Animesh Kujur hits a purple patch, rises as India's foremost athletics hope

New Delhi, July 9 (UNI) With several national sprinting records to his name and a slew of medals at international tournaments, Animesh Kujur has emerged as India's foremost athlete. The 22-year-old recently set a new national record in 100 meters when he clocked 10.18 seconds in the 'Dromia International Sprint & Relays' meeting in Greece. It was a historic achievement as he became the first Indian to run 100 meters under 10.20 seconds. The Chhattisgarh lad has emerged as a prominent figure in Indian sprinting as he has several national records to his name. Apart from the men's 100-meter record, he also holds the national records in 200 meters, and the 4 × 100 m relay. Initially a football enthusiast, Animesh started pursuing athletics after becoming inspired by the legendary Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. He subsequently joined the Odisha-Reliance Foundation Athletics High-Performance Centre (HPC), where he was coached by Martin Owens. Kujur seems to have hit a purple patch lately as in May he broke the 200m national record at the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea. He clocked a timing of 20.32 seconds to win the bronze medal in the event. To add to this, he was also a part of the 4x100m relay team that etched a new national record of 38.69 seconds earlier this year. Kujur was also part of the Indian men's 4x100m relay team that won the gold medal at the Taiwan Athletics Open in June 2025. Now Kujur has set his sight on breaking the 20-second barrier in the 200 meters and consistently competing at the world stage. UNI RKM PRS

Rohit Yadav Targets 80m+ Throw At Neeraj Chopra Classic, Wants To Remain Fit

Last Updated: Rohit Yadav aims to match his season's best throw of 83.40m at the Neeraj Chopra Classic. He recently won gold at the Taiwan Athletics Open with a throw of 74.42m. Indian javelin thrower Rohit Yadav is gearing up for the Neeraj Chopra Classic with a focus on maintaining his fitness and aiming to match the season's best throw of 83.40 metres. Last month, Rohit battled tough weather conditions to clinch the gold medal at the Taiwan Athletics Open with a throw of 74.42m. As he prepares for the NC Classic, the two-time national champion hopes to reach his season's best mark. 'If there's an 80m mark, I believe I can reach it. The first thing is, you need to be fit to compete. Secondly, I don't want to aggravate my injury. I'm confident I can produce a personal best throw. My goal is to throw close to my season's best of 83.40 metres," said Rohit ahead of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a world athletics gold-level event. 'In Taipei, I recorded a throw of 74.40 metres. I was dealing with an injury earlier, so I was being cautious to avoid aggravating it. I spoke to the physio, and he assured me there was no serious issue — just some tightness. There was a bit of load, so I competed with caution. I had set a target of 70 to 80 metres in Taiwan, so 74.40 was a good result. It was raining there, but overall, it went fine," he added. Discussing the home advantage at the World Athletics gold-level meet, Rohit said, 'I've competed on this ground many times before, so that definitely gives us a bit of an advantage. When the venue changes, things can feel different, but here everything is familiar — the ground is well-maintained, the facilities are good, and there's no issue with food and other arrangements. That's the home advantage — the comfort and familiarity, and of course, the crowd support." Rohit further mentioned that while many athletes thrive on crowd energy, he finds his rhythm in focus and silence. 'But to be honest, I'm someone who prefers silence. I know most athletes feed off the crowd's energy, but personally, I like it quiet. If it's the kind of crowd that claps in rhythm, that's fine. But when people start shouting randomly, it can feel distracting, like things are out of control. It's not that I have a problem with the cheering — I just prefer to stay focused on my throw, regardless of the noise," he said. Expressing his excitement about the first international javelin throw competition to be held in India, Rohit said, 'This is happening for the first time, and I'm very happy about it — not just me, but the entire country. All of us javelin throwers are excited because world-class athletes are coming to compete here. Neeraj (Chopra) is also competing, and I last shared the field with him in 2022. Now, I'll get the opportunity to compete alongside him again, as well as with top international athletes," he concluded. The Neeraj Chopra Classic, co-organised by two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj himself and JSW Sports, and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India, is scheduled to take place on Saturday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. Javelin thrower, Taiwan Athletics Open gold medallist Rohit Yadav: Neeraj bhai told me, focus on dreams not results

Javelin thrower Rohit Yadav's impressive heave of 74.42m notched up India's 16-medal finish at Taiwan Athletics Open on Sunday. Despite the victory, the two-time national champ is still hungry for more. 'Desh ke liye gold laya hoon, bahut khush hoon,' says the UP native adding, 'Lekin aur behtar kar sakta tha. Main 80m mark todna chahte tha, par iss baar nahin toh agli baar zaroor aur achha karunga. If you feel you have fallen short of your goal, then you must learn where you lacked and come back even stronger.' Rohit adds that an athlete's success isn't just measured by a medal tally but also by the legacy they leave. That's exactly why he looks up to Olympian Neeraj Chopra. 'I first met Neeraj bhai in 2019 and every interaction with him since has been a motivator for me to get better,' he shares. 'His words to me — 'Focus on your dreams, not the results' — stayed with me. Unki consistency mujhe inspire karti hai and main bhi wahi consistency ke saath aage badhna chahta hoon,' he continues. A post shared by Rohit Yadav Javelin (@rohit________yadav) The javelin champ also reveals that his father Sabhajeet Yadav has been a source of inspiration. 'From childhood till now, I have been very close to my father. Woh sports ke liye passionate hain, aur unko hi dekhkar maine khelna shuru kara — talking with him helps me focus better. Before leaving for the competition, I discussed my mindset with him, and that helped me get in the right headspace,' he adds.
