WI vs AUS 2025 2nd T20: Australia spoil Andre Russell's farewell party, Josh Inglis and Cameron Green give Aussies 2-0 lead
Andre Russell receives a guard of honour in the 2nd T20I match against Australia in Kingston. (Source: X) Andre Russell's final appearance in international cricket ended in disappointment for the all-rounder as well as the West Indies team as they succumbed to an eight-wicket loss in the second T20I match against Australia at the Sabina Park in Kingston on Wednesday. Russell, who was playing his final two T20I matches for West Indies after announcing his retirement last week, ended up on the losing side both times at his home ground in Kingston. In his final innings in international cricket, 'Dre Russ' smashed 36 off 15 balls with four sixes and two fours to power the home side to 172 for 8 after they were struggling at 98 for 5 at one stage in the second T20I match. However, the 173-run target wasn't enough for Mitchell Marsh's side as they overhauled the target with more than 4 overs to spare for the loss of just 2 wickets. WATCH Andre Russell's last walk in international cricket HERE… Dre Russ takes his final walk in the Maroon🌴 , honored by teammates, hailed by fans🙌🏾 and etched forever in West Indies Cricket Legend.🏏✌🏾💥 #WIvAUS | #DreDay | #FullAhEnergy — Windies Cricket (@windiescricket) July 23, 2025 Josh Inglis and Cameron Green set a new record for Aussies in T20I cricket – putting on the highest third-wicket partnership for Australia in this format. Inglis and Green posted unbeaten 131 runs to surpass 118 runs put on by Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell. Inglis remained unbeaten on 78 from 33 balls while Green scored his second successive T20I fifty, was 56 off 32 balls. Green had also scored a half-century on Sunday in Australia's three-wicket win to open the series. The back-to-back wins at Sabina Park extended Australia's winning streak to five in the Caribbean following the 3-0 Test series sweep. Andre Russell's last show In his last innings in international cricket, the Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder was at his vintage best, the kind of shot-making which helped him win two T20 World Cups and star in domestic T20 leagues around the world. The 37-year-old all-rounder went in at 98 for 5 and dominated a 41-run sixth-wicket stand with Rovman Powell. Russell clobbered sixes on three of the first four balls off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over, going down the ground over the sightscreen, top-edging over the wicketkeeper and hitting over the midwicket boundary. In another over against leg-spinner Adam Zampa, Russell cut for four and then hoisted the next ball into the second tier of the stadium for six. The onslaught put so much pressure on Zampa that the experienced Australian spinner bowled consecutive wides. The all-rounder was retained for Rs 12 crore by Shah Rukh Khan's KKR ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction last year. Russell turned out in 1 Test, 56 ODIs and 85 T20 games for the West Indies. He scored 1034 ODI runs at a strike-rate of 130.22 and 1086 T20I runs with strike-rate of 162.08. He also claimed 70 ODI and 62 T20I wickets. 'I just want to say thanks again. I'm very grateful to end my career here. I played in front of my home crowd, family and friends. The result didn't go my way, but at the end of the day, I'm happy and grateful. The crowd has been amazing in the last two games,' Russell said in the post-match presentation. 'I really appreciate it. We tried our best. I feel like it's time for me to just hang it up, and wish the boys all the best moving forward. I'm very grateful for this amazing international career finishing at Sabina Park,' he added. Both teams had formed a guard of honor for Russell to walk onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted his back as he walked back to the pavilion following his innings. The Australian bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings, with Zampa taking 3 for 29, Glenn Maxwell returning 2/15 and Nathan Ellis finishing with 2/34. For the West Indies, some sloppy fielding, including at least five dropped catches, hurt their chances of defending the total. The T20I series moves to St. Kitts for the next three games on Friday, Saturday and Monday with Australia leading 2-0.

Russell's sparkling farewell in vain as Australia sprint to T20 win
The 37-year-old all-rounder was unable to script a fairytale farewell to his glittering T20 career, but departed to a standing ovation on his home Sabina Park ground after hitting four trademark sixes and two fours. Batting at number seven in his 85th and last T20 international, Russell's cameo, plus a late flurry from Gudakesh Motie (18 off nine balls) added to 51 from opener Brandon King enabled the hosts to score 172-8 off their 20 overs. But a record 131-run stand by Josh Inglis, who made 78 not out, and Cameron Green (56 not out) saw Australia race to an eight-wicket win with more than four overs to spare. It was Australia's highest third-wicket partnership in Twenty20 internationals and, aided by six dropped catches by West Indies fielders, gave the visitors a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. Inglis hit seven fours and five sixes while Green was barely more sedate, clearing the ropes four times and stroking three fours in his second consecutive fifty. "I didn't want to finish on a losing note," said Russell, whose spectacular final knock had briefly thrilled his hometown crowd. "I enjoy seeing the ball go over the ropes," he added. "As a kid you dream about playing here. Thanks to all the fans who came out to support me." Russell, who was given a guard of honour before the match by both teams, played just one Test match. It was as a Twenty20 specialist that he made his name, winning the T20 World Cup twice with the West Indies in 2012 and 2016. A more than lively seam bowler, Russell's free-scoring late-order batting and athletic fielding saw him sought after by T20 leagues around the world. He has been with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL since 2014, scoring more than 2,400 runs. © 2025 AFP

Inglis and Green lead Australia to victory, spoiling Andre Russell's last game for West Indies
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Josh Inglis and Cameron Green combined in a record partnership for Australia to ensure 'Dre Day' at Sabina Park didn't end in a victory for West Indies Twenty20 cricket great Andre Russell. After plundering four big sixes and scoring 36 off 15 balls before he skied a top edge that ended his last international innings, Russell had to wait and see if a total of 172-8 would be enough for West Indies to hold off Australia on Tuesday. Not quite. The Australians reached 173-2 and completed an eight-wicket win with almost five overs to spare to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 series. Inglis was unbeaten on 78 from 33 balls and Green was 56 off 32 balls, the pair sharing a 131-run stand, an Australian T20 record for the third wicket. Green also scored a half-century on Sunday in Australia's three-wicket win to open the series. The back-t-back wins at Sabina Park extended Australia's streak to five in the Caribbean following the 3-0 test series sweep. Russell's last stand His last innings in international cricket was vintage Dre Rus, the kind of shotmaking that helped him win two T20 World Cups and star in domestic T20 leagues around the world. The 37-year-old allrounder went with the total at 98-5 and dominated a 41-run sixth-wicket stand with Rovman Powell. Russell clobbered sixes on three of the first four balls off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over, going down the ground over the site screen, top-edging over the wicketkeeper and hitting over the midwicket boundary. He didn't wear a helmet when he went out to bat, so the trademark dyed blond stripe down the middle of his head was visable most of his innings. In one over against Adam Zampa, Russell cut for four and then hoisted the next ball into the second tier of the stadium for six. The onslaught put so much pressure on Zampa that the experienced Australian spinner bowled consecutive wides. Eventually, though, Russell put on a protective helmet. Soon after, he mis-timed a slower ball from Nathan Ellis and his edge went high into the air before it was gloved by Inglis. Both teams had formed a guard of honor for Russell to walk onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted his back as he walked back to the pavilion following his innings. 'The result didn't go my way, but I'm happy and grateful,' Russell said in a post-game TV interview. "I really appreciate the fans who turned out and showed the love. Sorry the result didn't go our way. 'I feel like it's time for me to hang it up and wish the guys the best of luck moving forward.' The Australian bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings, with Zampa taking 3-29, Glenn Maxwell returning 2-15 and Ellis finishing with 2-34. For the West Indies, some sloppy fielding, including at least five dropped catches, hurt their chances of defending the total. The series moves to St. Kitts for the next three games on Friday, Saturday and Monday. ___ AP cricket:
