CM Stalin to inaugurate Vietnamese EV plant on July 31
CHENNAI: Vietnamese electric vehicle (EV) major VinFast is set to unveil its integrated EV manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi on July 31, with Chief Minister M K Stalin likely to preside over the inauguration. The plant will make the port city emerge as one of the state's major auto clusters besides Chennai, Hosur and Coimbatore. Terming the inauguration a moment of immense pride for the state, Industries Minister Dr T R B Rajaa told TNIE the project has gone from the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to inauguration in an astounding pace of just 15 months, reflecting Tamil Nadu government's focused, execution-driven approach under the leadership of Stalin. 'We have been clear in attracting credible, long-term global investors who bring in advanced technology, strong capital commitments and a clear vision for job creation and ecosystem development. VinFast fits that vision perfectly,' he said. He added the facility will be part of a new green industrial cluster and MSME ecosystem in Thoothukudi, bringing high-value jobs to local youth. 'It's a symbol of the next phase of south TN's industrial transformation,' the minister said.

TN courts investors at Osaka expo
CHENNAI: Industries Minister TRB Rajaa inaugurated the state's pavilion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka marking a renewed push to position the southern Indian state as a preferred destination for global investment. The Tamil Nadu showcase-part of the larger India Pavilion branded 'Bharat'will run till July 19, spotlighting the state's industrial strengths, policy ecosystem and cultural heritage. Rajaa said the visit marks a culmination of the state's sustained engagement with Japanese stakeholders over the past year. 'I am happy to announce that we have converted 100% of MoUs signed during our Japan visit in May 2023,' he said in a social media post, signalling strong follow-through on earlier investment commitments. The visit also aims to deepen trade and institutional ties with Japanese prefectures such as Ehime and Hiroshima, with which Tamil Nadu already has cooperation agreements. Meetings over the coming days are expected to explore new investment opportunities.

Named the Hyundai HTWO Innovation Centre, the ₹ 180 crore facility will come up at IIT Madras' Discovery Campus in Thaiyur and is scheduled to become operational by 2026. Driving innovation in green hydrogen The project was announced during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet in January 2024 and is positioned as a key catalyst for India's transition to clean energy. The centre aims to deepen research in hydrogen production, storage, and application, with a special focus on its role in sustainable mobility and power solutions. 'Tamil Nadu is proud to be at the forefront of automotive and clean-tech innovation. With institutions like IIT Madras and partners like Hyundai, we are setting the stage for India—and potentially Asia—to lead the R&D efforts in next-gen hydrogen technologies," he said. A platform for global collaboration The facility will span 65,000 sq ft and include state-of-the-art experimental and computational labs. These will enable the development of digital twins for hydrogen infrastructure, pilot-scale electrolyser and fuel cell systems, and test zones for industrial-scale containerised solutions. Hyundai Motor India MD Unsoo Kim stated that the centre will be an 'open innovation platform," bringing together international experts, Indian researchers, and industry partners to accelerate breakthroughs. ''HTWO'—which stands for both 'Hydrogen' and 'Humanity'—represents our vision to create sustainable and scalable solutions aligned with Hyundai's global carbon neutrality goals," Kim noted. By enabling localisation of the hydrogen value chain and fostering public–private partnerships, the centre seeks to establish Tamil Nadu as a national—and possibly regional—hub for clean-tech innovation. Tamil Nadu tops EIU ranking for business environment
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has emerged as the top-ranked Indian state for business environment, according to the latest report for the period 2025-2029 released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), which is part of the Economist Group, by securing a score of 7.4 and finding a place under the 'achievers' category. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, citing the report on Tuesday, said the accolade underscored Tamil Nadu's transformation into a national leader in economic competitiveness. 'This recognition reflects the state's unmatched progress — from record FDI inflows to thriving industries across sectors,' he said. Industries Minister TRB Rajaa termed the achievement as a validation of the Dravidian model of governance, which, he said, is a unique combination of social inclusivity and economic ambition. 'This is the Dravidian model in action where a business-friendly atmosphere, visionary leadership, effective policy and relentless execution come together,' Rajaa said.

Hyundai, IIT-M join up to indigenise hydrogen tech
Chennai: Hyundai Motor in partnership with IIT Madras and Tamil Nadu govt has decided to open a research and development hub for hydrogen infrastructure, including fabrication of electrolysers, fuel cells and others. The HTWO Innovation Centre aims to indigenously develop technologies with participation from IIT-M researchers and small scale industries. State industries minister T R B Rajaa unveiled the design of the centre on Tuesday. Hyundai Motors contributed Rs 100 crore for the initiative with partial funding through Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), as part of its CSR efforts for clean energy. Spread across a sprawling 65,000 sq ft area within the Thaiyur campus of IIT-M with financial support of the state government, it will feature advanced computational and experimental laboratories. It plans to develop digital twins of hydrogen infrastructure, along with customised test rigs and fabrication lines and pilot-level electrolysers and fuel cells. It will also host test zones for containerised pilot demonstrators for industrial-scale products.
