Amir, Hasan shine in Vitality Blast

Mohammad Amir was in action for Essex in the Vitality Blast. photo: file Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir delivered a stellar performance to lead Essex to a comprehensive six-wicket victory over Sussex in their Vitality Blast clash here at Chelmsford on Friday. Sussex captain Tymal Mills won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that backfired as the team was bowled out for 145 in 18.2 overs. Wicketkeeper-batter John Simpson top-scored with an impressive 52 off just 28 balls, laced with four sixes and three fours. Daniel Hughes also made a useful contribution, scoring 27 from 15 balls with one six and five boundaries. Danny Lamb added 19 runs, while Tom Alsop and Harrison Ward chipped in with 13 and nine runs respectively. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to fire, with seven Sussex batters unable to reach double figures. Essex's bowling attack was spearheaded by Mohammad Amir, who returned exceptional figures of 3/16 in his three overs. He was well supported by Sam Cook, Shane Snater and Simon Harmer, who each picked up two wickets to dismantle the Sussex batting order. In reply, Essex chased down the 146-run target with ease, reaching 150/4 in just 16.1 overs. Opener Michael Pepper was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 87 off 47 deliveries, featuring two sixes and 14 boundaries in a dominant display. He was ably supported by Luke Benkenstein (25) and Charlie Allison (24), while the rest of the batters contributed minimally. Paul Walter (five), Jordan Cox (four) and Matt Critchley (three) all fell cheaply, but their dismissals had little impact on the outcome. Sussex's bowling effort was led by Tymal Mills, who took 2/31 runs in his four overs. Nathan Andrew and Henry Crocombe claimed one wicket each, but Essex comfortably crossed the finish line with nearly four overs to spare. Clinical Hassan Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali delivered a match-winning bowling performance to lead Birmingham Bears to a 23-run victory over Worcestershire in a thrilling T20 Vitality Blast fixture at the County Ground in Worcester on Friday. Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bowl first. Bears, batting first, posted a competitive total of 176 runs before being bowled out in 19.5 overs. The innings was anchored by Sam Hain, who scored a steady 44 off 35 balls, hitting five boundaries. George Garton added crucial runs late in the innings with an unbeaten 36 off just 22 deliveries, which included three sixes and a four, while Dan Mousley contributed a quickfire 31 from 17 balls, featuring a six and four boundaries. Additional support came from Alex Davies (19) and Ed Barnard (23), although the lower order faltered, with Hasan Ali, Tom Latham and Danny Briggs each scoring just one run. Worcestershire's bowling attack was led by Ben Dwarshuis, who claimed 3/30 runs in his four overs. Pakistan's Khurram Shehzad also made an impact, picking up 2/34 runs in 3.5 overs. Tom Taylor, Adam Finch and Fateh Singh chipped in with a wicket apiece. Chasing 177, Worcestershire were bowled out for 153 runs in 19.3 overs, falling short despite a valiant half-century from Adam Hose, who scored 51 off 36 balls, including two sixes and five fours. Gareth Roderick (30) and Isaaq Mohammed (25) provided brief resistance, but the rest of the batting lineup collapsed under pressure, with six batters failing to reach double figures. Hasan Ali was the standout performer with the ball, finishing with 3/32 in four overs, applying consistent pressure throughout his spell. Danny Briggs matched his figures with 3/37, while Craig Miles picked up two wickets and Richard Gleeson claimed one.

Five for McAndrew as Sussex turn on the Blast style at Hove

Sussex Sharks consigned Glamorgan to a chastening defeat at Hove in the T20 Vitality Blast. Half centuries from Tom Alsop and James Coles set up a commanding total, before Nathan McAndrew blew through a shell-shocked Glamorgan batting line-up to seal victory by 78 runs. Advertisement It leaves Sussex on three wins from four games as they make a strong start in the short format. After Sussex won the toss and elected to bat, Dan Hughes fell for one after slashing at a wider delivery from seamer Jamie McIlroy, skewing it to short third man where van der Gugten took a sharp catch. Fellow opener Harrison Ward came out with plenty of positive intent, sweeping off spinner Ben Kellaway's first ball for six, and striking two fours and a flat, square six off seamer Dan Douthwaite's first over. He fell for an enterprising 38 from 23, skying Mason Crane's second ball, with Kiran Karlson running backwards from mid off and taking an excellent catch. Advertisement John Simpson looked like he was trying to anchor the Sussex innings, but fell lbw to Kellaway for 26 from 23 balls after missing an attempted sweep. Coles came out the blocks quickly, plundering a four and six from consecutive Crane deliveries, and reaching 50 in just 33 deliveries. Alsop continued his good recent form, striking sixes with ease down the ground and over mid wicket. He brought up a rapid half century from only 26 balls, before hitting McIlroy straight to long on, departing for exactly 50. Andy Gorvin's deceptive dibbly-dobblers proved difficult to get away, with the medium pacer conceding only 26 from his four overs, including just a single boundary, but Dan Douthwaite was expensive, leaking 48 from three overs. Advertisement Coles finished the innings in style, hitting the final ball for six to finish 75 not out, setting Glamorgan 195 to win. A short ball from Ollie Robinson brought the first wicket, with Kiran Carlson only able to plink it to Coles at midwicket, falling for 12 from 12. Kelleway showed that he wasn't going to hang around, hitting his second ball from Robinson down the ground for six off, but then clipped McAndrew straight to Tom Clark at deep fine leg, departing for ten. The excitement in the ground rose when Colin Ingram was then dismissed first ball, getting a fine edge on an unexpected bouncer, leaving McAndrew on a hat-trick. Advertisement Chris Cooke almost gave the crowd the moment of ecstasy they craved, but the hat-trick ball flew just past his outside edge. Concluding the powerplay on 46-3, Glamorgan were already on the back foot and needing to play catch up. Instead, their fourth wicket fell to Coles' off spin, with a full looping delivery that yorked the disappointed looking Smale, who fell for 19 from 18. Things only got worse for the Welsh outfit when Cooke nicked behind off McAndrew in the next over, before Douthwaite was clean bowled by another McAndrew beauty that clipped the top of middle stump three deliveries later. Unbelievably, McAndrew once again found himself on a potential hat-trick when Timm Van der Gutgen spliced his first ball to Alsop at point, with Glamorgan having lost two wickets with the score on 40, two on 47, and two on 49. Advertisement McAndrew's second hat-trick ball passed without drama, but the Australian seamer ended with the spectacular figures of 5-12. Crane (25 off 19) and Asa Tribe (34 off 21) tried to get their team towards a respectable total, but it was too little, too late, and Glamorgan suffered a brutal defeat after being bowled out for 117, with McAndrew the star of the show.

James Anderson makes T20 return after 3935 days, returns with career-best figures

It might be nearly 11 years since he last appeared in a competitive T20 cricket match, but when you're James Anderson, everything you touch tends to turn to gold. Representing Lancashire in the T20 Vitality Blast, Anderson marked his return to the shortest format of the game with a performance that rolled back the clock, taking his best-ever figures of 3-17 in his team's victory against Durham. Anderson hadn't played T20 cricket since August 2014, a span of nearly 4000 days, and will celebrate a full year since his international retirement next month. However, even at the age of 42, Anderson looked like his old self, as he bowled three overs up front in the powerplay against Durham. In those three overs at Riverside Ground at Chester-le-Street, Anderson accounted for the wickets of both Durham openers, Alex Lees and Graham Clark. Extracting plenty of movement and bite, Anderson took 2-15 in the powerplay, and returned in the 11th over to add a third wicket, dismissing Colin Ackermann to finish with figures of 3-17. This was Anderson's best figures in T20 cricket, improving on his figures of 3-23, which came in a T20I game for England against the Netherlands, all the way back in 2009. That was the last year in which Anderson represented England in T20 cricket. Anderson took his first wicket in his second over, bouncing back having conceded a six and a four in the first three deliveries to dismiss Clark. Anderson dismissed the entirety of Durham's top three, a bowling effort that ensured the hosts were only able to score 150 on the day. Anderson's contribution was important, too, as a spirited Durham bowling effort meant that it took Lancashire the entirety of their 20 overs to chase down the target of 151. It was a marked improvement on the last time Anderson played in a T20 game, which saw him concede 52 runs for no wickets against Warwickshire during the 2024 Blast final. Anderson's return saw Lancashire rise to a third win in a row to start off their Vitality Blast campaign, a perfect record thus far after already having beaten Worcestershire and dismantled Nottinghamshire in their first two matches of the season.

Sharks get the job done in a hurry as they make it two from two in Blast

Sussex claimed a swift and comfortable T20 Vitality Blast home victory over last year's champions Gloucestershire, winning by 80 runs as Tom Alsop and James Coles set up a commanding total, with skipper Tymal Mills claiming three wickets. After being put in to bat, Sussex started brightly, with opener Daniel Hughes twice finding the boundary in the first over. Advertisement Fellow opener Harrison Ward fell for one in the second over, clean bowled by the off-spin of Ollie Price after going back and trying to cut a straight delivery which wasn't that short. Hughes kept his foot on the gas, hitting powerfully down the ground and square of the wicket, before tamely chipping a short delivery from Price into the hands of James Taylor at mid-off for 35 from 19. Hammond took a wonderful diving catch in the sixth over to dismiss John Simpson for eight off the bowling of Taylor, and the Sharks finished the powerplay on 53-3. James Coles started slowly, but Alsop hit both of his first two balls for four and didn't look back, thumping Tom Smith back over his head for the first six of the innings in the 11th over, and managing to hit the clock face above the scoreboard with another huge blow shortly after. Advertisement Coles got in on the act too, twice hitting Taylor over the square leg boundary in the 13th, almost striking the clock himself. Alsop reached his 50 from 30 in the 14th over, and the pair brought up their 100 partnership in the 15th. Sussex were well on top by this point, but David Payne seemed to have swung momentum back in Gloucestershire's favour when he dismissed Alsop (58 off 35) and then Coles (43 off 27) in the 16th over - Alsop stretching for a wide slower ball and looping it to short third man, Coles pulling a shortish delivery straight to mid wicket, leaving the Sharks 149-5. No subsequent batter could add more than ten runs to the total in the remaining four overs. Advertisement Smith took an amazing caught and bowled after Tom Clark smashed one back towards his face for two, and Jack Carson holed out at long on off Aman Rao's bowling, just after hitting an impressive pull shot over square leg for six. Nathan McAndrew was also caught on the boundary, becoming Payne's third wicket in an outstanding spell of 4-24 in his four overs. Tom Alsop adds to his tally (Image: Simon Dack) Ollie Robinson tried a few scoops, but eventually lobbed one straight to the keeper for six, and skipper Tymal Mills was out off the final ball of the innings, caught for one off the bowling of Taylor, with Sussex setting Gloucestershire a target of 174 to win. That seemed at the halfway point just above a par score, on a good wicket with a lightning outfield. Advertisement However, it became apparent quite quickly that Sussex's total would be far out of Gloucestershire's reach. Robinson showed his class with a high quality opening spell, clean bowling Australian opener Bancroft for seven in the third over with a world class delivery that kissed the top of off stump. He was very unfortunate not to have Price in the third over with lbw and, by the time Robinson had completed his third over, Gloucestershire were 29-2, with Currie having removed D'arcy Short for a duck. Hammond looked good for 24, but when he fell to Mills in the final over of the powerplay, Gloucestershire looked in trouble at 34-3. Advertisement Bracey looked in decent nick but also couldn't get past 24, joint top-scoring with Hammond. Mills bamboozled the lower order with his slower deliveries, finishing with 3-13, but everyone chipped in with Coles and Carson picking up two wickets each, and McAndrew claiming another. Gloucestershire were dismissed for 93 in the 14th over, with Sussex winning by a huge 80 runs.
