Student accommodation approved for vibrant Tipperary university town
Planning permission was sought to turn a former retail premises in Thurles into residential accommodation, to house students of the town's colleges, TUS Thurles and MIC Thurles.
The plans will see three student accommodation bedrooms delivered at a former alterations shop on the corner of Croke Street and Friar Street in the town.
The plans, which have been approved by Tipperary County Council would see a three bedroom block, over three floors with a toilet and kitchen/dining/living room at ground floor, a bathroom, ensuite bedroom and TV room at first floor and two bedrooms and bathroom on the second floor.
The application was granted subject to four conditions, including that the premises be limited to use as student accommodation, that all demolition works that are carried out on the site are done in a way to minimise noise, dust and disruption, and that the developer pay Tipperary County Council €346 in respect of infrastructure and facilities provided by the council.
The two colleges in Thurles means that a large student population lives in the town, with MIC Thurles offering courses such as religion and Irish teaching, and home economics and business education teaching, while the TUS campus in the town allows students a chance to study in areas including applied sports science, agricultural science and software development with games programming.
