Lens & order: Cameras snap 3.6k eway violations in 5 days in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: City cops have issued 3,600 traffic violation challans from July 10 to July 15 on the Dwarka and Delhi-Gurgaon expressways, using 15 newly installed ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) cameras. The enforcement drive, which began on July 10, has targeted violations such as speeding, lack of helmets, triple-riding, wrong-side driving, and unauthorised vehicle entry. According to police data, out of the total 3,600 challans, the highest number, 2,500, were issued for driving without a seat belt. Additionally, 650 challans were issued for not wearing helmets, 250 for overspeeding, 90 for no entry by slow-moving vehicles such as bikes and auto-rickshaws, 85 for triple riding, and nine for wrong-side driving on these two busy national expressways. "We had already alerted the public that we would start sending e-tickets or postal challans for the violations captured through the ANPR cameras on these two national expressways from July 10. Unfortunately, many commuters continue to risk lives by dangerous driving. Our aim is to curb such driving to save precious lives, and thus challenging will be more rigorous in the coming days through the CCTVs," ASI Vikas Verma, traffic police spokesperson, stated. He added that slow-moving vehicles should strictly refrain from using Dwarka Expressway to avoid accidents. Additionally, NHAI installed 110 traffic monitoring cameras (TMCs) to assist the agency in removing vehicles from these highways in case of breakdowns. Notably, in June, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) requested the Gurgaon traffic police to restrict slow-moving vehicles on NH48 (Delhi-Jaipur highway) from Sirhaul border to Kherki Daula toll plaza and on Dwarka Expressway from Kherki Daula to Delhi border. These restrictions required banned vehicles to use the service roads, which the traffic police enforced on June 25. However, numerous restricted vehicles can still be frequently observed using these roads. NHAI's directives aimed to prevent accidents on the two major national highways. The speed limit for cars was set at 80 km/h, while trucks had to adhere to a 60 km/h limit on NH48.

Workers' union to challenge fresh postings in KMC, TMCs

SIDCL had now been transferred to the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives. PHOTO: FILE A representative body of workers in the local bodies has decided to approach the court over dubious appointments and postings in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs). Sajjan Union said trainee officers have been appointed on senior posts while many senior officers have been sidelined and forced to stay home. Sajjan Union Central President Syed Zulfikar Shah has directed the union's legal team to prepare a petition for filing in the court against the illegal recruitments, adjustments, and postings in KMC and TMCs over the past three months. In a statement issued on Thursday, he said that the legal discourse will be taken without bias, regardless of whether it affects any union official, worker, leader, or their family member. Shah said that the Sindh government has recruited municipal commissioners, accounts officers, and engineers through the Sindh Public Service Commission and appointed them to senior positions despite them still being under training. This has resulted in senior officers being sidelined. A petition is being prepared against these trainee officers, which will be filed in court along with the affected officers. The union is also working towards implementing a court judgment that requires the deployment of Grade 19 SCUG officers and later Grade 18 officers, after removing Municipal Commissioners appointed in Grade 17 without an approved Schedule of Establishment. Affected officers have been asked to contact the union immediately.

Gas utility says not at fault for dug up roads

An inter-ministerial meeting decided that SSGC should hand over required PSM land to the new LNG terminal developers. PHOTO: rEUTERS The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has disbursed Rs11.9 billion to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and various Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) for road-cutting and rehabilitation during a period from July 2024 to June 2025. The gas utility was under fire from political and civic circles for digging up roads for laying pipelines, however, SSGC sources said that the company had made timely disbursment of the mandatory road cutting charges. It was the reposnsiblity of the matropolitan and town corportations to utilise these funds in a justified manner, they said. According to the data, released by the SSGC, the gas utility made the highest payments of Rs3.55 billion to TMC North Karachi and TMC North Nazimabad. TMC Model Colony received the second-highest payment of Rs2.10 billion. Other payments included Rs1 billion to TMC Lyari, Rs7.3 million to TMC Jinnah, and Rs6.2 million to TMC Malir. The data further revealed that TMC Saddar and Chensar each received Rs260 million, while TMC Landhi was paid Rs210 million. The SSGC paid Rs490 million to the KMC for road-cutting and restoration works. The lowest amount of Rs0.227 million was paid to TMC Gulshan. Despite these massive disbursements totaling over Rs11 billion, the roads across Karachi remain in disrepair. Interestingly, SSGC never issued even a single protest letter to any TMC over their failure to restore the roads, nor did its legal department sign any binding agreement before releasing such a huge amount. Sources further disclosed that SSGC did not obtain any formal assurance from TMCs that the roads would be rebuilt after payments. However, due to the public outrage following the recent downpours, SSGC has now initiated the process of drafting protest letters to KMC and the concerned TMCs, questioning why roadworks have not been completed despite receiving the huge payments. SSGC insiders expressed concern, saying, "If the company aggressively protests or takes legal action, it may face complications in acquiring road-cutting permissions in the future from these municipal bodies."

Harish Rao seeks apex council meet on APRA violations

Hyderabad: Complimenting Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy for his strong letter to the Union Jal Shakti Ministry objecting to Andhra Pradesh's Banakacherla Project, senior BRS leader Harish Rao has suggested that the Irrigation Minister press the Centre to convene an Apex Council meeting to discuss violations of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014. The BRS leader addressed a letter to the Irrigation Minister on Sunday, requesting him to convene an all party meeting or a special session of the Assembly to discuss the issue and formulate a policy decision. Mr Rao stated that, as per the Godavari Tribunal Award, engineers during the undivided Andhra Pradesh period had asserted the state should receive 1,480 TMC of water, with Telangana projects being allocated 969 TMCs through various Government Orders. However, due to a lack of project construction and several projects still being under construction, Telangana's utilisation had never even reached 200 TMCs. He noted that the previous BRS government stabilised 19 lakh acres and also provided water to one lakh acres by undertaking barrages such as Sadarmat, Sundila, Annaram, Medigadda, Sammakkasagar, and Sitarammasagar in the Godavari basin. Mr Rao warned that with the Andhra Pradesh government attempting to draw 200 TMCs from the Godavari, Telangana stands to lose out. He recalled that even before the formation of the Godavari Tribunal, the AP government aimed to complete the Banakacherla project to divert 200 TMCs. He urged the Minister to hold discussions with engineers and make a favourable decision for Telangana.
