R10 000 fundraiser helps send Sunninghill teen to karate competition
'I feel very excited but also a little nervous about the competition. It's a big chance for me. I've been training hard with my karate and BJJ coaches, and I want to do my best. '
These words come from a hopeful karate athlete John 'Jono' Meso, who is ready to participate at the upcoming Karate Nationals in KZN.
Meso is a karate athlete from TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation, a Sunninghill-based non-profit dedicated to empowering youth and women through martial arts.
The foundation recently held a small, community-driven fundraiser that made a big impact, and it is all thanks to the support of Run/Walk for Life Sunninghill, QuanWessels Martial Arts Academy, and members of the local community, the efforts were fruitful.

'I'm really thankful for everyone who is helping me. I look forward to showing what I've learned, meeting other kids who love martial arts, and doing my best. I will give it everything I have and try to make everyone proud.'
TRIBE Martial Arts co-founder Norman 'Chef' Wessels, said Meso is exactly the type of student they had hoped for, and he is exactly the type of student their programme needs.
'He is also a great representation of the success of our programme and what we can do. It was difficult in the beginning to build trust, a plan and a vision that he could see and align with. Five years later he has matured in to outstanding young man with medals and accolades to his name.

'Through the lowest of lows and the highest of highs, it has been amazing to be a part of his journey.'
The foundation raised R10 000, which is going towards Meso's entry fees, transport, accommodation, food and gear for the national competition.
