Host Swiss team exits Euro 2025 with respect from Spain and a new passion for women's soccer
BERN, Switzerland — The guard of honor Spain's players gave their beaten Switzerland opponents leaving the field told a strong story. A Swiss team whose prospects at its home Women's European Championship were unclear a month ago left bathed in warmth and affection after a 2-0 loss to the tournament favorite in the quarterfinals on Friday.

'World's sexiest footballer' Alisha Lehmann is assigned a bodyguard at the Women's Euros, as online hate floods in after losing 'Queen' status
'World's sexiest footballer' Alisha Lehmann has been given her own bodyguard at the Women's Euros due to her significant popularity with fans at the tournament. Lehmann is involved with the Switzerland squad, who will take on Spain on Friday night for a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament. They will, however, go into the match as huge underdogs. The Juventus forward had been backed to be a key player for her side, having accumulated 60 international caps at 26, but has played just nine minutes so far, with that action coming against Finland. Therefore, she is not expected to start the match against Spain, but is still by far and away the most famous player in the Switzerland squad, accumulating over 17million Instagram followers. She has received widespread praise for her apparent good looks, and is often a target for autograph or selfie-hunting fans at games who are keen to meet the players. As a result, home nation Switzerland have revealed that Lehmann has been given added protection as the tournament reaches the knockout stages and interest is ramped up even higher. 'We always ensure that the safety of the players is our top priority in all stadiums,' Sven Micosse, press spokesperson for the Swiss women's national team, told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. 'This is organized by UEFA during the tournament, and our head of security is always on site. 'After the matches, he is always there when the players approach the fans, and due to Alisha Lehmann's fame, he sometimes accompanies them a little further.' Lehmann has been giving her followers a behind-the-scenes look into life at the Euros away from the pitch, as she embarks on sight-seeing trips and days off with her team-mates. This week, she shared a snap alongside two fellow Switzerland players, donning a crop top, cap, sunglasses and three-quarter length trousers, giving her followers an insight of what the players are up to when not on the pitch. Bild have reported that a 'man in a suit' often appears near Lehmann, focusing on her safety as the head of security at the Swiss national team. He is said to make sure she is safe as fans shout and hunt for photos and autographs after training and at games. Lehmann has often been dubbed the queen of the Switzerland national team due to her social media following, but a recent UEFA post was hit with backlash as they shared news of Switerland's quarter-final qualification. One fan commented: 'Is there really no better one?' with it suggested that her team-mates are now growing in popularity ahead of her. At club level, Lehmann joined Juventus from Aston Villa last summer, but has found it hard to come by in terms of form with her future up in the air. She appeared to follow her then-boyfriend Douglas Luiz to Turin, but the duo have now reportedly split. The Swiss star first began dating Luiz back in 2021, before they broke up a year later and rekindled at the start of 2024. Since then, the couple had enjoyed a close relationship and both sealed a move to Italian giants Juventus during the summer window last year. Luiz joined from Aston Villa for £42.4 million having emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. Lehmann followed suit just seven days later, also moving from Villa. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Lehmann and Luiz split some time ago and the pair are seen having different futures with Juventus. Despite her lack of game time, Lehmann is expected to remain at the club, with the Swiss international contracted to Juventus Women's team until 2027. The 26-year-old, whose move alongside Luiz was the first 'couples transfer' of its kind, has seen her campaign also disrupted by fitness issues. Lehmann was then criticised earlier this year for her alleged over-the-top celebrations after Juventus beat AC Milan to win the Serie A title, given she has played just 37 minutes this year. Following their triumph, the jubilant Juventus players were quick to revel in their achievement, dancing on the field in formation. But Lehmann appeared to be leading the dance at the front on her own, with her team-mates lined up behind her, and this appeared to touch a nerve with some supporters, who argued she had a minimal role in the actual campaign. The Swiss international only played eight minutes of the title-clinching win, her first league outing since a nine-minute cameo again against AC Milan on February 9. In fact, Lehmann only played 37 minutes since the turn of the year, and has not featured for 90 minutes since a clash with Sassuolo back in November.

Sweet success eludes proud Swiss in narrow Norway defeat
BASEL, Switzerland, July 2 (Reuters) - When Switzerland's Nadine Riesen put her side 1-0 up against Norway in their Women's Euro 2025 opener at St. Jakobs-Park on Wednesday the whole nation erupted and even though the Swiss let their lead slip and lost 2-1, they still left the stadium with their heads held high. "It felt amazing. I couldn't imagine that I would score a goal, and even happier that we could celebrate all together. The atmosphere was so nice, and the whole stadium and, yeah, it's something I will never forget," the 25-year-old Riesen told Reuters, beaming with pride despite the defeat. "The first half, I think we played pretty well, we showed what we can do. We wanted to give the whole of Switzerland something back... and it's so sad that we didn't make it through the second half." Norway captain Ada Hegerberg scored just after the break and Switzerland then conceded an own goal. Despite plenty of chances and a penalty award that was overturned after a VAR review, the hosts could not fashion another goal. Wednesday's game was Switzerland's third single-goal defeat to Norway in 2025 but Riesen said her side were proud of what they had done. "It's a positive feeling, leaving from here -- of course, we're disappointed that we couldn't win, we wanted the three points for sure, so we will keep looking for that, and we will take the first half into Sunday," she said. "And hopefully also the atmosphere, because we felt like we were 12 players on the pitch, not only 11, because everyone was supporting, everyone's rooting, and we really felt that." Switzerland face Iceland, who lost 1-0 to Finland in the tournament's opening game earlier in the day, in Bern on Sunday.
