56-year-old Dustin Rhodes wins AEW gold in his home state
The crowd in Globe Life Field, and the AEW announcers and wrestlers on our screen, were still processing Adam Cole's possible retirement announcement from moments before. But the show must go on, and a new TNT champion needed to be crowned after Cole vacated. Cole's originally scheduled opponent Kyle Fletcher was a part of the 4-way for the vacant belt, as was previous champ Daniel Garcia. Both Garcia and his mentor Matt 'Daddy Magic' Menard shared a moment with Cole during their entrance. Three-time TNT titleholder Sammy Guevara was also in the match, along with the man he holds the ROH Tag titles with, Dustin Rhodes. That duo was in their second match of the night, after winning an 8-man on the pre-show. Rhodes and Guevara, together known as Sons of Texas, worked together on occasion, and didn't work against each other, including during a bit of fun where all three babyfaces hit Dustin's Unnatural Kick/Shattered Dreams on the favorite Fletcher. But their alliance broke down after Sammy inadvertently hit a corner drop kick on his partner. Garcia tried to take advantage of that, setting off a sequence that would end when Guevara took out Fletcher with a cutter as Garcia locked his partner in a Dragontamer. But Dustin was able to reverse the hold and roll the younger man up for a win, taking his first AEW gold in his home state at 56-years-old. The Texans in attendance loved it, as did the ones who came into celebrate with Rhodes, his nephews Wayne & Wyatt Rhodes and his trios partners Ross & Marshall Von Erich. A call that will be debated online, but felt right given what it followed. Fletcher will be champ soon, but All In Texas was Dustin Rhodes time. Daniel Garcia Explains What Being TNT Champion Means To Him
Ahead of his TNT Title defense tonight against Adam Cole on AEW Collision, Daniel Garcia reflects on his run as champion so far. All Elite Wrestling's Daniel Garcia was a recent guest on In The Kliq. When asked what being TNT Champion means to him, Garcia said it means you're the face of the network and believes it's the original workhorse title of the company. 'I mean being TNT Champion is special because you're literally the face of the network,' Daniel Garcia said. 'You're the face of TNT that AEW Collision is on every single week. It's very important. You're really entrusted to be the face of a network. And to me, the TNT Championship is so important because that was the original workhorse title of AEW. 'That's Cody Rhodes' title. That's Brodie Lee's title. Christian Cage, Adam Copeland, Samoa, Joe, Darby Allin. Like, all these great names have held this title, and then someone like Jack Perry, I think he got it and kind of halted the momentum of the title a little bit. 'He kind of turned it into like what he thought the TNT Title should be. And I think what he thinks the TNT Title should be is completely different than what it actually should be. So I'm doing my best to restore the prestige and bring the title back to the relevancy that it once had.' When asked about tonight's title defense against Adam Cole, Garcia said that announcement came as a surprise to him. 'That match was a shock to me,' Daniel Garcia admitted. 'Because obviously, they announced it on TV, I don't see that. I'm in the ring. I get to the back, and Tony's like, 'Hey, you're defending your title against Adam Cole this weekend.' I wasn't ready for that. Come on. I was very surprised. 'But Adam Cole, me and him, have some built up tension over the past couple weeks, I would say over the past, you know, four or five weeks, I think we're on a great run of Collisions, maybe our best run ever. I think a lot of that has to do with the tension that me and Adam Cole have built up. 'And whenever he's in the ring with me, I see the way he looks at me, you know I'm saying? Those eyes can only mean one or two things. Either he's got a crush on ole DG or he wants a shot at the TNT Title. So if he wants a shot at the TNT title, that's what he's gonna get.'
