Tesla Model Y boosts sales in Norway and Spain amid European challenges
TESLA'S sales rose in Norway and Spain during June, an early sign that some are buying its revamped Model Y vehicle even as the EV maker struggles with the fallout from CEO Elon Musk's politics and competition from European and Chinese brands. Tesla sales also rose in Portugal, though it was not immediately clear from data provided by the country's automobile industry association ACAP whether that was due to the new Model Y. However, sales dropped for a sixth straight month in France, Sweden, Denmark and Italy, underlining the challenges still facing the company, which is expected to report another fall in quarterly deliveries on Wednesday. Tesla had seen sales plunge in recent months to multi-year lows in its key European markets as Musk's relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump and embrace of far-right politics in Europe led to protests against his company, as well as vandalism at its showrooms and charging stations. According to Schmidt Automotive data, Tesla has suffered six straight year-on-year losses in quarterly new registration volumes across Western Europe. The second quarter of 2025 is 'looking like it could be a consecutive seventh,' Schmidt said. While Tesla began taking orders for the new Model Y months ago, it only started delivering the car to customers in many European markets in June. In Norway, the first deliveries were in May when the company saw a spike in sales. In June, Tesla saw a strong increase in car registrations in Norway and Spain, lifted by both the old and new versions of the Model Y. In Norway, Tesla recorded a 54% year-on-year increase in car registrations. Model Y registrations rose 115.3% on a yearly basis to 5,004 units. 'This is a demonstration of power by Tesla. After so much turmoil surrounding owner and frontman Elon Musk, they manage to achieve this result. It's impressive,' said Erik Lorentzen, head of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association. In Spain, Tesla sales increased 60.7% in June to 2,632 units. Sales of the Model Y vehicle increased by 127.2% to 1,179 units. In Portugal, Tesla's sales rose 7.3% in June. 'Significant percentage changes often hide small numbers, and some European markets only have hundreds or low thousands of sales each month, which can be impacted by logistics, stock levels, and new product launches,' said Andy Leyland, co-founder of supply chain specialist SC Insights. In Sweden, Tesla's registrations fell 64.4% in June from a year earlier. Tesla's sales were also down 61.6% in Denmark, where sales of its new Model Y fell 31.2% compared with last year to 1,155 cars, showing no signs of reviving the brand's fortunes. The EV maker's sales fell 10% in France and 66% in Italy, where fully-electric car sales jumped 117% in June. Tesla has not launched a new mainstream model since 2020, while traditional automakers are rushing to produce more affordable electric cars and Chinese rivals, such as BYD, are rapidly taking market share. 'A new model update is the classic extension strategy for a product that is used to inflate a product's lifecycle, giving a short-term bounce,' said Matthias Schmidt of Schmidt Automotive. The publication of Tesla's monthly car registration figures coincided with a renewal of a dispute between Musk and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a sweeping tax-cut and spending bill. Shares in Tesla were down 5.3% in afternoon trading.

The automaker, which has been losing market share in part because of CEO Elon Musk's embrace of far-right politics in Europe, sold 1,758 units in Britain last month, down from 3,244 a year earlier, the data showed. Yet, Tesla remained the best-selling battery electric vehicle in Britain so far this year. Overall new car registrations in the UK increased 4.3% to 144,098 units in May, according to New AutoMotive, with BEV sales rising 28% year-on-year. Among Chinese rivals, BYD more than doubled its new car sales in the UK to 1,388 units during the month.

New Model Y boosts Norway deliveries but fails to stem Tesla's European sales rout
TESLA'S car sales fell sharply in several European markets, including Sweden and Portugal, last month, a fifth consecutive monthly decline that has been blamed on chief executive officer (CEO) Elon Musk's political activities and an outdated model lineup. However, Norway, where Tesla has started delivering revamped versions of its midsize sport utility vehicle (SUV) Model Y, provided a lone bright spot for the company as it prepares to roll out the refreshed vehicle in more European markets from this month. Tesla has not launched a new mainstream model since 2020, while traditional carmakers are rushing to produce more affordable electric vehicles (EVs) and Chinese rivals like BYD have entered the European marketplace. In Sweden, Tesla's new car sales plunged 53.7 per cent last month from a year earlier, and in Portugal they were down 68 per cent. However, overall EV sales in both markets rose by almost a quarter last month. Tesla's sales were also down 30.5 per cent in Denmark, 36 per cent in the Netherlands and 19 per cent in Spain, while data from PFA in France released on Sunday showed a 67 per cent fall. In Norway, sales jumped 213 per cent last month, data from the Norwegian Road Federation showed, with purchases of Model Ys — both the new and old versions — rising to 2,346 units from 690. "Tesla's strong performance in Norway points to the way forward for the company: innovate," said Ben Nelmes, founder of EV data analysis firm New AutoMotive. "No car company can rest on its laurels and be guaranteed success." Buyers can already order a new Model Y across much of Europe, but Tesla's websites in Germany, Britain, France and Italy say estimated deliveries of the lowest-cost version — its biggest seller historically — will only start this month, so have yet to show up in sales data. Tesla has also been offering financial incentives for purchases in Sweden, Germany, Britain and France in a bid to drum up demand. In Norway, it is offering interest-free loans for the new Model Y. Quentin Wilson, founder of EV lobby group FairCharge, said Tesla's price cuts were stimulating sales, but with only the Model Y and Model 3 selling in large volumes, "things aren't looking great for the future of the brand". Musk's close alliance with United States President Donald Trump and his embrace of far-right politics in Europe have led to protests against the billionaire CEO and his company, as well as vandalism at its showrooms and charging stations across the US and Europe. Musk left the Trump administration last week, saying he would devote more of his time to running the carmaker. The Model Y was Europe's best-selling car in 2023 but Tesla now faces more intense competition in a number of markets. In Sweden, for example, sales of Volkswagen's electric ID.7 were almost twice those of the Model Y. Tesla's mass-market Model 3 was also outsold in Sweden by electric models including Porsche's Macan, BYD's Seal and the G6 from Chinese EV maker Xpeng.
