1 big thing: 🐮 The State Fair is a week away
So we meet again, Wednesday. 🌤️ Today's weather: Another hot summer day, with a high in the upper 80s and a chance of thunderstorms. FYI: We could probably copy and paste this forecast for the next week or so. 🎵 Sounds like: " Summer Nights" by Rascal Flatts. Alissa Widman Neese, Tyler Buchanan It's almost time for the Ohio State Fair — where you can pet a kangaroo, watch T-Pain perform and eat deep-fried candy bars all in one day. Why it matters: While revered for its unusual food and entertainment, the fair is much more than that. It draws about a million visitors to Columbus from all 88 counties to celebrate our agricultural roots and unite over summertime traditions. Driving the news: The gates are open next Wednesday morning through Aug. 3. What's new: You'll find those kangaroos and other animals at The Barnyard, a new shaded area featuring the popular petting zoo and pig race attractions. Other debuts include chainsaw carving demonstrations and a free circus, plus axe throwing ($10) and a 200-foot-high slingshot ride ($40). Plus: Two gift shops, eight water bottle filling stations and a north-side entry gate. 🎵 Who's performing: From Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Foreigner to a free Taylor Swift tribute, check out our ranking of this year's lineup. Tickets. Best bites: Several new foods are inspired by 2025's viral flavors, including Dubai chocolate funnel cakes, white cheddar dill pickle cheese curds and a "smashdilla," described as "where a quesadilla and a smash burger fall in love." Schmidt's yearly cream puff is caramel apple. Concession stands offer special $3 items on Thursdays, July 24 and 31. 🤨 Yes, but: We're utterly perplexed by the new buckeye lemonade, "infused with creamy peanut butter and chocolate." What's next: It wouldn't be the State Fair without a Butter Cow. It'll be unveiled Tuesday. Gate hours: 10am–9pm Monday–Friday and 9am–9pm Saturday–Sunday, except the last Sunday, when gates close at 6pm. Map. Daily schedule. $12 adults, $10 kids and seniors at the gate. Kids under 6 free! $10 parking. 🎟️ Ticket pro tips: Buy online before opening day and pay just $8. Discount days are July 28 (adults $10, kids free), July 29 (seniors free) and July 31 (college students $10). Military members, first responders and veterans are free every day with an ID. 2. 😋 Chart du jour: What you can eat on a stick Here's a fun statistic to share with fellow fairgoers: Concession stands will be serving 20 different foods on a stick this year. The intrigue: After crunching the numbers, we've learned that's somehow lower than average over the past four fairs. Zoom in: This year's delicacies include the obvious corn dogs, cotton candy and candy apples, plus oddities like a sausage s'more skewer, fried gator and moonshine chicken. 4. 🪧 "Good Trouble Lives On" protests are coming April Rubin, Alissa Widman Neese Tens of thousands of people are expected to protest the Trump administration again tomorrow, on the fifth anniversary of the death of civil rights leader and former congressman John Lewis. Flashback: Lewis was one of the most vocal critics of President Trump during his first administration. He skipped Trump's 2017 inauguration — only the second Lewis missed during his three-decade tenure in Congress including former President George W. Bush's inauguration in 2001. Zoom in: Local events are scheduled in Delaware, Hilliard, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, Sunbury and in downtown Columbus. 5. 🕵️♀️ Alissa's first geocaching trip Alissa Widman Neese 👋 Alissa here. Inspired by Tyler's adventures in geocaching, I decided to "quickly" investigate a couple caches by my house yesterday. Reality check: I really underestimated how well these things are hidden, and it took me quite a while to find two beginner-level caches. I rage-quit and headed back to my car at both sites, thoroughly convinced the caches must no longer be around. Yes, but: After cooling off, I got back out and persevered, with a little help from their comment logs on the Geocaching website. Disclaimer: I'm going to share two spoilers, if you plan on searching the west side. My first stop: The San Margherita sign near the Belmont House apartments, to find a teeny, tiny magnetic capsule stuck to a park bench's underside, containing a paper log. It's a common tactic, Tyler tells me. He already found that one two weeks ago. The second: The El Vaquero on Riverside Drive, where it was cleverly hidden near the parking lot. I unknowingly circled around forever before finding it. My advice: Do more research than I did about what to expect when searching. I now understand how learning common hiding tactics would definitely help.

20 Problematic Songs From Past 25 Years
"Cool, Daddy Cool" by Kid Rock and Joe C. (2001): The fact that this song appeared on the Osmosis Jones soundtrack, a movie for KIDS, is appalling. Kid Rock clearly sings he likes being with underage girls, and doesn't care if it's considered "statutory rape." To say he's a creep is the understatement of the century. "Bad Guy" by Eminem (2013): Eminem is known for releasing extremely violent, misogynistic, and anti-gay songs for decades. People have argued he's just using his imagination as a songwriter, but in "Bad Guy," he takes it too far and describes in horrific detail how he'd violate someone with a "chloroform rag," among other horrible things. And "Kim" by Eminem (2000): Again, Eminem has a long history of problematic lyrics about women, including his ex-wife, Kim Scott. In "Kim," he fantasizes about kidnapping, abusing, and murdering her. I don't know how this song ever got okayed in the first place. "Try That In A Small Town" by Jason Aldean (2023): It's not just the tough-guy lyrics that are problematic — it's how it leans into a kind of small-town pride that feels more like a threat than a celebration. Even worse? The video was filmed at the Maury County Courthouse, the very spot where, in 1927, black teen Henry Choate was accused (without evidence) of assaulting a white girl and lynched and hanged by a white mob. "Blame It (On the Alcohol)" by Jamie Foxx and T-Pain (2009): The song glamorizes alcohol-fueled hookups in a way that blurs the line around consent, and encourages people to blame reckless behavior on being drunk. The melody is catchy, but if you listen to the words, you'll probably never want to listen to the song again. So I'm here to never listen to this song again. Rick Ross's verse on "U.O.E.N.O." by Rocko (2013): In his verse, Rick Ross describes giving a roofie to a woman, bragging about how he "enjoyed that" (insinuating sex) while she's unconscious. Ross issued an apology after facing backlash for the lyric, but it was initially still okayed by a music label, and for that, it's pretty unforgivable. "Facts" by Tom MacDonald and Ben Shapiro (2024): This 'MAGA rap' track by MacDonald and ring-wing commentator Shapiro attacks progressive culture, They have a "problem" with the LGBTQIA+ community using different pronouns, people being pro-abortion rights instead of anti-abortion, and anything else that a pro-Trump supporter might otherwise "disagree with." "Shut Up and Swallow" by Combichrist (2007): This song seems to revel in a woman's pain while she performs oral sex on a man. He's mad at her for some unknown reason, so he hopes she's "gagging" and "choking" on him ( pretty damn gruesome). "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars (2010): This singer has been a hit machine ever since he came on the scene. But "Runaway Baby" and its implications feel too problematic to ignore. In this song, he wants to be with a girl, by any means necessary, no matter if she's interested or not. And that is NOT okay. "Vultures" by Ye, Ty Dolla Sign, Bump J, and Lil Durk (2023): It's sufficient to say that anything Ye has released in the past seven years is problematic. His verse on "Vultures" speak for themselves — they're deeply anti-semitic, and he doesn't take accountability for being so. "D.R.U.G.S." by Iggy Azalea and YG (2011): Azalea — a white woman — rapping "I'm a runaway slave master, shittin' on the past" is supremely insensitive and racist. It's no wonder this song doesn't hold up today, and frankly, never will. "Ur So Gay" by Katy Perry (2007): There's a crass undertone (or overtone?) in this Katy Perry song because she implies you're "gay" if you're "annoying." It's a limited perspective and disrespects anyone who's in the LGBTQIA+ community. "Grrrls" by Lizzo (2022): Lizzo has since changed the lyrics after facing backlash for using "spaz" in her song. But, it still doesn't ignore the fact that she used it in the first place. "Tron Cat" by Tyler, the Creator (2011): I would argue that a lotttttt of Tyler, the Creator's music is problematic, especially this song. Like Eminem, he describes a beyond baffling situation where he physically abuses a woman, and he'll "get it done" no matter what. "Villuminati" by J. Cole (2013): In this song, J. Cole throws anti-gay slurs around like it's his full-time job. There are at least three instances of a derogatory word used, which obviously didn't need to be a whole dictionary out there, my dude. Use it. "Roman Reloaded" by Nicki Minaj (2012): Minaj casually name-checks the Columbine High School shooting — a national tragedy where children were murdered — to imply she'd kill some "hoes." That should be enough to never want to listen to it ever again. "Let's Get Ret*rded" by the Black Eyed Peas (2004): The problematic nature is in the title itself, disrespecting a community that was notoriously made fun of in the 2000s. The Black Eyed Peas released a clean version, titled "Let's Get It Started," but still — the original version exists, and it definitely doesn't hold up in 2025. "Daughters" by John Mayer (2003): This narrow view of a woman's worth in the world makes "Daughters" just an insufferable song. John Mayer believes that women can only be "mothers" and "lovers," AKA just play a role in relation to a man/someone else. "If I Want To" by Usher (2001): Like "Runaway Baby" by Bruno Mars, this Usher song is a clear sign that a man doesn't care how a woman feels. If he's attracted to her, he will do anything to "make her his," brushing off any "misunderstandings." "If I Want To" is problematic at best. And finally, "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I. (2013): If you're tired of the discourse around this problematic song, then I'm sorry, but.......I'm not sorry. Why? Because Robin Thicke, Pharrell, and T.I. imply that a woman "wants a man" just because she's "paying attention to him." If she's talking to him or dancing with him, he assumes he can "have his way with her." They distract from the disturbing message of this song with a catchy beat, fooling listeners everywhere. A horrible use of lyric and melody, if you ask me. Let's flip the script a little here, folks: What's a problematic song from the '80s and '90s you can't believe was ever recorded? Chris Brown Gives T-Pain His "Flowers" Amid Drake Drama
Source: Getty Images Chris Brown is giving credit where it's due and this time, it's all about T-Pain. But, was it to spite Drake? The R&B star took to his Instagram stories to praise the artist behind hits like 'Bartender,' calling him 'one of the GOATs' of their generation. 'RANDOM THOUGHT… @Tpain is one of the goats of my generation!!!' Brown wrote on his Instagram Story over the weekend. He followed it with another story that read: 'GIVING YOU YOUR FLOWERS!!! PIONEER. LOVE YOU MY BROTHER.' The shoutout comes at an interesting time, as T-Pain's name has been circulating following comments he made about Drake… and Drake's clapback. RELATED: Drake Hits Back At T-Pain Critiquing His Inability To 'Gracefully Bow Out' & Retire, Social Media Piles On In a recent episode of the Crash Dummies podcast, T-Pain reflected on something Drake once said about wanting to bow out of the game gracefully, 'The one thing I learned from Drake — and the one thing he hasn't followed — is his own words. Drake said, 'I want to be one of those people that gracefully bows out and not get kicked out.'' That criticism didn't sit well with Drizzy, of course, who responded by calling out Pain directly. 'This guy always had resentment for me,' Drake posted in an IG comment. 'You can hear it every time he speaks on my name.' While Breezy didn't mention the Drake situation directly, fans were quick to connect the dots. Especially considering his long-running musical history with T-Pain. RELATED: Chris Brown Breezy Bowl: Setlist Still, it hasn't always been all love. Some fans pointed out that T-Pain once called out Chris Brown during a 2022 interview with DJ Akademiks, saying the singer had what he referred to as a 'princess complex.' 'That is my motherf–kin' n—a, but I know what his faults are,' T-Pain said at the time. 'Chris Brown has the princess complex… not only when you get what you want, but when you get accolades for doing absolutely f–king nothing and just being pretty.' Despite that moment of tough love, it's clear Brown holds no grudges. As the back-and-forth between T-Pain and Drake continues to stir opinions, Breezy's IG two cents adds some fuel to the fire. Chris Brown Champions T-Pain as ‘One of the GOATs' & a ‘Pioneer' in Music Following Drake Spat
Chris Brown has come to T-Pain's defense while hailing his 'Kiss Kiss' collaborator as 'one of the GOATs' of his generation a true 'pioneer' in the music game. C. Breezy took to his Instagram Story over the weekend to champion the Florida rapper-singer's greatness after T-Pain's clash with Drake. BTS Gives ARMY 'Permission to Dance' Again With First-Ever Live Album: Here's When It Arrives 'Random thought,' Brown wrote while giving Pain his flowers. '[T-Pain] is one of the GOATs of my generation! Giving you your flowers!!! Pioneer. Love you, my brother.' While Brown claimed it was a 'random thought,' plenty of fans connected his praise for T-Pain to his name rising to the top of the mainstream conversation after Drake responded by taking a shot at the 'Buy U a Drank' artist. Last week, T-Pain was critical of Drake for seemingly not taking his own advice when it comes to having a 'graceful exit' from the rap game. 'The one thing I learned from Drake, here's the crazy thing, the one thing I learned from but one thing he hasn't followed — his own words,' T-Pain told the Crash Dummies Podcast. 'Drake said, 'I want to be one of those people that gracefully bows out and not get kicked out.'' Drake quickly got wind of T-Pain's viral comments and claimed that Pain 'always had resentment' for him, noting, 'you can hear it every time he speaks on my name.' T-Pain and Brown teamed up for their 2007 smash 'Kiss Kiss,' which topped the Billboard Hot 100, and have had a strong bond in the years since. However, following Brown's defense of T-Pain, some Breezy fans recalled that Tallahassee Pain was critical of the R&B singer in 2022 surrounding the reception to his Breezy album, which saw Pain label Brown with having a 'princess complex.' 'That is my motherf–kin' n—a, but I know what his faults are. Chris Brown has the princess complex,' Pain told Akademiks at the time. 'Now, we gon' take this to something that is controversial, but — it's not controversial. … The princess complex is not only when you get what you want, but you get the accolades of a pretty person for doing absolutely f–king nothing and just being pretty.'Best of Billboard Chart Rewind: In 1989, New Kids on the Block Were 'Hangin' Tough' at No. 1 Janet Jackson's Biggest Billboard Hot 100 Hits H.E.R. & Chris Brown 'Come Through' to No. 1 on Adult R&B Airplay Chart
