Jesy Nelson warns of key symptoms of rare pregnancy complications in first interview after twins' birth
Jesy Nelson has detailed the symptoms of the rare pregnancy complications she experienced before giving birth to her twins. The former Little Mix star and her partner Zion Foster welcomed Ocean Jade Nelson-Foster and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster in May at 31 weeks and five days. She underwent a procedure for pre-twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, or TTTS, a condition that results in an unbalanced blood flow from one twin to another. The rare condition is thought to impact between 10 and 15 per cent of identical twins who share a placenta, and can be fatal without intervention.

Jesy Nelson says she could not ‘enjoy' her pregnancy due to health complications
Former Little Mix star Jesy Nelson has said she could not 'enjoy' her pregnancy due to a string of health complications. The 34-year-old singer gave birth birth to twins Ocean Jade and Story Monroe in May, after documenting pregnancy complications on her social media including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Advertisement According to the NHS, TTTS affects 10% to 15% of identical twins who share a placenta and 'can have serious consequences'. Speaking on ITV's This Morning, Nelson said: 'I couldn't believe the percentages and what could potentially happen to them. 'I almost felt like, from that point, I couldn't really enjoy my pregnancy because I was just constantly worried that something was going to happen. 'I actually had a threatened miscarriage quite early on as well and from then I was like, I don't even want to announce it (the pregnancy). Advertisement 'When I think back to it now it makes me feel so sad because its like, when you're pregnant, that should be like the happiest time of your life.' TTTS is caused by abnormal connecting blood vessels in the placenta which leads to an imbalanced blood flow from one twin to the other, leaving one with a greater blood volume than the other. One treatment involves using a laser to burn away the blood vessels in the placenta that are causing the unequal flow. Nelson said she was scanned weekly and monitored closely, but within a matter of days her symptoms had changed drastically and she had to undergo the emergency procedure. Advertisement She said: 'There were symptoms to look out for, it was like, if your belly gets really tight, like a drum, if you're struggling with your breathing. 'And two days after my scan, we'd gone to the park, and I couldn't even walk because I was just so out of breath. But it's so hard when you're pregnant with twins as well, because what is normal and what's not? 'I was just like, well, I've got twins, of course I'm going to be out of breath and of course my belly is going to be really tough, I am growing two humans. 'And then it was thanks to Zion, actually, that I said to him, 'Can you feel my belly? Because I've actually got so used to feeling like this, I don't know what's normal any more'.' Advertisement Jesy Nelson (Matt Crossick/PA) The twins' father, musician Zion Foster, said: 'It felt like overnight we literally went from pre-stage to like, you have to have the procedure now. And that procedure is not even guaranteed to work. And I think that was another thing that was terrifying.' After spending more than 10 weeks in hospital after the procedure, Nelson gave birth to the twins 31 weeks and five days early on May 15. The singer is best known as a former member of pop group Little Mix, rising to fame after winning The X Factor in 2011. The group, which included Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, were behind chart-topping singles including Cannonball, Shout Out To My Ex and Wings. Advertisement Nelson left the band in December 2020 and has since released two songs as a solo artist – Boyz, which featured US rapper Nicki Minaj, in 2021 and the Bad Thing in 2023. She will feature in a new Prime Video docuseries, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, which will follow her through her pregnancy and take a closer look at her decision to leave the girl group.

She lived in hospital for weeks after being diagnosed twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), a rare but serious condition in which blood flows unevenly between identical twins sharing a placenta. Jesy also revealed she had a "threatened miscarriage" early on in the pregnancy. In her first TV interview since giving birth, the singer declared: "Thank you for having us. We made it!" Crading tiny Ocean Jade, she joked: "Ocean is receding a little bit bless her. So that's how we can tell (them apart". Jesy revealed daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe were born premature at 31 weeks and five days, but her nightmare began very early on in her pregnancy. She said: "I mean when we first found out we were having twins which was just crazy we were excstatic over the moon. Zion looked like he'd seen a ghost. "Had the scan and immediately the guy told us I hav e to refer you to a twin specialist. "The next day, the doctor sat us down and told us all the complications. I felt like, I couldn't believe ther percentages and what could potentially happen. From that point I couldn't enjoy my pregnancy. "They told us we could only take it two weeks at a time, I didn't even want to announce it. Jesy Nelson breaks down in tears as she reveals she needs emergency procedure to give twins 'best chance of survival' "When I look back now it makes me so sad, it's supposed to be the happiest time. Jesy and Zion were joined by their consultant, Dr Ruwan Wimalasundera, who explained the dangers posed to monochorionic twins in the womb. He said there is a very high chance of miscarriage due to their blood vessels being joined together in their jont placenta. Jesy had to have a high risk procedure, called Fetoscopic laser, to separate the blood vessels. Jesy said: "Every time we were going for scans it was getting a little bit worst and a little bit worst. "I still didn't think we'd have a procedure. "I went to see him (the doctor) on the Tuesday and had it on the Thursday. "There were symptoms to look out for, if your belly feels like a drum, if you are out of breath." Jesy and her babies stayed in hospital for ten weeks after they were born. She added: "I felt safe to be there, I actually didn't want to go home." Jesy, beaming in a colourful silk co-ord, thanked Dr Ruwan and said the couple were now settling into a new normal at home with daughters Ocean Jade and Story Monroe. The twins, dressed in pink onesies and hats, quickly stole the show - with Alison cooing over the tots. Alison and Dermot presented Jesy with an "I love This Morning" baby grow.
