Sweet Magnolias Season 5: Release date rumors, cast updates and what to expect next
By Aman Shukla Published on July 7, 2025, 18:30 IST Last updated July 7, 2025, 11:05 IST Alright, Sweet Magnolias fans, grab your margarita glasses because we're diving into the latest scoop on Season 5! After Season 4 dropped on Netflix in February 2025, leaving us all reeling from that emotional finale, we're itching to know what's next for Maddie, Dana Sue, Helen, and the whole Serenity gang. From whispers about the release date to who's coming back and what drama's brewing, here's the lowdown on what to expect. Let's spill the tea! When Will Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Hit Netflix? No official release date yet, but let's piece together the clues. Filming kicked off on June 2, 2025, and should wrap by September 17, 2025, mostly in Atlanta, Georgia, with some cool New York City scenes thrown in. If we look at Season 4, which finished filming in May 2024 and landed on Netflix nine months later in February 2025, we're probably looking at a similar timeline. My guess? Season 5 could drop between summer and fall 2026, maybe August or September. Who's Back? Cast Updates for Season 5 The soul of Sweet Magnolias is its cast, and Season 5 is bringing back all our favorites. Here's who's set to return and what they're up to: JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie Townsend Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue Sullivan Heather Headley as Helen Decatur The Supporting Crew: Expect Justin Bruening (Cal), Brandon Quinn (Ronnie), Dion Johnstone (Erik), Carson Rowland (Ty), Anneliese Judge (Annie), Logan Allen (Kyle), Jamie Lynn Spears (Noreen), and Chris Medlin (Isaac) to return. Sadly, Chris Klein's Bill Townsend won't be back after his heartbreaking exit in Season 4. New characters might pop up too, because Serenity loves a fresh face to stir the pot. The writing team's got some familiar names like Sheryl J. Anderson and Michelle Denise Jackson, plus a new writer, Quincy Cho, who's penning her first episode. I'm excited to see what new vibes they bring! What's Coming in Season 5? Season 4 left us with cliffhangers and big changes, so let's break down what might happen next. Spoiler alert: We are just guessing based on the finale and cast interviews, but here's what we think we're in for: Helen and Erik's Big Day Helen's engagement to Erik had me tearing up, and Season 5 is gearing up for their wedding. Heather Headley promised it'll be a stylish, emotional bash, and I'm all in for the Magnolias planning it together. Maybe Maddie and Dana Sue will be bridesmaids, pouring their hearts into making it perfect. Annie and Ty's Long-Distance Love Annie's heading to California for photography school, and Ty's off to Europe with his band. Can their romance survive the miles? We are rooting for these two, but young love is tricky. Season 5 might show them growing apart or finding ways to stay connected, like late-night video calls or surprise visits. Either way, it's gonna tug at our heartstrings. Serenity's New Normal After Season 4's storm and Bill's death, Serenity's rebuilding. Noreen's running a mobile clinic with Jeremy, Isaac's got a new romance with Michael, and Peggy's stepping up as mayor. We are betting we'll see new faces or old enemies (Mary Vaughn, anyone?) stirring up trouble. The show's great at balancing cozy vibes with just enough drama to keep us hooked. First Look at ‘Sweet Magnolias' Season 5 Just Dropped & the Internet Is Having Mixed Reactions
Two months after Sweet Magnolias was officially renewed for season five, production is officially underway—and this time, it's happening in none other than New York City. Yep, Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley) have traded Serenity, South Carolina, for the Big Apple (at least for now) and thanks to eagle-eyed fans and passersby, there's already plenty of behind-the-scenes footage floating around social media. TVLine also dropped a few photos of the trio filming in Grand Central Terminal and let's just say the internet has thoughts. As fans might remember, Maddie recently accepted an irresistible marketing role at a publishing house in NYC—so it tracks that the ladies would take a little trip up north. But not everyone is thrilled about the change in scenery. Some fans were all in on the vibe shift, flooding the comments with excitement. 'My favorite show in my favorite city!!!' and 'I am here for it!!!!! Holy exciting!!!!!' were just a few of the reactions. Others, however, weren't quite as hyped. 'Why NYC?!? I feel it's going to change,' one person wrote. Another added, 'Booooo! No! Maddie moving to NYC was the worst idea! Tyler finally found his people and was happy. Serenity is basically a character in the show. I hope they fix this in the upcoming season.' A third chimed in with, 'I can't say I'm happy about this. Why do shows always stray so far from the original premises that people loved?' Courtesy of Netflix According to TVLine, the NYC scenes are part of a girls' trip—so no, the Sweet Magnolias haven't officially left Serenity behind. There's no release date for season five just yet, but one thing's for sure: fans will definitely be tuning in to get answers after those season four cliffhangers. The Sweet Magnolias Take Manhattan in Season 5 First Look (Exclusive)
Netflix is bringing Serenity to the Big Apple. Production on Sweet Magnolias' fifth season is currently underway in New York City, where Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) recently accepted a too-good-to-refuse marketing position at a publishing house. And where there's one Magnolia, two more can't be far behind. That's right, Helen (Heather Headley) and Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) are taking a girls' trip to Manhattan to see Maddie in her element — and TVLine has an exclusive first look at all three ladies strutting through the halls of Grand Central Terminal: 'It was really exciting,' Swisher previously told TVLine about the idea of Maddie getting to spread her wings. 'I think a lot of people saw that happen and thought, 'Oh God, is this the end of the show? Maddie's leaving town. What does that look like?!'' (Now that Sweet Magnolias has been renewed for Season 5, we'll get to find out!) Swisher is also excited to see Maddie 'get her groove back,' even if it means replacing the trio's iconic margarita nights with a round of cosmos. Of course, Maddie's new life in the big city is only one exciting development fans can expect in Season 5. For starters, following Erik's proposal in the finale, Helen finally has a wedding to plan! 'The Helen Decatur wedding has to be the wedding of all weddings,' Headley told TVLine. 'When she's at the front of the church, I want her train to still be coming out of the car.' An official release date for Sweet Magnolias Season 5 has not yet been announced, but with filming now underway, we're definitely moving in the right direction. From The Split to This Is Us, the 6 best family dramas to watch after Ginny & Georgia
There's a lot to love about Netflix's Ginny & Georgia. From the outrageously ridiculous plots, to the questionable age differences between the cast and the characters they play, to the way they actually highlight important issues we need to see on screen, we can't help but bingewatch the series. And one of the biggest things we love about the series is the intergenerational family dynamic. In just one series you get to explore the lives of both teenagers, kids and adults. If like us this is one of the biggest draws to the series for you too, then we've rounded up six must watch shows you need to watch next that have a similar family dynamic to the storytelling in Ginny & Georgia. Where to watch: Channel 4 With six seasons there's a lot to keep you occupied if you watch This Is Us. It follows the lives of one family - the two parents and their three children - over various different timelines and stages of their lives. There's intense storylines including grief, heartbreak and love. Trust us - you'll need the tissues when you watch this one. Where to watch: Netflix Friends are often family, and Firefly Lane does an incredible job of showcasing this. It's about two girls Tully and Kate who met when Tully moves in next door with her chaotic single mother. The show jumps between various timelines (just like Ginny & Georgia) as you watch the women go through first love, their careers, children and illness. With just two long seasons you could potentially bingewatch it over a weekend. Where to watch: Netflix At the heart of Sweet Magnolias is the story of three best friends, but after a few episodes it becomes clear it's more than just that and we get introduced to their families and community. Just like in Ginny & Georgia there's a lot of high and low stakes drama as the three women navigate divorce, betrayal and running their own business together in the small and close town of Serenity in South Carolina. Where to watch: BBC iPlayer Part legal drama, part family series, The Split is perfect for you if you loved seeing Georgia's trial unfold during the recent series of Ginny & Georgia. The BBC series is about the Defoe family who all work in divorce law for their family's firm. Well, all except the eldest daughter Hannah, who works for the family's rival firm. As well as their clients' own cases to win, they've all got troubles of their own to sort out. Where to watch: Channel 4 Based on Celeste Ng's novel of the same name, Little Fires Everywhere is perfect if you love the small town drama of Wellsbury in Ginny & Georgia and how one seemingly perfect community can actually hold a lot of darkness. It stars Reese Witherspoon as Elena Richardson who invites single mother Mia Warren (played by Kerry Washington) and her daughter into her family's lives, only for her decision to have disastrous consequences. Where to watch: Netflix If you want a more light-hearted family drama series then we'd recommend The Duchess. It stars Katherine Ryan as a single mother in London trying to raise her daughter. The unconventional dynamic between Katherine's character aptly named Katherine and her on-screen daughter Olive, has a lot of similarities between that of Ginny and Georgia. Expect a lot of laughs, incredible costumes and touching moments too. Ginny and Georgia is available on Netflix now

Is ‘Sweet Magnolias' returning for season 5? Everything we know so far
Sweet Magnolias has captured the hearts of Netflix viewers with its heartwarming tales of friendship, romance, and small-town life in Serenity, South Carolina. After the emotional rollercoaster of Season 4, fans are eager to know: Is Sweet Magnolias Season 5 happening? Here's everything we know so far about the future of the beloved series. Sweet Magnolias Season 5: Renewal Status Good news for fans! Netflix officially renewed Sweet Magnolias for Season 5 on April 23, 2025, just over two months after the Season 4 premiere on February 6, 2025. This quicker-than-usual renewal (compared to the three-month gap between Seasons 3 and 4) signals Netflix's confidence in the show's enduring popularity, despite a slight dip in Season 4 viewership. The upcoming season will consist of 10 episodes, staying consistent with previous seasons. Production is set to begin in June 2025, with a likely release in 2026. When Will Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Premiere? While Netflix hasn't announced an exact premiere date, production is slated to start in June 2025, primarily in Atlanta, Georgia, where previous seasons were filmed. Given the typical 6–9 month post-production timeline, Sweet Magnolias Season 5 is expected to premiere in early to mid-2026, possibly around February or spring, aligning with past release patterns (2020, 2022, 2023, and 2025). It's unclear if filming will include New York City to reflect Maddie's move or rely on sets in Atlanta. What Will Sweet Magnolias Season 5 Be About? While Netflix hasn't released an official plot synopsis, the Season 4 finale left several storylines ripe for exploration. The show, based on Sherryl Woods' 11-book series, follows lifelong friends Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) as they navigate love, career, and family. Season 4 ended with significant developments that set the stage for Season 5: Maddie's Move to New York City: Maddie's acceptance of a publishing job in NYC raises questions about how her move will affect her relationships with her new husband, Cal (Justin Bruening), her children, and her lifelong friends. Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson emphasized the theme of women prioritizing personal ambitions, noting, 'We feel so many women are confronted with, 'Am I allowed to put myself first this one time?'' Season 5 will likely explore whether the Magnolias' friendship can withstand this physical distance. Helen and Erik's Wedding: Helen and Erik (Dion Johnstone) got engaged in Season 4, and fans are buzzing about what Heather Headley called 'the wedding of all weddings for Serenity.' Expect Season 5 to dive into wedding planning, with Helen's love for fashion promising a spectacular event. Ty and Annie's Relationship: The younger generation faces its own drama. Ty (Carson Rowland) and Annie (Anneliese Judge) confessed their feelings, but their paths diverged with Annie heading to her dream photography school in California and Ty embarking on a band tour. Will they attempt a long-distance relationship, or will their romance falter?
