Akira: Taika Waititi's Live-Action Movie Gets Disappointing Update

Taika Waititi's live-action movie has received a disappointing update courtesy of a new report from THR. According to a new report from THR, the Akira live-action movie at Warner Bros. Discovery is officially not happening. The movie studio has reportedly let go of the movie rights, reverting them back to Kodansha, the manga publisher that originally released Katsuhiro Otomo's story in 1982. THR's report mentions that producers and other talent have already begun 'lining up' to try and attach themselves to the property for future pitches. As for Waititi's long-in-development movie, this means the project is likely fully over with. Akira's movie development has been a long and extremely complicated one. Warner Bros. picked up the rights to the incredibly popular manga in 2002, and originally had Stephen Norrington (Blade) attached as a director. That began two decades of what THR describes as development hell, with writers and directors like Garry Whitta, Mark Fergus, Hawk Otsby, Steve Kloves, and more all attached at one point or another. In 2017, Waititi was announced to be writing and directing a movie based on the manga. This project even received a 2021 release date and was in the process of casting, according to THR. However, Waititi became too busy with other projects, and never recommitted to the project. Originally released in 1982, Akira tells the story of a post-apocalyptic and futuristic 'Neo-Tokyo,' and centers on Shotaro Kaneda, a gang leader, the militant revolutionary Kei, and more. The manga received an animated film in 1988, which is often heralded as one of the greatest films ever made and something that helped make anime as a whole a pop culture staple, although it does deviate heavily from the source material. Mel Brooks Producing VERY YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Series Pilot for FX with Taika Waititi Directing — GeekTyrant

It looks like Mel Brooks' monster is getting a new lease on life and this time it will be on the small screen. FX is reportedly close to ordering a pilot for Very Young Frankenstein , a new comedy series inspired by Brooks' 1974 cult classic Young Frankenstein . Brooks himself has given it his blessing and will serve as executive producer, alongside a creative dream team from FX's What We Do in the Shadows . Stefani Robinson is writing and showrunning the series, with Taika Waititi set to direct the pilot. Garrett Basch, Kevin Salter (Brooks' longtime producing partner), and original Young Frankenstein producer Michael Gruskoff are also on board. 20th Television will produce the series. Details are being kept under wraps, but fans of Shadows might remember when Colin Robinson was turned into a baby and had to grow up again. So, there's a chance this new take could include some wild genre-bending antics in that same spirit. No casting news yet, but the tone and team suggest we're in for something clever and twisted. Young Frankenstein parodies the classic Frankenstein mythos with Gene Wilder playing Frederick Frankenstein (that's 'Fronkensteen'), a descendant of Victor Frankenstein who inherits his infamous grandfather's Transylvania estate. With the help of the bug-eyed Igor (Marty Feldman), Frederick sets out to clear the family name… by building his own monster. Naturally, things go hilariously off the rails. Shot in glorious black and white, the original also featured Peter Boyle as the monster, Cloris Leachman as the haunting Frau Blücher, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, and Brooks himself in multiple roles. The film remains one of Brooks' most iconic works, blending horror homage with comedic precision. Very Young Frankenstein is just the latest of Brooks' classics to be reimagined for a modern audience. It will be interesting to see how this turns.

The Moon Is Upside Down: This poignantly awkward dramedy could feature cinema's clumsiest sex scene

The Moon is Upside Down      Director : Loren Taylor Cert : None Genre : Comedy Starring : Starring Victoria Haralabidou, Elizabeth Hawthorne, Loren Taylor, Robbie Magasiva, Robyn Malcolm, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement Running Time : 1 hr 40 mins Busy medic Briar (Loren Taylor, also behind the camera) is late picking up her long-distance Skype boyfriend, Tim (Robbie Magasiva), with his 'Happy Mother's Day' balloon, the only heart-shaped option at the airport. They pull over by the side of the lonely road and kick out luggage for a backseat fumble that begins with butt cramp and ends in premature ejaculation and an unexpected period. Move over, American Pie. With The Moon Is Upside Down, Taylor makes a striking directorial debut, featuring a strong contender for cinema's clumsiest sex scene. Taylor, best known for cowriting and starring in Eagle vs Shark with Taika Waititi, her former partner, deservedly won the best-first-feature award at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival for this quietly moving and darkly funny triptych of stories. READ MORE Where Eagle vs Shark mined the comic potential of socially awkward love amid fast-food counters and video arcades, The Moon Is Upside Down finds emotional gravitas on the dustier backroads and dead-end motels of far-flung Wellington. The unabashedly feminine and poignantly awkward dramedy intertwines the lives of three women – a hopeful Russian immigrant, a weary anaesthetist and a jaded housewife – each grappling with their own crisis. Natalia (Victoria Haralabidou) arrives in New Zealand expecting a fresh start and a chance to run a cafe, only to find her new life with Mac (a hilariously uncomfortable Jemaine Clement) is surrounded by doomed cows. Briar half-arsedly navigates her 'erotic' virtual relationship between hospital shifts. And Faith (Elizabeth Hawthorne), a woman of privilege and routine, is jolted into action when she discovers a dead tenant in one of her husband's rental properties. The characters talk more than the denizens of Aki Kaurismäki's similarly deadpan milieu, but the tone is of a piece: 'Selling a property with a dead person in it,' Faith says, 'it's like buying a jacket with an arm in it. It has nothing to do with me. Did I tell you the canary starved to death?' Taylor's fearless and tart script is jollied along by mordant humour, winning performances and bracing realism. It's a dark comedy with the same offbeat sensibility as the New Zealand favourites Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople , and it points to a bright future for the writer-director. On limited cinema release from Friday, June 27th

Rita Ora reveals she proposed to husband Taika Waititi and even got down on one knee during romantic Palm Springs getaway

Rita Ora has revealed she proposed to her husband, Taika Waititi, during a romantic trip to Palm Springs - turning tradition on its head by getting down on one knee herself. The singer, 34, who married the 49-year-old filmmaker in 2022, shared the story on Davina McCall's Begin Again podcast, explaining how she broke convention and took charge of the proposal. She said: 'I just did the whole thing. We were in a hotel room in Palm Springs, like a really nice, fancy one filled up with balloons and cake, which is my favourite thing in the world. 'I got the bands made, I didn't want anything too flashy. He's like "What the hell is it? Valentine's Day?" I was like "Oh no, if you're gonna say no, I'm gonna have to take my clothes off. She concluded: 'Anyway, I got down on one knee, and Taika absolutely loved it.' Rita and Taika married in a private ceremony on August 4, 2022, in Los Angeles. The couple, who had been friends for years before becoming romantically involved in 2021, planned the wedding in just two weeks to ensure Taika's daughters could attend. The intimate event was attended by only eight people, including Rita's sister, Elena, who walked her down the aisle, and Taika's daughters, Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu and Matewa Kiritapu. Earlier this year, Rita shared a rare insight into her marriage to Taika while flaunting her jaw-dropping figure in a stunning shoot for Hunger magazine. Crediting their strong friendship as the key component to their romantic relationship, she told the publication: 'Taika and I are basically just best friends and we wanted to just live in that element for ever, I guess.' Elsewhere in the interview, Rita spoke about her latest album You & I and how her marriage to Taika, which she said was a 'big step', helped inspire it. She said: 'I felt like it was really necessary to be an open book… I wanted to introduce people to where I'm at in my life now — like a diary'. 'I think music is all about being as honest as you can be… All you can do is be yourself and hope that there's somebody out there who can connect or relate…' Before Taika, Rita romanced a string of big names, starting back in her pre-fame years. Before either of them shot to superstardom Rita dated Bruno Mars at the age of 18, later saying: 'It was love at first sight.' 'We met in 2009. I was 18 and starting out at Roc Nation. Bruno was unknown back then too. He was a struggling songwriter hired to write songs for me. 'I thought: 'Wow, that's just the world's greatest guy!'' After Bruno, the singer dated reality star Rob Kardashian for two months from October 2012 before ending their brief romance due to her 'hectic work schedule' and their incompatible lifestyles. She then had high-profile relationships with the likes of DJ Calvin Harris, musician Andrew Watt and designer Tommy Hilfiger's son Ricky. Rita has also enjoyed flings with rapper A$AP Rocky, actor Andrew Garfield and rocker Travis Barker.

Young Frankenstein Series Eyed at FX From Mel Brooks and What We Do in the Shadows EPs

A comedy classic is being reanimated on FX. A series based on the 1974 Mel Brooks film Young Frankenstein is nearing a pilot order at the network, our sister site Deadline reports. The series, titled Very Young Frankenstein, will count Brooks as an executive producer, along with What We Do in the Shadows veterans Taika Waititi, Garrett Basch and Stefani Robinson, with Robinson set to serve as writer and showrunner. American Love Story Offers a First Look at Its JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette - Plus, Find Out When It Premieres American Horror Story Season 13: Ryan Murphy Says He and Sarah Paulson Are 'Cooking Up Something Cool' Plot details are scarce at this point, other than the fact that the series is 'inspired' by the original Young Frankenstein, which starred Gene Wilder as the title character, the grandson of the mad scientist from the Mary Shelley novel. Peter Boyle played the monster that Frankenstein assembled from dead body parts and brought back to life, with Marty Feldman as Frankenstein's servant Igor. (That's pronounced 'Eye-gor,' for the record.) The supporting cast also included Teri Garr as Inga, Cloris Leachman as severe housemaid Fraü Blucher and, in an uncredited cameo, Gene Hackman as a blind hermit. Young Frankenstein went on to become a beloved classic, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The What We Do in the Shadows team would seem to be the perfect ones to adapt it for TV, too: Shadows, which followed a house full of vampires living together in Staten Island, ran for six seasons on FX and piled up more than two dozen Emmy nominations, including three nods for best comedy series.
