Kanthapuram faction not to back stir against additional school hours
At a time when the Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama led by Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal is all set to launch an agitation against the additional instructional hours in State syllabus schools claiming that it will affect those studying in madrasas, the Samastha faction led by Sunni scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar has sought to distance itself from the protest. A.K. Abdul Hameed, secretary of the Sunni Educational Board of the Kanthapuram faction, told the media on Saturday that the issue could be sorted out through talks with the government. He said that the group had expressed its concerns over the additional hours impacting madrasa studies to the government. Mr. Hameed said that Mr. Musliyar had contacted both Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and General Education Minister V. Sivankutty. 'We will offer our suggestions during the proposed talks with Mr. Sivankutty,' he added.

Additional school hours: Samastha to offer practical suggestions during talks with govt.
Sunni scholars' forum Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama and its affiliate organisations have said they will offer practical suggestions related to the additional instructional hours being implemented in State syllabus schools. This was decided at a meeting held here on Tuesday. The Samastha had opposed the additional working hours for Classes VIII to X, 15 minutes each in the morning and afternoon on all days except Fridays, saying it would affect students who attend 'madrasa' classes early in the morning. Its leaders told the media on Tuesday that if there was no positive response to their suggestions during the proposed talks with Education department officials, protests would be intensified against the government. The Samastha functionaries pointed out that there had been no response to a memorandum submitted by the organisation ahead of the implementation of the new timings. No talks were held either. The Samastha Kerala Madrasa Management Association subsequently declared that it would hold protests against the government across the State. However, General Education Minister V. Sivankutty spoke to Samastha president Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal over phone on July 14 and expressed the government's willingness to hold talks on the issue. M.T. Abdulla Musliyar, general secretary, Samastha Islam Religious Education Board, said that practical suggestions would be put forward during the talks. 'If there is no positive response, all Samastha-affiliated organisations will jointly organise intensified protests. There is no going back on this. The government should take the people into confidence while taking decisions. Religion is a form of education and vice-versa. Religious education is a crucial component of Islam, it cannot be set aside,' he said. The new timings were implemented to realise the target of 220 working days and 1,100 instructional hours for Class VIII as per the Right to Education Act and for Classes IX and X as per the Kerala Education Rules. Samastha secretary Umar Faizy Mukkom, central 'mushawara' member Bahauddin Nadwi, among others, were present at the press meet.

Bakrid to be celebrated in State on Saturday
Muslims in Kerala will celebrate Id-ul-Azha or Bakrid on Saturday, June 7. Unlike other Islamic festivals, animal sacrifice is a prominent component of Bakrid which is celebrated on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dul Haj. It will also coincide with the culmination of the Haj rites being performed in Makkah. Major Kazis in the State, including Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, K. Alikutty Musliar, Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari, Syed Mohammed Koya Jamalullaili Thangal, Syed Nasar Hayy Shihab Thangal, confirmed the Bakrid date on the basis of the lunar month. Unlike Id-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the month-long Ramzan fasting and is typically celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm, the festive spirit will relatively be subdued during Bakrid. The focus of the festival will be more on the spiritual significance and rituals associated with the occasion, serving as a poignant reminder of the trials of Prophet Ibrahim. It will be a festival marking solidarity with the lakhs of pilgrims who gather in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, from around the world to perform Hajj. Cattle prices saw a significant surge in view of the enhanced demand for buffaloes and oxen in cattle markets ahead of Bakrid. Traders reported a price hike of up to 30% and attributed the increase to the festival-driven demand. Special Id prayers will be held at Id Gahs and mosques across the State on Saturday morning. While traditional Sunni sections will prefer mosques for Id prayers, Mujahid and Jamat groups will opt for Id Gahs. In case of morning rain, Id prayers will be shifted to their respective mosques as a contingency measure.

Waqf Act usurped minority rights, criticises meeting
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, usurps the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the minority community, according to a protest meeting organised by the Jamiyyathul Ulama Coordination Committee, Ernakulam, on Sunday (May 4, 2025). Speakers at the meeting, inaugurated by Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama president Syed Mohammed Jifri Muthukoya Thangal, said the new legislation would lead to the alienation of hundreds of mosques, madrasas, and burial grounds. It would even undermine the existence of Muslims in the country, the meeting noted. The meeting resolved to democratically oppose the Union government's move to alienate waqf properties. I.B. Usman Faizi presided, and Syed Ibrahim Khaleel Bukhari delivered the keynote address.
