Syed Saddiq calls for end to police aggression at protests, urges systemic reform
Syed Saddiq exposes government hypocrisy on protests, warns of consequences for crackdown Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman Photo by Mohd Halim Abdul Wahid/SINAR SHAH ALAM – Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called for sweeping reforms to policing and laws governing peaceful assemblies, following claims of police aggression during the recent Himpunan Aman Rakyat Benci Rasuah 2.0 rally. The anti-corruption protest, held last Saturday, took a contentious turn after a student activist was allegedly manhandled and arrested without clear justification. The anti-corruption protest, held last Saturday, took a contentious turn after a student activist was allegedly manhandled and arrested without clear justification. The incident has drawn criticism from activists and rights groups, who say it reflects a troubling pattern of intimidation and abuse of power within Malaysia's enforcement agencies. These allegations stand in contrast to police statements claiming that their actions during the rally were fair and justified, further stoking public concern. Speaking on the matter, Syed Saddiq stressed the importance of respecting the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. 'Peaceful protest should be celebrated, not merely tolerated. This isn't just my view, it should be the position of any leader who wants to see Malaysia grow into a mature democracy,' he said when met at the Karangkraf headquarters. He also pointed to the irony of the current administration's stance, noting that many of its leaders were once outspoken supporters of street protests while in the opposition. 'I remember clearly how some of those in power today used to rally for the right to peaceful assembly. "We saw protests happening outside Parliament almost daily. When people are given space to voice their opinions, things stay peaceful,' he said. Syed Saddiq warned that harsh responses by enforcement agencies could inflame tensions unnecessarily. 'When authorities start using force or intimidation, that's when things can spiral. "My hope is for the government to reform the system, revise the laws, and ensure that the authorities handle such situations with greater sensitivity,' he said. More Like This

Prosecution appeals against ex-Malaysian minister Syed Saddiq's acquittal on corruption charges
The intended appeal challenges the Court of Appeal's decision to set aside the conviction of former Malaysian minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on June 25. PHOTO: BERNAMA PETALING JAYA - The prosecution has filed a notice of appeal against the acquittal of former Malaysian minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman on corruption and money laundering charges. The notice was filed on June 26, as stated in a release by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The intended appeal challenges the Court of Appeal's decision to set aside the conviction of the Muar Member of Parliament on June 25. In its unanimous decision, the appellate court allowed the former youth and sports minister's appeal, stating that Mr Syed Saddiq should have been acquitted without his defence being called during the trial. The three-judge Bench concluded that the prosecution failed to prove the elements of the predicate charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust (CBT) and dishonest misappropriation. The court held that Mr Syed Saddiq was legally entitled to the money collected from donors for his political campaign and that allegations of fund misappropriation would not have arisen if the money had been directly deposited into his bank account. The court agreed with Mr Syed Saddiq's defence that the money from public contributions was intended to effectively finance his election campaign and not for Armada Bersatu, his former political party. Mr Syed Saddiq was found guilty by the High Court in November 2023 of abetting in CBT involving more than RM1 million (S$303,300) belonging to Bersatu Youth, and another count of dishonestly misappropriating property totalling more than RM120,000 also belonging to the wing. The former Bersatu Youth chief was also convicted on two counts of money laundering for transferring a total of RM100,000 to his personal account from a company linked to the youth wing, Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise. He was sentenced to three years' jail and one stroke of the cane on the CBT charge, two years and another stroke of the cane on the misappropriation charge, and another two-year jail term for each of the money laundering offences. He was also fined RM10 million. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
