R Ashwin of ball tampering charges, TNPL warns disciplinary action for ‘baseless or defamatory allegations'

Ravichandran Ashwin and his Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) side Dindigul Dragons have been cleared of ball-tampering by the league. It also gave the Madurai Panthers, who made the accusation, the option of requesting an independent enquiry into the incident while warning them that they will face disciplinary action if their allegations turn out to be baseless. Madurai had alleged that Dindigul used towels treated with chemicals that resulted in the ball getting heavier and produced metallic sound when it came into contact with the bat. 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' the TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan said in a statement. 'The Playing Control Team-including umpires and the match referee-maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.' The match in question started after a brief delay following a short downpour in Salem, following which Madurai batted first and made 150/8 in 20 overs, which Dindigul overhauled in 12.3 overs and 9 wickets to spare. Ashwin had gone wicketless with the ball before scoring 49 as an opener. The tournament itself has been hampered by rain as it coincides with the monsoon season in Tamil Nadu. Factoring in the damp conditions, The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association provides towels to each of the franchises and players are allowed to use it to dry the ball only in front of the umpires. 'They have to dry the ball only using the towels provided by TNPL. And every time the ball is hit for a six or immediately after a dismissal and over-break, umpires regularly check the ball and they didn't find any issue with the ball during the said match,' Kannan had earlier told the Indian Express. If the franchise still wants to pursue the matter, the TNPL said that they can go for an independent enquiry but a formal request for the same has to be raised by 3pm IST on Tuesday. 'Should the franchise possess credible and verifiable evidence, they may submit a formal request for an Independent Commission of Enquiry by 3 PM on 17th June, along with supporting material (video, photographic, or testimonial),' it said. It then stated: 'TNCA cautions that baseless or defamatory allegations may lead to disciplinary action under the TNCA Code of Conduct and Operational Rules.'

Controversy avoided! R Ashwin, team cleared of ball-tampering allegations in TNPL

R Ashwin and Varun Chakravarthy celebrates a wicket in TNPL. Former India cricketer R Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering allegations in the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). Ashwin-led Dindigul Dragons had been accused of tampering with the ball during their match against Siechem Madurai Panthers. The Madurai franchise alleged that Dindigul tampered with the ball by using towels treated with chemicals during their game in Salem on June 14. In that match, played at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground, the Dragons defeated the Panthers by nine wickets. Batting first, the Panthers posted 150 for 8 in 20 overs. Ashwin went wicketless but conceded only 27 runs in his four overs. However, he made an impact with the bat, scoring 49 off 29 balls as an opener, helping the Dragons chase down the target in just 12.3 overs. In a letter to TNPL, Madurai franchise COO S Mahesh wrote: 'A serious case of ball tampering occurred during our recent match against Dindigul Dragons. Despite repeated warnings, the Dindigul team blatantly tampered with the ball, using towels that appeared to have been treated with chemicals.' Madurai coach Shijit Chandran added: 'The ball's condition deteriorated rapidly during our innings, affecting our batsmen's performance. You could hear the sound of every shot our batters played after the powerplay — as if they were hitting hard stone instead of a cricket ball. "We believe the Dindigul Dragons team used foreign substances to alter the ball's condition, including special towels with pre-applied roughening agents. This is unacceptable, against the spirit of the game, and amounts to cheating.' However, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) said it found no evidence of ball tampering during the game. R Ashwin announces retirement from Test cricket 'The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams,' TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan said in a statement. 'The Playing Control Team — including umpires and the match referee — maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature.' The towels were provided by the state cricket association to wipe the ball if it got wet. The drying was done in the presence of the on-field umpires. Therefore, the TNPL asked the Panthers to submit proof at the earliest to 'substantiate' their allegations.

R Ashwin, Dindigul Dragons learn their fate on ball-tampering allegations: 'Claims appear speculative and post-facto'

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and his franchise in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) franchise, Dindigul Dragons, on Tuesday learned their fate on the ball-tampering allegations aimed at them by the Siechem Madurai Panthers. The Dragons were cleared of the allegations following a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) probe. The controversy erupted after the Panthers claimed that the towels the Dragons used in the TNPL clash on June 14 at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground were "treated with chemicals" to tamper with the ball. After Dindigul Dragons claimed a nine-wicket win in the run chase, Panthers CEO Mahesh S alleged "blatant ball tampering," thus demanding an investigation into the matter. However, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan confirmed no wrongdoing after the investigation committee found no credible proof against the Dragons. In a statement released on the probe, Kannan said: "The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams. The Playing Control Team - including on-field umpires and the match referee - maintained full oversight of the ball throughout the match. No concerns were raised during play, and no verifiable evidence has been provided. The claims appear speculative and post-facto in nature." However, the Panthers were told to submit any credible evidence by 3 PM on 17 June to support their claim, but no such requests have been made yet. According to the TNCA, the towels used by the Dragons were utilised to dry the ball during wet outfield conditions due to the dew factor and were under the supervision of the on-field umpires. In the match against the Panthers, Ashwin did go wicketless for 27 runs in four overs, but made up for his batting performance, as he smashed a blazing 49 to wrap up the chase of 151 in just 12.3 overs. Dragons, the defending champions, have recorded two wins in three matches this season.
