AFRY plans additional tracks for railway section in Finland

AFRY Finland, in collaboration with Sweco Finland, has been commissioned by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to plan additional tracks for the railway section between Hyvinkää and Riihimäki. This railway expansion project is set to enhance both passenger and freight traffic on the nation's busiest railway line. The assignment involves the planning of another western track and a freight traffic track extending from the Hyvinkää station to the Riihimäki freight yard. AFRY is tasked with comprehensive planning responsibilities, including railway and road planning, environmental, civil, and municipal infrastructure planning, project management, geotechnical engineering, and bridge and structural engineering. As part of the project, the company will plan seven bridges along the railway, complete with their retaining walls and pile slabs. This work falls under a four-year framework agreement with the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, which extends to 2027. AFRY Transportation Finland director Mikko Inkala said: 'AFRY is well-positioned to lead the planning of this project. Our familiarity with the site, gained from managing its previous planning phase, ensures a seamless transition to the current phase. 'This project highlights AFRY's expertise in complex railway design, as well as our industry-leading capabilities in geotechnical and bridge engineering.' The planning phase for this construction project is expected to continue until the end of 2026, with construction commencing thereafter. Earlier in the year, AFRY secured the planning contract for the Breganzona tunnel in Switzerland via the Tram Ticino consortium. Additionally, last year, the company embarked on the design of a waste-to-energy facility near Mělník in the central Czech Republic. They address the accelerating need for circular business models and regulatory compliance – particularly in terms of EU-wide digital product passports, ESG reporting and supply chain transparency. In 2024, the companies reported a combined turnover of EUR 5.1 million, while Sweco bv/srl, with its registered office in Brussels, posted a turnover of approximately EUR 350 million. The companies are being consolidated into Sweco immediately. Sweco chosen as part of alliance for Rail Baltica Estonia Section 1 project

Sweco, a European engineering and architecture consultancy, has been chosen as a part of a project alliance for the design and construction of the first section of the Estonian segment of Rail Baltica. This EU-funded venture aims to establish a new railway connection from Tallinn, Estonia, through the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) to Poland. The project is anticipated to continue until 2030. Sweco president and CEO Åsa Bergman said: 'I am delighted that Sweco has been selected to contribute to this important project, linking the Baltic nations to the rest of Europe. As a leading European consultancy in the field of transportation, with 6,000 experts in mobility and active travel, Sweco is involved in a range of client projects in the ongoing green transition of Europe's transportation sector. "Our cross-border team is fully committed to beginning work within the alliance once the procurement process is completed.' The estimated overall cost for Section 1, stretching from Tallinn Ülemiste to Pärnu, is approximately €394m ($428.5m). However, the specific order value for Sweco remains to be determined. This vital infrastructure project will see the construction of 213km of new European-gauge (1,435mm) railway track in Estonia. Funding for Rail Baltica is being sourced from a mix of EU funds, national contributions from the Baltic states, and private investments. The EU, through its Connecting Europe Facility and other regional development programmes, provides a significant portion of this funding. In January this year, Sweco signed an agreement to acquire Sipti Consulting, a company specialising in geotechnical and environmental design consulting. Last December, Sweco secured contracts to provide services involving construction and expansion for two hospital projects in Germany.
