A Martian rock and dinosaur skeleton just made auction history — Details inside

At a recent auction in New York, a huge rock from Mars was sold for a record $5.3 million. Weighing over 54 pounds, it's believed to be the biggest piece of Martian rock ever found on Earth– and now, the most expensive meteorite ever sold. But that wasn't the only big moment of the night. A rare dinosaur skeleton was also auctioned and grabbed even more attention, selling for a whopping $30 million. A Martian treasure lands on Earth As per media reports, the meteorite, called NWA 16788, was found in the Sahara Desert in Niger in late 2023 by a meteorite hunter. It is believed that it was thrown off Mars by a huge asteroid hit and travelled more than 140 million miles through space before landing on Earth, as mentioned in an Indian Express report. It was expected to sell for $2 to $4 million, but it went for more. The winning bid was $4.3 million, and after adding auction fees, the final price was $5.3 million. As quoted by the Indian Express, Cassandra Hatton, Vice Chairman for Science and Natural History at Sotheby's, highlighted the rarity of the find, noting, 'This Martian meteorite is the largest piece of Mars we have ever found by a long shot.' She added that it is more than double the size of the previous largest fragment. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The unique composition of the meteorite What makes this Martian rock even more special isn't just how big it is– it makes up nearly 7% of all Mars rocks ever found on Earth. As mentioned in the media report, Sotheby's said it's much bigger than any other known Martian piece and is a type of rock called 'olivine-microgabbroic shergottite,' which means it was formed from lava that cooled down on Mars. Its surface looks smooth and glassy, showing it got extremely hot while entering Earth's atmosphere. Experts confirmed the rock came from Mars by checking its chemical makeup and comparing it with data from NASA's Viking mission, which landed on Mars in 1976. The dinosaur skeleton that sparked a bidding frenzy While the meteorite got a lot of attention, it was a rare Ceratosaurus skeleton that really stood out, selling for an incredible $30.5 million. As mentioned in the Indian Express report is believed that it's the only young Ceratosaurus ever found, and just one of four skeletons of this dinosaur known to exist. It looks a bit like the famous T Rex but is smaller in size. According to the media reports, the bidding began at $6 million– already higher than what was expected– and quickly picked up speed. The price kept rising in jumps of $500,000 and later $1 million until it finally sold for $30.5 million, including auction fees. Sotheby's later confirmed that the buyer, who chose to remain anonymous, plans to loan the skeleton to a public institution. Thumb image: Canva (For representational purposes only)

AUBURN, Wash. (AP) — Spectators cheered as participants ran down the track cloaked in inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex costumes during the T-Rex World Championship Races at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Washington. The Sunday event started in 2017 as a pest control company's team-building activity. The actual dinosaur roamed the planet between 65 million and 67 million years ago. A study published four years ago in the journal Science estimated about 2.5 billion of the dinosaurs roamed Earth over the course of a couple million years. Glastonbury Across the BBC Yes, it's that time of year again, when thousands of music lovers from around the world descend on Worthy Farm in Somerset for a weekend of music and more. It's 55 years since Michael Eavis welcomed visitors to his estate for a pop, blues and folk festival, which was headlined by The Kinks and T Rex, the latter being a last-minute replacement for Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. Murderer Behind The Mask Prime Video, streaming now True crime isn't just the purview of Netflix, you know, and this Prime Video offering about Elaine O'Hara and Graham Dwyer hits particularly close to home. It highlights how An Garda Síochana meticulously pieced together the truth, turning an overlooked case into one of Ireland's most haunting murder trials. Back in September 2013, the remains of childcare worker O'Hara were discovered in the Dublin mountains. Initially believed to be a suicide, her case took a twisted tangent when fishermen stumbled upon crucial evidence leading to Dwyer, a respected architect who lived in Foxrock with his wife and kids. Beneath his carefully crafted facade lurked a secret life fuelled by a dark stabbing obsession, revealed through his disturbing text exchanges with O'Hara. Over the course of two 45-minute instalments, this Wag Entertainment-produced series purports to uncover how the investigation unfolded and the tragic story behind Elaine's murder. Battle rapper T-Rex suffers seizure mid-battle during live showdown onstage

A veteran US freestyle rapper has suffered a medical emergency while in the middle of a rap battle. T-Rex – real name Randy Sullivan – was freestyling against his opponent Geechi Gotti at the Ultimate Rap Battle's NOME 15 event at the Gramercy Theatre in New York when he collapsed and appeared to have a seizure live on stage. In a clip going viral on social media, the Harlem battle rap legend – who was headlining the event on Sunday – was midway through the first round when he abruptly fell to the floor and began to convulse. His collapse caused panic among his crew, who tried to pull the rapper back up before urging each other to 'turn him on his side'. Paramedics soon arrived to transport him to a nearby hospital, with rap media outlet Let's Talk Battle Rap providing an update from the event. 'Rex was conscious before the Paramedics left to the hospital,' they tweeted. According to TMZ, New York is currently experiencing a heatwave and many suspect T-Rex could have suffered from heat stroke after he was reportedly seen begging for a bottle of water before his battle began. His opponent Geechi Gotti – real name Marcus Fantroy – spoke out about the incident at the venue, expressing concerns for the popular star. 'I'm about to head to the hospital to check on my boy,' Gotti said. 'I came in here with his folks and family. So we gon' go up there and check on Rex right now... Prayers to bro because that s**t is way more important than any battle.' In the wake of the shocking incident, T-Rex took to social media to confirm he's doing better after friend and battle rap nurse Juiceboxxx, who was by his side, tweeted, 'Right place. Right time. I'm glad you're okay.' 'Thank god for JuJu I appreciate you so much,' T-Rex replied. 'Also my cuzin D-Boy love you n***a.' Relieved fans have also showed the battle legend some love on social media. 'Rest up rex and i am so happy [Juiceboxxx] was there to help. Praying for you,' one tweeted, while another wrote, 'Glad to hear your Ok, brother, thanks to all who help in that situation.' 'You scared the sh*t out of us. Glad you good!' another commented, with one tweeting, 'Prayers to you Rex you bouta come back the best version of you.' T-Rex has been a prolific battle rapper since the late 90s. In his career, he has faced off with MCs including his cousin Murda Mook, Loaded Lux, Math Hoffa, Charlie Clips, and Hitman Holla.
