Basketballer Kouat Noi on the importance of coming home

Kouat Noi has been a powerhouse for the Sydney Kings in the NBL. This off season he's played for Sutherland Sharks in the NBL1 eastern conference... which means the day would eventually arrive where he'd face the Newcastle Falcons, in his hometown. That day arrived on July the 5th... with Noi describing it as a strange moment, with it being 11 years since he last played in the city. The South Sudanese-Australian basketballer has been in Newcastle in the lead up to the match on Saturday 5th July... visiting his old school with the hopes to inspire the next generation. He caught up with Bridget Murphy and Leah Gilbert ahead of the match.

Kings aiming high as Brazilian big man makes NBL return

NBL champion Tim Soares has confirmed his Sydney Kings return as master coach Brian Goorjian puts the finishing touches on what he hopes can become another title-winning roster. After two seasons abroad, Brazilian big man Soares has reunited with the Kings on a one-year deal alongside fellow key additions Kendric Davis and Matthew Dellavedova. Soares, 28, won a title under then Kings coach Chase Buford in his only previous NBL season in 2022/23. The 211cm centre averaged 10.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 0.9 blocks across 20.9 minutes throughout that campaign, and combined well with MVP Xavier Cooks. "I was always hopeful I'd get another chance to come back and play in Sydney, so I'm really excited to be given this opportunity again," Soares said. "Having the chance to join this talented roster, full of young guys and veterans who know the game, and be coached by someone (like) Goorj, was an easy decision to come back to Sydney. "Not to mention having two talented ball-handlers like Kendric and Delly on the roster will make my job easier as a big man, much like Xav did in our first stint together. "Xav and I had great chemistry during our championship run together, with me being able to space the floor for him to attack the rim, which in fact benefits the whole team." Goorjian was thrilled to sign Soares, who has had stints in Puerto Rico and Japan since his championship-winning season with Sydney. The Kings are aiming high after losing a play-in qualifier last season in legendary coach Goorjian's return to the helm. "The five-man spot is a really important one for us, and after looking at ways to build on last year, we really needed to bring in someone who can bang with those bigger bodies on the inside," Goorjian said. "Tim is exactly that, while also being someone who can finish around the rim, protect the paint and also stretch the floor, which is key alongside Xavier." SYDNEY KINGS' 2025/26 NBL ROSTER: Shaun Bruce, Xavier Cooks, Kendric Davis, Matthew Dellavedova, Jaylin Galloway, Bul Kuol, Keli Leaupepe, Makuach Maluach, Kouat Noi, Tyler Robertston, Tim Soares, Jason Spurgin. Australian Alex Toohey explains how he can fit in with the Warriors

After a whirlwind predraft process, Australian Alex Toohey is eager to get started with the Golden State Warriors during their stint in the California Classic and NBA Summer League. Toohey averaged 10.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.3 assists on 30.2% shooting from 3-point range in 30 appearances with the Sydney Kings. He was rewarded with the NBL Next Generation Award, given to the top player under the age of 25. The 6-foot-8 forward worked out with over a dozen teams ahead of the 2025 NBA draft, including the Warriors. Admittedly, Toohey said the visit with Golden State wasn't his best, but he is still grateful the organization selected him with the 52nd pick last week. "It has been exciting," Toohey said on Monday. "You're kind of not really sure where you're going one day, and then three days later, you're getting ready to play games with them. It is definitely exciting, and I'm very thankful to be part of such a cool organization. Having (Australian and former Warriors center) Andrew Bogut around has helped me a lot. Luck of the dice, but I feel like I got pretty lucky." Toohey was highly touted out of Australia because of his offensive skill set and ability to score in various ways. He also made a jump on the defensive end of the court, thanks to his instincts and 6-foot, 10 3/4-inch wingspan recorded at the draft combine last month. The 21-year-old showed improvement with his 3-point shot this past season after converting 27.3% from beyond the arc in his first year in Sydney. He showcased that improved shot in the combine, connecting on 61.2% of his attempts in two 3-point drills. The Warriors begin their three-game stint in the California Classic on Saturday at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Toohey will be among the players in action and believes he can fit well on the court with the roster. "I think just being versatile, being able to play in big lineups, small lineups and set screens," Toohey said. "Play out of the short roll, make shots, make actions and find my teammates. I'm just excited."

NBA championship winner, Boomers star Matthew Dellavedova lists Melbourne home

Loading content... After inking a deal with a new team, basketball star Matthew Dellavedova and wife Anna have listed their Melbourne home, little more than a year after buying it. They're hoping to sell the Sandringham property for a price in the range of $4.5 million to $4.7 million. The home's on the market because the now former Melbourne United guard signed a three-year deal with the Sydney Kings earlier this year. Cotality records show the home was built in 1890, and was previously sold in April 2024 for $4.825 million. The marketing describes the property as "a rare architectural treasure standing as one of Sandringham's most revered heritage residences". "Showcasing historical distinction and contemporary prestige, intricate period craftsmanship defines this landmark estate of remarkable scale," the marketing states. Sitting on 897 square metres, the house features an outdoor space with a terrace, pool, spa and barbecue kitchen. An open-plan kitchen also opens to the landscaped garden. The home also contains six double bedrooms, including a deluxe ground floor bedroom suite; as well as high ceilings, fireplaces, a cellar and a workshop. Earlier this year, Dellavedova made headlines when he declined the NBL Grand FinalMVP honour after Melbourne United lost the championship series 3-2 to the Illawarra Hawks. Dellavedova declined to accept the award, saying that it belonged to Hawks player Will 'Davo' Hickey instead. Dellavedova, one of the chief villains among Hawks fans during the championship series, was applauded for the display of sportsmanship. In 2016, Dellavedova won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside legendary scorer LeBron James. Afterwards, he signed a four-year deal to play with the Milwaukee Bucks, although he returned to Cleveland from 2018 to 2021. He also later played for the Sacramento Kings before returning to Australia. Dellavedova was also part of the national Boomers team that won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Expressions of interest for the home close on June 30.
