-plus category of Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, a cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The city's improved performance is attributed to enhanced door-to-door waste collection, segregation, public engagement and awareness campaigns. This category, introduced for the first time, covers 40 cities with a population of over 10 lakh. The 23 cities which topped in various population categories in the past three years made it to 'Super Swachh League' and they will compete next year. Indore again topped the Super Swachh League in the million-plus population category, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. The results were announced on Thursday, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the award to the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) at a ceremony held in New Delhi. Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 marked the ninth edition of the national cleanliness survey and introduced several reforms aimed at inclusivity. Guwahati shines in Swachh survey, other NE cities lag

1 2 Guwahati: Northeast's biggest city, Guwahati, shines at the 44th national rank in the 3-10 lakh population category, a significant leap from 402nd rank last year, in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 rankings announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on Thursday. Besides Guwahati, all the other cities across the northeastern states lag behind in the assessment. However, six cities — North Lakhimpur in Assam, Jiribam in Manipur, Shillong in Meghalaya, Lunglei in Mizoram, Jalukie in Nagaland, and Khowai in Tripura — emerged as promising "Swachh Shehar". These six cities, along with Guwahati, have won the "Promising Swachh Shehar of the State" award. Six urban local bodies (ULBs) of Assam — North Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Bilasipara, Makum, and Mariani — received 'ODF++' (Open Defecation Free) certification, Agartala in Tripura and Jiribam in Manipur also received the certification. No ULB of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, or Meghalaya received the certification. The certification signifies a significant advancement in sanitation beyond simply being free from open defecation. It means an area not only achieves ODF status (no open defecation) and ODF+ status (functional and well-maintained public and community toilets, along with solid and liquid waste management) but also ensures safe management and treatment of faecal sludge and sewage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Guwahati, Nagaon, Silchar, and Dibrugarh in Assam received a one-star rating in the 'Garbage Free City' category, while a one-star rating was awarded to Imphal and a three-star rating to Jiribam in Manipur, and a one-star rating to Panisagar in Tripura. No cities from Nagaland, Arunachal, and Meghalaya received any rating in the Garbage Free City category. In the northeast, Assam topped the list as far as the "door-to-door" garbage collection is concerned, as 57% of garbage is collected from door to door across the 96 ULBs. Assam is followed by Tripura with 55% across 20 ULBs. However, the scenario is not encouraging in Arunachal, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Except Assam and Manipur, the treatment of the collected garbage in all the northeastern states is very poor. In a few states, no treatment of garbage is done at all, the Swachh Survekshan report revealed.
