TOKYO (TR) – A man in custody over the alleged fatal stabbing of male employee at a law firm inside the Sunshine 60 building in Toshima Ward earlier this week has told police that he 'didn't care if he died,' according to media reports. Just before noon on July 1, a male employee at the Adire Legal Professional Corporation, located on the 31st floor, alerted emergency services. 'A male staff member has been stabbed,' the caller said. Authorities arriving at the scene, found the victim — later identified as 36-year-old Daiki Yoshino — collapsed with stab wounds to the throat and neck. He later confirmed dead at a hospital, reports Fuji News Network (July 1). Shortly thereafter, Reito Watanabe, a 50-year-old resident of Shinjuku Ward, appeared at a police box near Ikebukuro Station's East Exit. He then confessing to stabbing the man with a kitchen knife. Police then arrested him on suspicion of attempted murder. At the time, he was in possession of bloodstained folding knife with a 9-centimeter-long blade. Two additional knives were found in his backpack. He told police, 'I don't remember stabbing him, but before I knew it I had done it.' Police sent Watanabe to prosecutors on suspicion of murder and violating of the Swords and Firearms Control Law on July 3. Reito Watanabe was arrested for murder on July 1 (X) Without saying a word According to police, Watanabe stabbed Yoshino from behind while he was seated without saying a word. The suspect then fled on foot toward the station. The East Exit of Ikebukuro Station is located about 500 meters from the scene. In early June, Watanabe told an acquaintance that he was going to stab someone and go to prison, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (July 3). His father, who had been contacted, then consulted the police. Police officers later visited the suspect's home along with his parents, but he was not there. After confirming that there were no dangerous objects in the residence, they asked that his parents to talk to him and contact the police at a later date, reports NHK (July 2). Police believe that Watanabe had a grudge again Yoshino. According to investigators, Watanabe explained that he had purchased at least one of the knives about a month ago and had been carrying it around with him. He said, 'I felt like [Yoshino] was making fun of me, and I was growing resentful. I stabbed him, thinking that I didn't care if I died.' After the stabbing incident, the law firm commented, 'We sincerely pray for the repose of our deceased employee. We will fully cooperate with the investigation and promptly report the facts as they become clear.'

TOKYO (TR) – A 43-year-old man in custody over the alleged stabbing of university student on a Tokyo Metro subway line in Bunkyo Ward on Wednesday has told police that he committed the crime to send a message to his 'education-conscious parents,' reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (May 9). At just before 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Yoshitaka Toda, of no known occupation, allegedly used a kitchen knife to slash the head of a third-year Tokyo University student, 20, on a Namboku Line train stopped at Todai-mae Station. Three commuters apprehended Toda at the scene. One of them, a Nepalese man, suffered a cut index finger on his right hand. Police arriving at the station arrested Toda on suspicion of attempted murder. They also retrieved a butcher knife from the subway pkatform. Neither the student nor the Nepalese man suffered serious injuries, police said. Yoshitaka Toda (X) 'Crimes will occur' Police believe that he chose the station since it is named after Tokyo University and attacked passengers indiscriminately. According to a senior official with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, Toda had remained silent during questioning after his arrest. But he started explaining his motive on Thursday. 'I wanted to show my education-conscious parents who were aiming for [me to go to] Tokyo University that if they go too far, crimes will occur,' he told police, according to an investigative source. Police found a butcher knife on the subway platform after the stabbing on Wednesday night (X) 'I didn't care if he died' Toda, who lives in the village of Ikusaka, Nagano Prefecture, said that he stopped going to school in junior high school because of his strict parents. He confessed, 'The station is named after Tokyo University, so I thought it would be easy to associate it with educational abuse.' When asked why he attacked the student, he said, 'I targeted him because he happened to be nearby. I didn't care if he died.' On Friday, police sent Toda to the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on suspicion of attempted murder and violation of the Swords and Firearms Control Law.

OSAKA (TR) – In a video posted by Mainichi Broadasting System (Apr. 30), a man stands on a street in Toyonaka City holding a bloody knife in his left hand as he yells at a police car. 'Come on! Someone's going to die!' he shouts. 'I'm going to be the murderer.' The time is just before 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday. A bar owner, aged in his 20s, had just been stabbed to death outside a nearby apartment complex in Shibaharacho, the result of an apparent dispute over an unpaid bar tab. The man with the knife is 52-year-old Takahiro Sugimoto. Police arrested him on suspicion of violating the Swords and Firearms Control Law. Upon his arrest, Sugimoto's clothes were covered in blood. He made a statement to the effect that he had 'stabbed someone at home.' Takahiro Sugimoto (X) 'Payment for meals and drinks' Sugimoto lives in the apartment complex. At around 12:30 a.m., the bar owner and a male colleague, aged in his 40s, visited the residence. According to the colleague, the suspect emerged from the residence and slashed the bar owner in the face. Emergency personnel arriving at the scene found the bar owner collapsed and bleeding. He was later confirmed dead, police said. The colleague explained to police that he worked for the deceased man at the bar in Osaka City. He said, 'I came to Sugimoto's house to ask for payment for meals and drinks.' Police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.
