Teoh family reciprocates DAP leaders' bow, thanks supporters

The family of Teoh Beng Hock and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement bowing at a public memorial to Teoh Beng Hock organised by the association. KUALA LUMPUR : The family of the late Teoh Beng Hock bowed tonight in response to a public apology by DAP leaders on Thursday. Beng Hock's parents, sister Lee Lan and members of the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) lined up and bowed at a public memorial organised by the association. 'We, the family of Teoh Beng Hock, and the TBH-ADA will return a bow of courtesy. 'We bow to every individual, every organisation, every party and person who have stood with us in this long struggle. 'We thank you for your unwavering solidarity. We believe your support was granted not in pity or charity, but in a shared expectation of justice,' said an emcee. The memorial marks the 16th anniversary of Beng Hock's death. On Thursday, DAP leaders bowed in 'respect and sorrow' to the family, acknowledging they had been let down by investigations into the former political aide's death. DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, vice-chairman Teo Nie Ching, Selangor DAP chief Ng Sze Han and Teoh's former boss, Ean Yong Hian Wah, bowed for about a minute at the end of a press conference at DAP's headquarters. The day before, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki apologised to the family and said the agency was prepared to provide them with a goodwill contribution. Beng Hock, who was 30, was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers at the Selangor MACC headquarters. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that the death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. In May, former inspector-general of police Razarudin Husain confirmed that the investigation paper on Beng Hock's death was classified as needing no further action, after the Attorney-General's Chambers said it found insufficient evidence to bring charges.

Teoh Beng Hock group seeks to raise RM50,000 for UN advocacy trip

PETALING JAYA : The Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA) is seeking to raise RM50,000 to fund Teoh Lee Lan's advocacy trip to Geneva, where she plans to meet United Nations officials to press for greater accountability over her brother's death. TBH-ADA president Ng Yap Hwa said a formal complaint was filed yesterday with three top officials at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The complaint was lodged with Morris Tidball-Binz, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Alice Jill Edwards, UN special rapporteur on torture; and Ganna Yudkivska, president of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. 'This is not just about putting public pressure on the government, but it is to ensure the government fulfils its international obligations (as a UN member),' Ng told a press conference today. 'The government should not wait until the international community scrutinises this case for them to do their due diligence.' Lee Lan said it was disheartening that the family had to seek international intervention after years of unanswered questions from the government. TBH-ADA had been organising forums throughout the country to rally public pressure on Beng Hock's death probe, which was classified as requiring no further action (NFA) by the Attorney‑General's Chambers because of insufficient evidence. Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers from the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that his death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers. Before 2018, two special investigation teams had been set up to look into the incident – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. A reinvestigation was ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, directing the police to re-examine all aspects of the case.

Civil society groups plan nationwide forums to protest Teoh Beng Hock NFA

(TBH-ADA pic) PETALING JAYA : A coalition of civil society groups will kick off a series of nationwide forums to protest the police's decision to classify the death of Teoh Beng Hock as requiring no further action (NFA). The campaign, led by the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement (TBH-ADA), aims to rally public pressure on the government to address long-standing concerns over the former political aide's death in 2009. 'We sincerely urge all justice-loving citizens, civil society and political activists to attend the forums. 'Let us resist forgetting, rekindle memory, and call back justice together,' the group said in a statement after announcing the forums at a press conference today. TBH-ADA said the campaign is anchored on three key demands – an independent international investigation into Teoh's death, prosecution of those responsible under murder or culpable homicide laws, and urgent institutional reforms to prevent future custodial deaths. The first forum will be held in Penang on June 22, followed by another in Melaka on July 11. More forums are in the pipeline. The group said the Teoh family remains steadfast in demanding accountability and will not let the matter fade from public memory. 'Forgetting is democracy's greatest enemy. It allows deaths to be normalised and broken promises to be forgiven. 'Redressing Beng Hock's death is not just justice for one family. Teoh Beng Hock has become a symbol of custodial death in detention centres,' it said. Earlier this month, the Attorney-General's Chambers said it found insufficient evidence to bring charges following a fresh investigation by police into Teoh's death, thus maintaining its NFA classification. The re-investigation had been ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in November last year, which directed police to re-examine all aspects of the case. Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 after falling from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, Selangor, after being questioned for several hours by officers at the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters. An inquest into his death initially returned an open verdict. However, in 2014, the Court of Appeal ruled that the death was caused by 'one or more unknown persons', including MACC officers.
