Award-winning prof Dr Suman Chakraborty takes over as IIT-KGP Director
Professor Suman Chakraborty, a nationally awarded scientist and eminent academic, officially took over as the Director of IIT Kharagpur on Monday. An internationally recognised expert in mechanical engineering, Prof Chakraborty has been a faculty member at the institute since 2002. Over the years, he has received several prestigious honours — both national and international — for his contributions in fluid mechanics, biomedical engineering, and their applications in technology for social impact. A graduate in Mechanical Engineering from Jadavpur University (1996), Prof Chakraborty pursued his Master's at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, where he was the faculty topper and earned a gold medal along with a Senate Commendation. He went on to complete his PhD from IISc in 2002, with his research on solid-liquid phase transitions in thermal processing earning him the institute's Best Thesis Award and the 'Best International CFD Thesis Award' in computational fluid dynamics. He began his teaching career at Jadavpur University before joining IIT-Kharagpur as an Assistant Professor. He became a Senior Professor in 2008. Prof Chakraborty has held several key administrative roles at the institute. He was Dean of Research and Development and of Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (2019–2022), and Associate Dean prior to that (2017–2019). He also served as Head of the School of Medical Science and Technology (2015–2019). Among his key scientific leadership roles, he was Principal Investigator for the ICMR Centre of Excellence on Healthcare, and led the CRTDI (Common Research and Technology Development Hub) on Affordable Health, funded by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India. In recognition of his research in micro- and nanoscale fluid flows, which have driven affordable diagnostics and improved access to healthcare in underserved communities, Prof Chakraborty was recently named recipient of the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by UNESCO. He currently holds the Institute Chair Professorship in Mechanical Engineering and is a Sir J.C. Bose National Fellow, a distinction conferred by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.

Kolkata: Suman Chakraborty, institute chair professor in mechanical engineering at IIT-Kharagpur, was appointed the institute's full-time director on Thursday. A winner of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Chakraborty is currently a J C Bose National fellow. He was awarded the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by Unesco for his work in micro- and nanoscale flows, enabling innovations in diagnostic technologies and improving rural livelihood and healthcare access. Chakraborty confirmed he had received the appointment letter for the IIT-Kgp director's post. "The institute needs a cultural transformation. A healthy environment with positive thinking and free flow of ideas should prevail and the environment of intimidation should be eliminated. Young students lost their lives. Despite the institute's efforts, we have not been able to address the matter. If we can collectively work, things will change for the better," he said. "My biggest happiness will be to work for IIT-Kgp's academic progress." After V K Tewari's retirement in Dec 2024, the campus was being run by IIT-Varanasi director Amit Patra. Chakraborty graduated from JU in mechanical engineering in 1996 and did his ME at IISc. He joined JU as a lecturer. He received his PhD from IISc in 2002. Professor Suman Chakravorty has been appointed the director of IIT Kharagpur for a period of five years. He will take over from the current acting director, Prof Amit Patra, also the director of IIT-Bhu, who assumed additional charge at the end of last year, following the retirement of Prof VK Tewari, the earlier director. Prof. Chakraborty, the Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, has recently been honoured with the 2026 TWAS Award in Engineering and Computer Sciences by UNESCO and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), a testimony to his contributions to micro and nanoscale flows, which have led to transformative innovations in diagnostic technologies, improving rural healthcare access and enhancing livelihoods for marginalised communities. During his nearly 23-year-old long stint in IIT Kharagpur, Prof Chakraborty has been the recipient of several awards including the National Award for Teachers (2023), the Infosys Prize in the Category of Engineering and Computer Science, Infosys Science Foundation (2022) and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, considered the highest scientific award in India. He is widely considered to be one of the leading researchers in the country, and an innovator known for his contribution to revolutionising healthcare. Chakraborty completed his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Jadavpur University and the Masters of Engineering programme from IISc Bangalore. He joined Jadavpur University as a lecturer and then got his PhD from IISC in 2002. He joined IIT Kharagpur in August 2002 as an assistant professor in the department of mechanical engineering Live Events Since then, he has held several positions at IIT Kharagpur including Head, School of Medical Science & Technology; Associate Dean, Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy, and Dean, Research and Development/ Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy.
