Bulk waste generators that don't sort waste at source will be fined in Noida

Bulk waste generators which will not segregate waste at source will be imposed a penalty of ₹ 500 starting July 1, the Noida authority has decided. (Photo by Sunil Ghosh / Hindustan Times) The order comes after the authority had earlier this week directed bulk waste generators to handover only dry waste to the collector, and the wet waste must be processed into compost for recycling, officials said. The authority's health department is organising an awareness workshop for bulk waste generators including apartment owners association, hotels, restaurants, hospital and nursing homes to improve sanitation services so the city can perform better in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2025, officials said. Further, if the bulk waste generator will not set up a compost making unit, the authority will stop collecting their waste from July 1. 'We've advised them several times in the past about waste segregation, and setting up of compost making units. We have warned them earlier too. It's time they cooperate so Noida can perform better in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan. If they fail to do so, they will have to pay the fine of ₹ 500 from July 1,' Indu Prakash Singh, officer on special duty, Noida Authority, said. According to Solid Waste Management Rules, any entity producing over 100 kg of waste daily is classified as a bulk waste generator and is mandated to process wet waste through composting. The authority on Thursday held a workshop in Panchsheel Balak Inter College in Sector 91, attended by owners of hotels, restaurants, hospitals, schools, colleges, apartment owners' associations, and other bulk waste producers. The authority had also organised this workshop on June 14 at the same place, appealing the bulk waste generators to comply with the rules or face penalty. Experts at the event urged stakeholders to segregate dry and wet waste and highlighted that composting can be done easily on-site. In the previous years, Noida ranked 324th in 2018 Swacch Survekshan contest, 150th in 2019 (1st in Uttar Pradesh), 25th in 2020, 4th in 2021 (7-star garbage-free city), and 5th in 2022 (recognised as a 'self-sustainable city'). In 2023, Noida ranked 14th on national level and received a five-star rating in garbage-free and water-plus (wastewater recycling) categories.

Ketan Garg assumes charge as GVMC Commissioner

The 2018 batch IAS officer, Ketan Garg, assumed charge as the Commissioner of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Saturday. His appointment ends a four-month vacancy in the position, which had remained unfilled since the transfer of P. Sampath Kumar by the State Government in January. In the interim, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad had been handling the additional responsibilities of the post. After assuming charge at the office, Mr. Ketan Garg said that sanitation and beautification would be given top priority in the city. Interacting with the media, Mr. Garg said that providing essential civic infrastructure such as drinking water supply, street lighting, drainage systems, and road maintenance would also be given importance. He said he would strive to take forward the development by coordinating with corporators and public elected representatives. He assured that funds from GVMC, the State, and the Central governments would be utilised effectively for the development of the city. He said that the corporation will extend complete support to government flagship projects like proposed metro rail and flyover which are in various stages. Mr. Ketan Garg said that he would prepare plans to make Visakhapatnam cleanest city in the country as part of preparation for the coming Swachh Survekshan, with cooperation from all stakeholders. He said that steps would be taken for development of parks and junctions. With the monsoon season round the corner, measures would be implemented to clear waste from major drains. To tackle mosquito-borne diseases, seasonal surveys will be conducted to monitor and prevent diseases like malaria and dengue. When asked about defunct CCTV cameras, he said that the CCTV aspect would be managed jointly with the Police department. He also expressed interest in collaborating with other cities to develop 'Sister City' partnerships. The previous posting of Mr. Garg was Commissioner of Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation.

NMC Reappoints Silent ‘Swachh' Ambassadors, Overlooks Real Ground-Level Champions

Nagpur: In yet another instance of tokenism trumping accountability, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Friday reappointed 10 individuals as Swachh Bharat brand ambassadors — despite the fact that most of them were inactive throughout the past year. Shockingly, some didn't even attend their own reappointment ceremony. According to insiders and civic records, barring a civic activist and a homemaker — both of whom consistently supported NMC-led cleanliness campaigns — the rest of the ambassadors neither showed up for official initiatives nor launched any public awareness activities independently. Despite this, the civic body once again handed out the honorary titles, ignoring grassroots workers who have been relentlessly promoting hygiene, waste segregation, and sustainable practices in the city. A senior NMC official summed up the frustration: "We see housing society groups conducting composting workshops, young volunteers organising street cleaning drives, and NGOs educating slum clusters on segregation. But these names — mostly influencers, radio jockeys, bloggers, and fitness coaches — have done virtually nothing for the cause." Shockingly, at least three of the reappointed ambassadors did not even turn up for the installation event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 6 sätt att gå i pension bekvämt med 3 000 000 kr Fisher Invest. Norden Undo Yet, their absence didn't deter additional municipal commissioner Vasumana Pant and chief sanitation officer Dr Gajendra Mahalle from handing out offer letters to eight others at a function. Defending the reappointments, Dr Mahalle claimed, "They often participate in civic body events," though NMC failed to provide any Swachh Bharat awareness programme which they either attended or organised awareness drives in their localities. The current list includes a mix of digital influencers with thousands of followers, a sportsperson with marathon credentials, a transgender representative, and individuals from entertainment and wellness backgrounds. But residents question the effectiveness of giving out ceremonial titles without any performance audit. "There's zero accountability. This is a publicity stunt that insults the work of hundreds of citizens who sweat it out for cleanliness without any recognition," said a civic group member from Dharampeth. With the city fairing poorly in Swachh Survekshan rankings since the last couple of years, critics argue that Nagpur's symbolic approach could hurt its performance in future rankings too, which increasingly rely on authentic citizen participation. Without a structured evaluation framework or criteria for impact, the brand ambassador initiative risks becoming irrelevant. "If NMC is serious about cleanliness, it must stop chasing popularity and start rewarding dedication," said a vigilant citizen. "Otherwise, these invisible ambassadors will only tarnish the very mission they're supposed to lead."

Noida admin warns bulk waste generators to set up compost units within 15 days

The Noida authority on Friday issued a 15-day ultimatum to all bulk waste generators to install compost processing units on their premises, failing which legal action will be initiated under Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, officials said. The directive was issued during a workshop held at Panchsheel Balak Inter College in Sector 91, attended by owners of hotels, restaurants, hospitals, schools, colleges, apartment owners' associations, and other bulk waste producers, officials added. 'If the bulk waste generators do not set up compost processing units, the authority will stop collecting their waste after the 15-day deadline,' said Indu Prakash Singh, officer on special duty (OSD), Noida authority. 'We've advised them several times in the past. It's time they cooperate so Noida can perform better in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan,' Singh added. According to the solid waste management rules, any entity producing over 100 kg of waste daily is classified as a bulk waste generator and is mandated to process wet waste through composting. Experts at the event urged stakeholders to segregate dry and wet waste and highlighted that composting can be done easily on-site. Citizens were also advised to report construction and demolition waste issues via helpline 18008919657. The authority currently treats 300 tonnes of such waste daily at its Sector 80 facility, officials said. The move is aimed at improving Noida's ranking in the Union housing and urban affairs ministry's Swachh Survekshan survey, authority officials said. In 2023, Noida was ranked 14th nationally and received five-star ratings in garbage-free and water-plus (wastewater recycling) categories. 'We hope that in the 2024-25 survey, Noida performs better and secures 1st spot,' Singh added.

Noida gives bulk waste generators 15 days to install compost units

Noida: Noida Authority on Friday directed bulk waste generators to install compost processing units at their premises within 15 days or face action under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The directive was issued during a workshop organised at Panchsheel Balak Inter College in Sector 91, attended by representatives from hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals, colleges, and apartment owner associations, entities classified as bulk waste generators for producing over 100 kg of waste per day. "We've given a 15-day deadline. If composting units are not set up by then, legal action will follow, and we'll also stop collecting waste from the violators," said S.P. Singh, general manager (Health), Noida Authority. He added that collective compliance could help Noida secure the top spot in the upcoming Swachh Survekshan 2024, scheduled later this year. Currently, the city ranks 14th in the annual national cleanliness survey conducted by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. At the workshop, officials emphasized the importance of in-house composting of wet waste and the need for strict segregation between dry and wet waste at the source. "Wet waste can be easily converted into compost within residential complexes, hotels, or school campuses. This reduces the burden on the city's central waste handling system," Singh said. The civic body has also issued a helpline number, 18008919657, for residents and institutions to report issues related to construction and demolition (C&D) waste. The Authority processes around 300 tonnes of C&D waste daily at its Sector 80 facility. Officials said better waste management at the source, particularly by large generators, would significantly improve Noida's score in cleanliness parameters, including waste segregation, treatment, and civic participation. The 15-day compliance window is part of a broader strategy to decentralise waste management, reduce landfill burden, and boost community accountability. With Swachh Survekshan rankings often influencing funding and urban development incentives, civic authorities are doubling down on enforcement measures in the lead-up to the survey.
